That's a good fit. The Jets and Heaps are a match made in heaven

Wouldn't be surprised if he makes the practice squad; he's the best practice player in the history of football. That said, I don't think being an NFL practice squader would be that bad a life.

As far as I can tell Ty Detmer had the most successful NFL career of anyone in the history of the sport.

He played more at BYU than any other team, so I guess we get to claim him.

Not "we" the haters and hypocrites! Feel free if you are"guess"-ing and ashamed to just not "claim" him.

All jokes aside, this is becoming a serious problem. This is now 2 quarterbacks that made NFL paychecks passed up for Riley Nelson. What a black eye on the program.

Who's the other one?

Nelson was mistake. But the bigger mistake was Doman.

Brad Sorenson - we let him go and he went to SUU. Currently on Chargers.

Heaps with Jets.

Nelson? OC of Logan High School. Good call Bronco, and Doman.

I wonder if Doman had never benched heaps in 2011 and we ended up with a losing record because of it if everyone pissing on him for putting in the QB that led us to a 10-3 record would now be pissing on him for not pulling heaps. Heaps made the Jets practice squad because he is the best darn practice QB in the nation. Put him in live fire and he sucks and the jets are going to find that out the second they release the hounds on him in practice. Sorenson is a different story though. That one BYU flat out missed on.

I wonder how Heaps would have done if Anae had never left. Doman was in so clearly above his head.

And to make a point and be clear about it, Doman gets a lot of heat and blame, hut that heat and blame all belongs to Bronco. When your boss tells you that you are ready for a position that triples your pay... you'd be the dumbest person in the world to turn that down. It isn't Domans fault he got the job 10 years earlier than he should have had it. If he had a real head coach capable of growing and developing the coaches underneath him (and alternately judging their readiness and ability for promotion purposes), he wouldn't have ever been in that position.

A healthy Riley was always better than a healthy Heaps. Check out USU, OSU, HI games and ones vs TCU and Tulsa where he was injured but still showed some success. He did poorly when he had fractured back vertabrae and limited throwing and mobility. He was a warrior and inspired the team with his toughness. If Heaps didn't have such a fragile mental state and lack of composure under fire, he would have had opportunity to play and start. He was not a leader that could rally the troops while under fire. This was proved out in KS and Miami. The real issue is that we didn't have adequate backups besides those two which gave us options during injury or shell shock.

For those that think I am a homer, I saw a foreshadowing of this at the MS game when Heaps threw an INT into the endzone and made no attempt to tackle or slow down the DB even though he was close to the action on the return for touchdown. Compare that to Riley vs the Utah blowout who at least gave chase to try and tackle the LB who returned the fumble for a TD. The O-line was a sieve and didn't offer great protection, Riley was elusive and scrambled to buy time to find open receivers. Heaps had a tendency to lock in on first option. Bottom line - Riley did more with less talent while the talented Heaps struggled under pressure and was quick to lose confidence in himself under fire.

I don't really want to get into the Heaps/Riley debate but to say a healthy Riley was always better than healthy Heaps ignores some really good things we saw in 2010.

Heaps' fragile mental state may have been the only thing worse than Riley's solid as an oak mental state that had him playing in games he had no business playing in. Why the coaches had him playing at times I have no idea.

I believe the program is still suffering dearly from the lack of leadership from coaches, team captains, seniors and those two quarterbacks that failed to make that situation work. It will always be a case of what could have been and the program still hasn't recovered.

That season ends up no different as far as record is concerned had the coaches done the right thing and started Heaps the week after USU. Riley did what good backup QB's do against USU - bring energy and fire in a desperate situation. The rest of that schedule was so soft, Heaps likely would have been back to his end of Freshman season self pretty quickly.

And yes, had Bronco been able to fire Reynolds so Anae stays, then yes, Heaps would have been better off. And if they weren't keeping Weber to keep an OL recruit committed (Mathews - who has also been a huge disappointment), the OL wouldn't have been so bad.

Having Riley Nelson and Jake Heaps at the QB position at the same time for BYU was bad for the school.

Sorry, I still don't know why this bothers me so much 4 years later.

I can't believe this debate persists on here. Riley wasn't great, Heaps wasn't good enough to start anywhere else; at best, the cupboard was bare.

It's like arguing what's better: Tuesdays or the middle seat on a plane.

Ahh, the Heap-ites and Riley-ites have emerged. At least we enjoyed a season with no manner of "ites" among us.

Many of us started the season as Taysomites, but at the end of the season we were all Christians

Because there really was not a clear right answer, no matter how much both sides argue. There was a clear wrong answer--a two QB system. We have a clear right answer now in Taysom Hill. Let's celebrate the return of Taysom and not dwell on the darker days of conflict and division.

And good luck to both young men as they pursue their respective careers!

Doman wants Tuesdays, but Anae thinks that the middle seat of the plane could be dynamic and hard to gameplan against.

This just in (sorry Boise...): Bronco weighs in that we could do both middle seats, and Tuesdays, as a way of keeping the peace. It hasn't worked anywhere else, but BYU recruits different kinds of athletes, ones that have no problem riding in planes on Tuesdays, in any seat, really.
