I realized someone had to go as Rose noted lately that there was not enough scholies, but I really didn't want to lose Bartley, especially after couple of years invested in him. Bartley has been below expectations, but with 2 years left, there was time for improvement.

Really wanted these guys to pan out for us, Bartley in particular.



Given all the guys coming in, playing time would be tough. I think a downside of this will be less internal competition on the team. We now just have a bunch of newbies competing for time as opposed to some seasoned players being pushed to stay relevant.

Depending on where he lands, he could be a 15 pt 4 assist 4 rebound 2 steal a game guy...

Bartley I'm okay with leaving after his most recent "performance", if you can call it that.



Nielson, we might regret losing out on down the road depending on how our post depth plays out.

yes, he was awful in that game , so was everyone in that 2nd half

I think both players were told they were losing their scholarships and decided to leave. Craig is probably right thinking they will both end up at UVU.

Well this clears up the roster situation a bit:

It also seems to address the 13 scholarship limit. We've seen that Jake Toolson will not be on scholarship this year since he was expected to be away on a mission but should get one next year. Also Nate Austin will not be on scholarship after getting a medical redshirt for one last year.

But this also means there is another roster/scholarship crunch next year. (Is there a roster size limit? I haven't been able to find anything that says so.) Austin, Collinsworth, Ellis, and Fisher graduate to free up 3 scholarships/4 spots. Dastrup, (TJ) Haws, Mika, and Pingree are returning from missions and Steven Beo (Walk-on) is coming in next year. In addition Toolson should pick up a 2016-17 scholarship. So that means they will be looking to possibly free up 1 roster spot (maybe a redshirt?) and 1-2 scholarships depending on whether or not Pingree gets one (he was a walk-on prior to his mission). Frank Jackson (2016 class) is going on a mission first.

Ellis and Ainge are walk-ons and Toolson is not, I believe. So we should have a scholarship available.





This will be an interesting rotation





At PG, SG and SF we have 120 minutes to fill. KC is getting his 34 minutes a night. Fischer will get around 28. So we need to fill 58 minutes from Chatman, Calvert, Toolson, Selijaas and Emery.



Maybe Hartsock or Shaw can play on the perimeter a little.



We have a wealth of PF's with Davis, Aytes, Shaw and Hartsock.



At Center we have Austin and Kaufusi.

Kaufusi getting a scholarship. Neilsen's scholarship loss for Kaufusi's is a big get for BYU, and a good trade. Neilson was not very good when he played, and his minutes are best going to Kaufusi, Davis, Aytes, and Austin if granted the medical redshirt.

Aytes is back in a boot and reports are Austin is still having back issues. With both those two questionable at best, Neilson leaving gives us no depth in the post. Andrus is gone. Worthington is gone. So, unless Rose picks up a big from somewhere we're looking at another year with a 4 guard lineup.

Assuming LoyalCougars' record is correct, then Ainge, Austin, and Ellis are walk-ons and Toolson is listed as getting a scholarship in 2016-17--but would also be a walk-on for this year. So by my count that is 11 scholarships used (Aytes, Calvert, Chatman, Collinsworth, Davis, Emery, Fischer, Hartsock, Kaufusi, Seljaas, and Shaw). That leaves the 2 available from Bartley and Nielsen leaving. But it sounds like there are no guarantees that Austin or Aytes are going to be able to play (still struggling with injuries). So maybe they are using those to try and pick up the graduating senior transfer C that was mentioned in another thread? Then maybe let the walk-ons battle it out for the last scholarship available.

Alan Hamson?

If Aytes and Austin don't come back in reasonable shape I think asking Neilson to leave is a mistake. Maybe he has some big guy promising to come that we don't know about but without these 3 the cupboard looks pretty bare as far as the inside players go. We have plenty of wing and guard players.

This really makes me wonder about Alan Hamson 7' 4", Jennifer brother. The Hamson's are huge BYU fans and there was talk of Alan walk-on the team, but it sounded like Alan was getting a lot of interest from other schools (team up North being one).

In High School Alan played with a server case scoliosis that limited his oxygen in take to under 50%, so he could only play for short spurts (5 minutes at a time). Even will limited minutes he still averaged 10.7 points and 7.9 rebounds per game his senior year at 6' 11"-7'.

Why not. The last gamble we took on a big turned out alright.

Nielson was not a true post player, he was a shooter that liked to play outside. That was not a good fit for the front-line as there are plenty of outside shooters. We need rebounders and defense. That was a weak spot in the line-up last year.



Bartley, while clearly athletic, was erratic in his play, and with a guard heavy lineup next year, his minutes were going to be limited. Good defense but inconsistent scoring, shot selection and prone to turnovers. While I believe he could have improved, he may not have had the minutes to progress to his liking.



I believe Austin will not play this year as his injured back does not seem to be improving. Aytes still has hairline foot fracture issues and the timetable for clearance is not certain. I believe Rose has some players that he is targeting - another versatile banger (Stanley Davis type) and a shot blocker (likely Hamson).
