I was wondering if you guys have heard of him running? He is the CEO of Overstock. We grew up together in Los Angeles though I was a few years older and ready didn't know him very well. Does he have a shot?

For me, a lot of it depends on his 2nd Amendment position. Herbert has been passable on a lot of things, but Utah deserves Constitutional Carry and he has been more than hesitant to allow Utahns the rights guaranteed them in the Constitution on that front.

The farce with the Prison Relocation has soured me on Herbet, however he's still my #1 choice. Johnson has a chance, but it's still to early to know where he really stands on a lot of issues.

What's his position on the public lands issue?

I don't know. I live in Oregon so I don't follow Utah politics. I asked on his Facebook page.

Hi Scott, thank you for your question. The federal government owns two-thirds of the land in our state. By percentage only Nevada owns less of its land. Utah forests, watershed, wildlife habitat and recreation areas are at extreme risk of due to the mismanagement by the federal government. Under state control and management, these lands could be better preserved, Utahns could have better access, and provide a higher economic return through local stewardship. I will lead the fight for the transfer of federal lands to Western states, it is essential if we are to become a self-reliant state. We live here. We don’t need D.C.to control our lands.

Over 60% of Idaho is owned by the federal government. I maintain that our map needs to be redrawn to look like swiss cheese. I wish Idaho's governor would join in this fight. We have billions in timber and I've heard gas reserves on the so called public lands that he and others in the state are not fighting for. The states forests here are also run much better than the mismanaged federal forests. Public lands seems a misnomer as they often don't want the public even setting foot on their lands. Their forests are burnt more than the state's. They say they are protecting things while losing timber and poor animals in the terrible blazes.

I hope this guy will win this fight.

Maybe we need to send the Feds a bill for fire fighting this year. All of Oregon is covered with smoke.

But - you're not smart enough to know what to do, or how to manage those lands. You need to be told what kind of lightbulb to use, what kind of toilet to use, what kind of shower-head to use, what kind and how much food to feed your children at school. What's the deal? Are you a trouble maker? I hope so.

As I understand it the lands were supposed to be returned decades ago to the states. If the Donald wins, the govs in the west should take the cause to him. I'm apprehensive about him but if he is showing his true agenda then I think he would welcome getting rid of federal burdens. And since all our national parks are reportedly under the care of the UN, I welcome it even more.

Herbert's approval rating and polling among voters in Utah is in the 60-70% rate, JJ is < 20%. There are a much higher number of delegates who support JJ over Herbert but they are not in the same proportion as the general public. Governor Herbert will easily win reelection.

I think it will be close. Herbert is burning through cash at a rate that shows more concern than the polling would justify, but all of the polling that has been released publicly since the convention is polling Herbert has paid for and they refuse to release their protocols, sampling methods, or questions--they just have the pollster (Dan Jones) do a one paragraph release saying "we polled some people, and Herbert's knocking them dead!" Meanwhile Herbert pleads and begs for more money so he can fight off the guy he's decimating?

It was the same story before the convention--Herbert's Dan Jones poll said he would win and avoid a primary, but Herbert was out there putting on concerts at Thanksgiving Point, renting out the RSL Stadium, and just spending oodles of money....not the behavior you'd associate with a guy who believes those poll numbers. And then he was 10+ pts behind at the convention.

I think it is much close than these campaign polls would have you believe, and I think Johnson is running a very smart campaign with how he is nicking and poking at Herbert and letting Herbert hurt himself (i.e. releasing the damning recording of Herbert telling lobbyists he doesn't agree with their clients' positions, but if they pay over $1000 to his campaign, he can guarantee results they will be happy with, and letting Herbert twist in the wind to try and explain it away). Meanwhile he's keeping his powder dry for a late push in mass marketing so he hits maximum exposure on primary day.

I don't know that most GOPers prefer Johnson, but he just needs to get Herbert voters demotivated and rile up enough others to get to 50.00001% of that small subset of Utah GOPer's who actually vote on primary day, and I think he's got a very smart plan to get there. I hope he does.
