Pitta is the NCAA Consensus 1st-Team All-American TE

"Senior tight end Dennis Pitta has been named to the 2009 Consensus All-America team. The team will appear in the 2010 NCAA Football Records. Pitta earned first-team All-America honors from the American Football Coaches Association and the Walter Camp Foundation... The first-team All-MWC tight end becomes BYU's 13th consensus All-American and first since running back Luke Staley in 2001."

Also, junior college transfer cornerback Brian Logan made the sportsillustrated.com All-America Honorable Mention team, along with quarterback Max Hall .



"It was based on statistics," Mendenhall said. "[Logan] was at the top of the nation in passes defended, which was unheard of... He's short, but he's not little, and he plays really well. As I have mentioned from the very beginning of the year, he has played probably better than any field corner we have had since I have been the coach. He has really been a great asset to our team."

How can he be a consensus pick when he wasn't 1st Team in the AP? Isn't that like saying, of all the AA teams we looked at he was 1st Team and we simply didn't look at the teams where he wasn't?

Consensus means "general agreement," not unanimity.



The NCAA consensus team looks at the other 5 All-American teams, and takes the players who made first team most often. Because Dennis was first-team all-american in 4 of the 5 other All-American teams, he is a consensus All-American even though he wasn't the AP All American.



Only 11 first teamers were unanimous selections.

The players listed had the highest number of points competing against players at that position only. A points system was used for the selections of the All-America team (three points for first team, two points for second team and one point for third team). Twelve players were unanimous choices by the five organizations used in the consensus chart — American Football Coaches Association (First Team), Associated Press (First, Second and Third Teams), Football Writers Association of America (First Team), The Sporting News (First, Second and Third Teams) and Walter Camp Foundation (First and Second Teams). Note: Each of the five teams has a different way of listing the returner or all-purpose player. For the purpose of the Consensus All-America team those categories were treated as one position.

Sole tight end Consensus All-American, but not Mackey Award winner. Something about that bothers me.



It has to give you some deep pleasure though to have that designation, especially when you began your career with no special fan-fare. I just hope he has success in transition to the NFL.

bitter as we may be about a TE trophy, I think All-American means much more. Most people couldn't even tell you what the Mackay trophy was for if you asked but everyone knows what an All American is.

I actually hadn't thought of it in that sense, but that's a great point.



It brings a sadness to think that we won't be seeing him on our field paying any more. What a pleasure that was. You always felf if Hall could get the ball even close to Pitta, he was going to come down with it. What a tough act to have followed Harline and make you think, "Jonny who".

Had such a great career he made most of us forget his ugly fumble at Arizona, as well as the non-fumble at UCLA.



Here's hoping Chambers can do the same.
