BYU's delay game

The only reason Gonzaga came back at the end was because of BYUs delay game.

Hasn't any won told them that the delay game only "delays the victory" just like a prevent defense in football only prevents victory????

I'm pretty sure the delay of game wasn't part of Rose's strategy. prevent defense on the other hand is purely stragetic. It was an error, HUGE error, but they didn't plan on taking the clock to 0 and not shooting. Only thing worse would have been a TO earlier in the shot clock OR taking a long shot that led to a fast break.

Was frustrating to watch that unfold. Zags had some solid d that possession.

I think he was referring to our offense late in the game holding the ball and burning lots of clock, getting us out of rhythm, and not specifically the shot clock violation.

Yeah, it would have been much smarter to shoot in the first 10 seconds of the shot clock and to have given Gonzaga more possessions with under two minutes to play  Some people just can't find a way to enjoy an outstanding win.

I thought BYU's delay game was brilliant. BYU was up three possessions (I think it was 8pts) with about 2 minutes to go. BYU knew they could essentially kill 105 of those final 120 seconds by simply not doing anything and putting ALL the pressure on Gonzaga to score quickly on EVERY possession they did get. Then even later in the game, BYU fouled when up three, thus preventing the Zags from tying the game.

BYU didn't execute probably as well as they would have liked (shot-clock violation, Haws missing 2 FTs). But the strategy was sound.

There were a lot of complaints in the past when BYU would keep the foot on the gas in the final minutes when up in close games. We lost games in the past because we kept shooting early in the shot clock in such situations.

It was brilliant coaching and near brilliant execution. Even when we came out of that time out and forgot about the shot clock it still ate up a full 35 seconds.

Fouling the Zags and putting them on the line instead of giving them a chance to shoot 3s was equally brilliant.

One made free throw by Haws in the final seconds and there would have been no hope for the Zags.

And then also being careful not to foul on the heave. Very good coaching!

If there is anything to question in the last two minutes it was KC's 5th foul on Dranginis off the long rebound out near the sideline and 40 feet from the basket with 7.8 seconds to go and a four point lead. Dranginis had his back to the basket and the clock was running. I get that it was an aggressive play on the part of KC, but there was no need to risk a hint of a foul and stopping the clock in that situation. Outside of that, a foul on a hustle play, the strategy inside of two minutes was solid.

Not on the coach.

Ya, that was a bone headed move by KC. Probably got caught up in the moment, thought he could get the ball and then maintain possession for the final 7 seconds. Not a bad thought but not the right one.

Had the game gone to OT, we would have lost with KC fouled out.

Totally forgot about that. Yes, it was a boneheaded play by KC which would have been awesome if he pulled it off. Those last 7.8 were excruciating. worst thing that could have happened at that point was to foul. Getting a shot off would have taken at least 2-3 more seconds off the clock and byu would have been inbounding the ball. likely one less possession for the zags.

Oh well. Turned out ok.

If I'm coach rose I tell Andrus to just throw the ball all the way to the other end of the court as soon as he touches it with 1.5 seconds left. Throw that thing high and long. no opportunities for missed FTs, no last second heroics for another dellavadagger. Maybe the zag gym isn't big/high enough to do that though.

Dunno why people don't do the Magic Johnson pass to no one play to close out the clock.

It was and you could tell by the way BYU slowed the game way down and refusing to shoot the ball. Like when Halford had wide open lane to the basket for an easy layup. he circles back out and starts the delay game motion.

Yes it would have if it is an uncontested shot in your normal offense at puts more pressure on the other team to have to score.

Except that Gonzaga had cut the score from 10 to 1 point in the first 45 seconds of that 120 seconds left forcing BYU to have to make pressure free throws which they missed except for Andus's at the end.
