byutxThis is likely my last Christmas break of my life, so my Christmas present to myself is that I'm going to watch every bowl game, or as much as possible if there are too many games at the same time. So, I'm going to one-up the sports writers who ranked the games based mostly on bias and guessing, I'm going to rank them based on the games themselves. All that matters to me is that the game involves good and entertaining football. Thus, a game like the BSU/Oregon game this season would rate much lower than a game like the Wyoming/Fresno New Mexico Bowl.
1. New Mexico Bowl-Wyoming over Fresno in double overtime thriller. Will probably stay in the top 5 all season.
2. Humanitarian Bowl-Idaho over Bowling Green in a shoot out with a great finish, not as good a game as the NM Bowl. Also, before Idaho, the WAC and WestIdahoCoug slap themselves on the back for this one, please note that this was the MAC's 14th straight bowl loss. Hasn't won a game since 2006
3. Meineke Car Care Bowl-Pitt over North Carolina by two with a FG at almost the very end. Relatively entertaining and close throughout.
4. Music City Bowl-Clemson wins in a close one over Kentucky. Some awesome plays by Spiller et al and a well executed fake punt. Pretty fun to watch.
5. Sun Bowl-Oklahoma over Stanford with a second half come back and some great defensive play
6. Little Caesar's Bowl-Marshall over Ohio in what started out as crap, but ended up pretty good in the 2nd half.
7. New Orleans Bowl-Mid Tennessee State over So. Miss with some pretty awesome offensive play by QB Dasher. Was close up to the last few minutes. If you hate our bowl tie-ins, it could be worse. Playing a Sunbelt (or a Conf USA) team would make me down right suicidal. Probably a mid-level game.
8. Emerald Bowl-USC beats BC in the rain. I guess only USC is the only PAC 10 team that was interested in their bowl to this point. Close until the 4th quarter.
9. Eagle Bank Bowl-UCLA over Temple in a slow comeback. Not a very exciting bowl game.
10. LV Bowl-BYU rolls Oregon State. Enough craziness to make it more than the average blow out. Probably a bottom 10 game, though.
11. Poinsettia Bowl-Utah rips Cal. More interesting than St. Petersburg Bowl, not as entertaining as the LV Bowl.
12. Armed Forces Bowl-AFA over Houston with some amazing defensive, offensive and special teams play (especially the FG at the end of the 2nd quarter and the kickoff return for a TD in the 3rd)
13. Insight.com Bowl-Iowa State over Minn. in an extremely boring game with a somewhat misleading close score.
14. Champs Sports Bowl-Wisconsin over Miami-Hurricanes made it closer in the end than it actually was. More proof that not having a real QB taking the snaps is a bad idea generally.
15. Texas Bowl-Navy blows out Missouri. Not pretty for Mizzou, fun for non-AQ fans everywhere.
16. Independence Bowl-UGA over aTm by 24, despite being outgained by them by 105 yards. This might have been the worst 60 minutes of football I've seen since the BSU/Oregon or Utah/Oregon games. 4 third down conversions in the first half and a bunch of turnovers and special teams snafus just made this awful. Is this really both teams' 13th game?
17. Chick-fil-A Bowl-VaTech over TN in a total snooze fest.
18. St. Petersburg Bowl-Rutgers over Central Florida in a major turd of a game. Outcome never really in question. Both these teams suck. Most likely a bottom 5 game.
19. Holiday Bowl-Nebraska blanks Arizona. I fell asleep a few times, thanks to the DVR I was able to rewind it.
20. Hawaii Bowl-SMU has their way with Nevada. Most likely the worst of all 34 bowls. Awesome watching the WAC suck.
