I love Coach Rose...

But I'm ready to see him go. I hope this is his last season at BYU.



I don't think he's going to ever be able to fix the problems on this team and have no faith in his ability to manage future teams.



I know this will be disappointing to most of you, I hope you can still respect me.

The problem is who replaces him? Also, how many recruits do we lose if Rose isn't around when the RM's return?

Yep. Great questions. And extremely valid concerns.



Of course another concern is if kids coming off missions will come to BYU with Rose especially if the team falls out of the NIT.

It's 9-1 on fouls and you think the game was ref fairly?i didn't see the game as I'm out of town on business. But seriously? He needs to go?

I figured that I would see threads like this today.



What is the most important factor in winning basketball games? Talented, experienced players. Right now we don't have enough of them.



IMO we have a bunch of talented players in the pipeline who are gaining experience or will be back from missions soon.



You can blame Rose for scaring off Carlino. Fischer hasn't been what we needed. Aytes and Austin are hurt. Sharp is a disappointment on the court.

It is now morning Hawk and I have no doubt LadyHawk still respects you ;) Coach Rose will be the coach at BYU until Coach Rose decides he no longer wants to be the coach at BYU. This team is mediocre at best. You have to be able to play something that resembles defense and have a semblance of an inside game. This team has neither. It has been a rough year to be a BYU fan.

Dave Rose is the best hoops coach in BYU history...



He has fabulous talent coming into BYU ... fabulous



Injuries have hampered us the last two years



Even without Tyler a healthy BYU team next year is going to be near the top 25

Our bigs are either too young to start or too hurt to play or aren't figuring things out (Worthington, Sharp)



Next year we get an ideal 4 in Davis and a potentially promising 4 in Aytes... these guys are finishers

Nielsen and Kaufusi will get better... (Worthington might not) and I believe Austin will get a year back



Fischer needs to get stronger and quicker

KC needs to build endurance and a J

Emery needs to get ready quick, working on his handles for sure

someone like J Chatman, Calvert, Toolson need to put on their big boy pants and get in the gym and get explosive and we'll be vastly improved from this year



However: Josh Sharp should have been cut three years ago and one JUCO big that can rebound and score with his back to the basket should have been brought in...

even the Pepperdines of the world have guys like that... we needed 1



If you don't get better in college hoops, you shouldn't be able to keep your scholarships... when you're as limited as BYU is with scholarships and as tricky as missions are... wasted scholarships lead to NIT teams



Luke Worthington.... you're on the short list now... get better or get lost



Once Austin got hurt and Aytes couldn't play it was very apparent how broken our team was... our low post offense is nonexistent... and teams adjusted in the 2nd half of the season because they realized they didn't have to commit any time to worrying about it... and FLOP.... nothing Dave Rose could to unless he held Worthington and Sharps hands to the weight room and pick up games... these guys aren't D1 basketball players... they just don't seem to want it bad enough

Well said.

The last few recruiting years are worth waiting it out as if we get rid of Rose and it costs us many of the commits and current missionaries it would be really disappointing. I agree though that there's also a cost to keeping him if future commits see him as not getting the job done. Especially locally with what the U has going right now.



However, I think it's important to remember what this team was looking like before Austin did a McKay Jacobson and hurt himself in warm ups. We could over come Austin if maybe if we had Aytes. Rose is responsible for the depth though and for the second time in 2 years he's using a big that he didn't even expect to be playing basketball with Bronson and Corbin.



p.s.- Josh Sharp was a good recruit just because it pissed of Utah so much.

Please allow me to add Dalton Nixon to the list of players on the roster who are NOT D1 players. I don't know why on earth he is starting but seriously he does practically next to nothing on the court. I agree Coach Rose is a good coach. I've interacted with him a bit and really like the guy. He does need to do a couple things however:



1. Have a consistent rotation. I know there have been injuries galore this year but this has been a problem in the past as well. He needs to settle on the 8-9 guys who will be getting the bulk of minutes instead of putting in guys here and there throughout the season.



2. RECRUITING! We are having the post players issues we are having because of terrible recruiting. Sure missions make things complicated but we need to have a team where the next man up will be ready AND capable.



