At BYU, he would be done. At Boise State, he will probably get suspended for the 1st half of the 1st game.

He didn't hurt anyone. There are no victims. It's a stupid law.

Someone old enough to enlist in the military and legally kill other people can't have a drink in his own, "free" country? At some point we need to reevaluate things. If you are old enough to go to war, you are old enough to drink. If you aren't old enough to drink, then you shouldn't be old enough to hold an m-16 and point it at people in other countries, as a representative of America. You can't have it both ways.

He should get suspended for the first quarter of the game, if that. It isn't like he did anything wrong. If he would have harmed someone, sure. But at worst, he trespassed, which he wouldn't have probably done otherwise if the cops hadn't chased him.

At some point, we have to start thinking rationally, and start taking back control of our reckless government and laws.

His punishment will be a slap on the wrist, and that only for getting caught.

I doubt that he'd be "done" here. I doubt that he'd have any more of a punishment than Hadley had

Agreed. College kids drink alcohol. More at some schools than others, but still.

I agree with you that something needs to be done. And I can see the argument that kids who can join the army should be able to drink (I can see it but disagree with it); however, I'm a big believer in the rules. Until that rule is changed (drinking age) it needs to be enforced 100%. Love the rule or change it.

I also believe that just because he takes care of the matter in the court system that that doesn’t limit the team’s ability to further discipline him.

My only comment above was that we'd not just let him go. He'd probably sit an entire game.

How do you drive in relation to the speed limit?

If you're asking if I speed, you need to know - I drive a Prius.

I don't think you answered the question. (I drive a Prius, and it is very possible to speed. Not that I would know. A friend of mine told me. Friend of a friend, actually.)

So drinking is synonymous with killing people in war?

A better question would have been about my word of wisdom observance. I'm way better at obeying all traffic laws than I am about only eating meat in winter. You can tell that by comparing my driving record and weight. I was being cheeky because I'm pretty sure that someone's falling short of perfection doesn't preclude them from believing that perfection should be the goal

The point isn't about perfection, it's about punishment. Do you think you should get a ticket every time you intentionally exceed the lawful speed limit?

For the record, he was arrested not only for alcoholic consumption, which you can debate all you want, (I at least see the harmful consequences of alcohol, and understand the reasons behind the law especialky as it relates to minors) he was also busted for trying to escape the police. Now I'm NOT saying that means he should be done--kids do really stupid things and deserve chances to change and improve, but this is not just about some kid drunk at a party.

No, he wasn't busted for trying to escape. He was cited for "resisting or obstructing officers", which in Idaho can be as simple as not responding to the question "who bought you guys the booze?".

The article indicates that he ran and hid from the cops when they pulled up to the scene. The resisting arrest was a righteous pinch.

And I would welcome 100% enforcement of traffic laws. I've almost been killed twice on my morning runs by people who blow stop signs, I was almost hit once by a police officer who didn't use a turn signal indicator and turned right in front of me, I stopped 1 foot short of running into his car.

I think that driving is a really good example of compliance with laws. Most of us are perfectly fine with paying for our ticket when we get caught doing badly behind the wheel. The law has affixed proscribed punishments for our activities, and we know that when we break those laws and are caught what the punishments are. It is disingenuous for us, at that time, to complain about the law and whether it makes sense. If we really want the law changed, then change it, otherwise, when you mis-step you pay the price and move on.

Yes I would welcome a uniform application of all traffic laws. It is not feasable but I think that our roads would be a lot safer if we did just that. I would welcome a strict prohibition of all unlicensed drivers being precluded from driving. It would be nice if we could retrofit all cars to have the driver swipe a valid drivers license before the thng would start. That would have stopped my last two accidents from happening (two different times an unlicensed driver hit my car - totalling one of my cars) I would welcome those without insurance beign precluded from driving (an uninsured driver hit our van two years ago. She would not have done so had she not been on the road)

As for speed, my habit is currently to set my cruise control to 5 miles per hour over the limit, because I know that is what is allowed in central California. I would gladly trade those 5 miles per hour if I were to receive the benefits of better drivers being on the streets.

This is sounding like a BYU freshman religion class. Or a freshman philosophy class.

If you haven't run from the cops you ain't lived, said a ute grad.

From the police report:

According to the Boise Police arrest report, officers came to a residence following up on a noise complaint near West Hale Street and South Euclid Avenue near Boise State’s campus at 11:32 p.m. Friday night and saw a car pull up nearby with a few people exiting, but the occupants got back in once they saw officers. After officers approached, one of the passengers ran away, and after a brief pursuit, they located the man, identified as Finley, crouched in a nearby backyard. When booked, signs of intoxication, including an odor of alcohol and glassy eyes, were noticed by officers.

Running away from police sounds like trying to escape to me. The fact that obstruction of justice can cover even less serious actions, the dude did what he did, which is try and run away from the cops. He obviously had reason--very drunk and not wanting his coaches to find out. Hope and expect BSU to help the young man do some growing up and face consequences not try and escape from them.
