You can tell where the Bronco acolytes (Poppinga and Howell) are position coaches as they once again refuse to name a #1 guy until late in Fall camp.

Backup QB gives me little to no confidence.

TE inspires no confidence.

I've never heard of the Backup C.

Punters inspire no confidence.

None of the incoming guys are on the list as they weren't in camp. There will be changes.

I'm hoping to see some 4 and 5 receiver sets this year.

Agreed.

Tanner Mangum, Beau Hoge, and Koy Detmer should make the QB depth chart chase interesting in the fall.

On the offensive line, it will be interesting to see where incoming freshmen Nwigwe, Davis, and Jimenez emerge in the depth chart.

At DB/S, incoming freshmen Lake, Burt, Anderson, and Brent should make those positions fun to watch too. The only seniors among the 23 players at those positions are Sam Lee (the team "old man" this year - 2006 HS class who spent 2 mission, 1 medical redshirt, and 2 greyshirt years in his career) and Michael Wadsworth--both of whom are not mentioned in the 2 deep. The young guys are battling for spots and will hopefully will be around for the next several years.

The punters will be interesting to watch as they are both walk-on freshmen but Joshua Whippy (also on the BYU rugby team) has said he has been working on his kicking and hoped to factor into the competition in the fall.

How is it that this now the sixth season since Max and QB position is still perilously thin?

I love the optimism--"don't worry about our sophomore backup QB behind our injury-prone starter--we've got another sophomore coming off a mission in July and two true freshmen coming in to give us depth."

Funny I was thinking that myself, as in I was being the overly optimistic guy and I caught myself

With a healthy Jamaal Williams and a healthy Algie Brown, I hope to see primarily 2 (with a TE) and 3 reciever sets this year.

Two things stand out to me.

Our two starting d ends are on the two deep. Hopefully that is good news meaning that the two guys at one are legitimately better than Rowley and Peck. AT the very least it means we have more depth than last year.

Our 1 and 2 at tight end are both defensive ends. Our tight end crop must really suck. two defensive back ups who have been playing tight end for a couple months have nailed down the 1 and 2 spot. tight end recruiting and/or development has really become a weakness.

I miss the days of BYU tight ends cracking the defenses and beating the Utes.

Um! the TE crop has all dried up and blown away. Anae the great copycatter has forgotten who he is and what BYU was. Although credit him for remembering when we actually had to go back to a throwing quarterback.

BYU had an NFL prospect getting underutilized. If that's not a signal to any legit TE prospects, I don't know what is.

Those bemoaning the fact that we have converted defensive players leading the way at TE might want to re-educate themselves on Robert Anae's history and success with tight ends. Only one of BYU's recent "great" TEs was actually recruited as a TE, and he's the least great of the four:

Jonny Harline--walk-on WR (converted to TE soph year)

Dan Coats--scholarship WR (converted to TE on scout team partway through RS Frosh year)

Dennis Pitta--preferred walk-on WR (converted to TE during RS frosh year)

Andrew George--TE

That said, BYU's lack of productive TE's is more a result of the new zone-read offense in the Riley Nelson-Taysom Hill era where a TE just clogs up one side of the field on the zone read. Our TEs were very productive under Anae when Nelson/Hill have been injured and Lark/Stewart have run a playbook with very little zone-read option. If BYU ever gets away from this style of offense/QB (e.g. if Tanner Mangum pans out), expect to see the TE reemerge at BYU, and expect Anae to make playmakers out of whatever guys he has available, regardless of their position coming out of HS. But as long as we have Nelson, Hill, Hoge, etc. running the zone read option, the best thing a TE can do on 90% of the plays is keep the bench warm.

While I agree mostly with what you said, you conveniently left out the tight end musical chairs saga that was going on with a number of athletically gifted tight end recruits. That was on Anae's watch as well. Basically after Pitta and George left, the tight situation has struggled, no matter what offense we were running.

You mean that one season in 2010 where we started with 2QB for and ended up with Jake Heaps throwing to TE's a lot more after Nelson went down? I didn't realized I needed to itemize seasons that prove my point. That was Mahina's second best season next to the 2014 season where he emerged as a Stewart-friendly target--and every single catch he had in 2010 came after Nelson was out for the season.

In 2009, Anae had Pitta and George. 2011 and 2012, Anae was not here. 2013 he came back for the Taysom Hill show.

So yeah, there was that one season that goes to prove the point.

I would take George back in a heart beat. Very underrated TE.
