B10 Acknowledges BYU P5 Team

B10 commissioner just announced that teams in league playing BYU will have the game count as a non-conference P5 game. This recognition now includes SEC, ACC and B10. This allows some interesting scheduling opportunities. Upcoming games vs NE, MI, MSU tend to support P5 equivalent status.

Great. Another conference sees the light.

I would like BYU to have more than honorary respect but hopefully it leads the school to be part of the Big 5 club. However, being able to play these teams will clearly provide more opportunities to demonstrate whether BYU can play with the best. Should help recruiting if P5 teams are on the schedule - very legit competition. Nice opportunities for recruits to play in a variety of venues and fans outside of Utah to see their team.

Also interesting in the morning announcements was that the B1G will no longer play FCS schools starting in 2016. I wonder if the other conferences/independents will follow suit.

Isn't it interesting the 2 conferences that fans are hoping BYU joins (PAC and B12) have not announced that they view BYU as a P5 school?



I would see great benefit to the PAC to announce this as we play several PAC teams in the near future.

Neither the Pac 12 nor Big 12 have conference scheduling agreements/requirements like the ACC/SEC/B1G do that would necessitate such a statement.

More to do with the fact that they already play nine "P5" games - in conference.

I think the reason for coming up with these conference scheduling philosophy/agreement is to ensure the conference SOS is strong. The higher the OOC SOS is, the better it helps the teams at the top of the conference that particular year when it comes to the playoff.



The PAC 12 doesn't feel the need to "up" their conference SOS because their conference games already produce a high SOS ranking. The Big 12 on the other hand is not very "in sync" with what they want to do as a conference.

The formal announcement that Notre Dame and BYU count also likely doesn't change too much. . . BYU hasn't exactly been a stranger to B1G schedules. The Cougars face Nebraska and Michigan this season, and future games scheduled with Wisconsin and Michigan State over the next few years. I do not expect BYU to be an annual Big Ten opponent or anything, but even if Delany didn't say they're acceptable, as long as BYU remains independent, I wouldn't be shocked to see them added to a few other program's future slates, including Ohio State.

It might boost the scheduling opportunities over what we've had in the Big 10. Also, it always helps to have formal, public acknowledgement that BYU is on the P5 level. And if so, why should an independent BYU not have the same access criteria to the CFP that ND has? That last issue makes this announcement quite significant. If BYU can get seven P5's plus BSU and USU on each year's schedule, plus a few of the top AAC teams, then that should be sufficient to warrant the same treatment that ND has ( all the frantic Ute protestations aside ).

It makes sense when you contemplate for a second that 1) those are the two conferences that recruit against BYU most frequently, and thus have reason to want to see BYU fail, and 2) if ever they do look at BYU as an expansion target, they want to hold more leverage in those talks--another reason to diss BYU.

No other FBS school has the future scheduling flexibility of BYU. So, doesn't this help us a lot? And even more so if other conferences follow suit? To me it seems this, coupled with the acknowledgment of P5 status, makes independence more fun and viable. Depending on the SOS you want, we should be able to fill our plate with the strongest and weakest teams from P5 with the best from rest as icing.

Agreed. It makes it easier to schedule P5 conference teams, and makes independence more workable. The oft cited issue of November scheduling problems could resolve nicely if BYU can schedule USU and BSU late, and also continue to fill in like they have for ND's every-other- year November date with PAC teams like USC and Stanford. Other conferences, like the Big 10, may also have every-other-year type scheduling with ND that BYU can fill in for, especially with that conference's new stated policy approving BYU as P5 level competition. I, for one, am excited to see how far BYU can get as a Major/P5 status independent. Independence IS fun, at least for fans and players.

As I reviewed the 2016 B1G announced OOC games, it is a little surprising as 8 teams have a FCS school on their schedules. So maybe 2016 is a transition year and they aren't scheduling more games after that. But where BYU could benefit is there are a couple of schools who have 3 non-P5 games scheduled in 2017 or beyond--and a couple of 2017+ FCS games they have announced. I suppose there is a chance those games could get moved and create openings in their schedules.

But really if BYU is going to keep an annual FCS game on their schedule, 2016 is full and there is only 1 home game opening in each of 2017 and 2018 and all away slots are all full.

Eventually our FCS games will need to go away. We have used it to balance out the 2 for 1's and N games on the schedule. I don't see that being a problem in a few years.

We need to start having FBS opponents for our payday games - not FCS.



Most teams from the MAC, Sun Belt, and C-USA play annual payday games at Autonomy 5 opponents. Many MWC and AAC do the same.



SDSU has recently played payday games at Michigan, Ohio St., UNC, and plays at Penn St. in 2015. Let's get SDSU a payday game in Provo.



Wyoming played at Michigan St. last year and has payday trips scheduled with Iowa and Clemson.



BYU needs to get involved and replace the FCS home games with G5 payday opponents. An extra $1 million from BYU's athletic department profits would be well spent here, IMO.
