Let's assume that Tanner is really playing well by end of this season and Taysom recovers well and has full mobility and wants to play QB.

Who should the coaches play at QB in 2016?

I guess I could ask who would you play. but maybe there would be a difference?

What, no "both" option? ;)

I just reconsidered. If TM wins the national championship, I would keep him.

I voted Tanner. If he has the full grasp of the offense and is playing well, I don't think you can bench him for a year and expect him to wait. Of course, that assumes he is healthy and is looking like a John Beck, Max Hall, or even better.

You could put all your eggs in the Taysom Hill basket, but then he could be injured the first game next season, which means you deprived Mangum of meaningful snaps in the offseason for no reason. Of course, that is always the case when the starter goes down, but at this point it seems obvious that a running QB like Taysom is simply more likely to have a season ending injury than a drop back QB like Tanner.

I love Taysom, but the only reason I think coaches should or would play him next year would be if Tanner simply doesn't pan out--which would be a different set of facts than the hypothetical gave of Tanner playing well.

This whole situation sucks. I was so excited about Taysom all offseason and completely emotionally invested in his Heisman campaign season. My brother and I joked about going to the Nebraska game, because it might be the only game we'd get to see Taysom play. How crappy is it that we were right. Don't get me wrong, Mangum was awesome and I think he has an awesome future with BYU ahead of him. I'm just still a bit sour about Taysom going down.

I just don't see Taysom trying to come back and making Mangum sit. I think he hangs it up. As long as Mangum is halfway decent, I don't see him not starting next year.

Taysom Hill is probably the most talented QB to ever play at BYU. He would start over any current or previous QB on a team that I put together.

If Mangum does well, no way you retool the offense for one year and sit him to bring back Tayters. Sucky situation, but that's the reality of it. It's not a plug-and-play scenario between the two. Look what OSU just did in a similar situation. The older guy moves on.

Seeing Braxton Miller go off on Va-Tech is why I thought of Taysom coming back as a running back or something like that. Imagine using Hill for a halfback pass option. It's not likely to happen, but a backfield consisting of Mangum, Hill and Williams would be deadly.

No brainer, Taysom gets the ball back. McMahon backed up Wilson(?) I think one year and played well with him injured but the next year they started Wilson again and McMahon was not happy about it. Taysom has earned the right to play. Mangum would need to wait his turn. Having said that, I think the likelihood of Hill coming back next year is as close to 0 as you can get it. Hill almost decided against coming back after last years injury. He is done. Sad but he is done.

My earlier comment aside, if Taysom wants to come back next year, there is no one else I'd like to see leading the team. Even if Mangum has a good/great year. Taysom at qb is truly something special.

IF Tanner Mangum plays well this year and then IF Taysom Hill decides to come back for next year, I've got a feeling the quarterback controversy between Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps is going to be small potatoes compared to what will happen at BYU.

In 2010-2011, it was two poor to mediocre quarterbacks fighting over the starting job. 2016 would be two highly talented and successful quarterbacks.

IMO, the controversy would be from the fans perspective. I think that Taysom and Mangum are both team players and would be team players for whomever won the job.

I just can't believe that Tanner is this conniving! Not only did he orchestrate Jamaal Williams withdrawing from school so that he would have a very talented senior running back to help him next year. But he also clearly worked with the Nebraska field crew to manipulate the field to injure's Taysom's foot in such a catastrophic manner as well.

Obviously he was concerned about the team next year, so he got Williams to postpone his career. But after an uber-successful fall camp he realized he was ready now, so he set out to remove Taysom from the equation much earlier than anyone anticipated.

;) ;) ;)