3. I think the program would benefit from some new assistants. We were spoiled having Coach Rice for as long as we did.

As for the issue with the Bigs it was indicated over on TBS that USU's David Collette wanted to Walk-On at BYU and was told no and yet we waste scholarships on guys like Sharp and Worthington. Collette would have been a much needed piece to the puzzle this year.

Wow! Break out the pitch forks...



A couple of "down" seasons and it's time for a new head coach? You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but I would expect you to have the same sentiment towards Bronco as both coaches have been struggling the last few years. Seems a bit hypocritical to call for the head of one and turn a blind eye to the other.



Rose has become a victim of his own success. Making the NCAA tournament 7 years in a row spoiled fans. We now feel entitled to it. Before Rose, BYU never experienced a stretch like that. Most schools never experience a stretch like that.



We've got some great recruits coming in. The future is bright. We got hit with some injuries that have significantly affected the team. Season would be a completely different if Aytes and Austin remained healthy. Fischer missed last night. KC was ill during the first time we played Pepperdine.



But, I suppose with Carlino gone fans needed a new whipping boy...

I suppose. But I'm sure Collette has ambitions of getting playing time. Rose probably looked at his current roster and future roster and figured at the time that there was very little opportunity for Collette to get playing time let alone work up to a scholarship. We have a bunch of post guys coming in over the next two years.



Regarding assistants, I think what's really needed is better defensive minded assistant. If I remember correctly, we lost our defensive coach a few seasons ago (can't remember his name) and since then there has been a drop in the defense.

After a night of sleep I'm content to give Rose one more year, but if we're not top 25 type team with the talent coming in, like Craigo said, then I'm not sure he should stay.



Regardless, can we all agree that an assistant coach has to be fired after this year's incredibly poor showing?

yes. sharp needs to go. worthington needs to go. need more depth at 4/5 to hedge against injuries. and yes, seems like we have grad assistants for coaches. not even sure what lancomne does except tweet. keep Pope and flush the rest.

The bloody cuts are coming, folks. Rose has been letting the Cougar Club know his displeasure all season about the fact that a few guys are going to lose scholarships this season because of the mission-age change and the flux that created.



Rose says that if anyone gets upset about the cuts that will be made, they need to take it up with President Monson since he didn't see fit to consult with Coach Rose before changing the mission age requirements.

I saw last year that this team wasn't going to be very good with Carlino and Mika departing. I didn't see the big men producing, (though I did have hope for Aytes, which didn't work out for obvious reasons). I "infamously" claimed that BYU wouldn't win 16 games if KC didn't come back, and although there is no way of knowing for sure, I think I would have been right. The last few games KC has been "off his game" we have been a dumpster fire.



Calvert will be back next year, and \he and Emery (if healthy) will be solid at the 1 and 2 spots (or just the 1 spot rotating, depending on how Calvert comes back). I do blame Rose for hitching his wagon to KC at the PG position, and for running off Carlino with the Cusick BS and then with the KC at point guard experiment. It just isn't working. KC is a dynamic player and needs to be playing off the ball, making cuts and going for offensive boards and putbacks. It is very clear to anyone with a modicum of basketball watching iq that BYU plays better when they have a quick guy at point that sees the court well and gets up and down with the ball (last year Carlino, this year Halford - although the latter isn't in the same league as the former). KC isn't that guy, FIscher isn't that guy, Winder doesn't even dribble with his head up - and therefore - isn't that guy. KC is quick for someone 6'6", but he isn't fast. We would have to change our offense and defense up entirely to play him at point, and it isn't worth it in my estimation. The positives do not outweigh the negatives.



Calvert and Emery are that guy, however. We are one year away from at LEAST 22+ wins and a decent season again, and then the next year with Mika back + the Lone Peak "reunion tour" in BYU Blue... we are talking a possible 30 wins and a deep tourney run.



Coach Rose makes mistakes, but he is a top 15 coach in the NCAA in my book. And lastly, he needs new assistants. Coach Rice might be looking for a position soon, possibly at the end of this year... I would love for him to come back and fill the spot in anticipation of Rose's retirement, which is probably in 4-8 years from now.

As much as I harp (and it has been over the top) about the double standard of fans expectations of rose and bronco, there's no way I want to see rose leave. I believe both coaches (barring some terrible seasons or some other inexplicable calamaties or opportunities) should leave on their own terms. Both have produced enough to have earned that from my perspective.
