Per his tweet. This is the worst news. Don't understand why he is making this move.

Probably realized that BYU wasn't really helping him in his goal to become an NFL GM one day. BYU is a challenging place to recruit to, and I don't think the NFL front offices would properly factor that in, so it's probably a wise choice to move to another program where there isn't an Honor Code disclaimer you need to put with it on your resume.

Tough loss for BYU.

A huge lost that will be very difficult to fill. Geoff has that intangible "it." Good luck, though we hate to see you go.

Two thoughts:

1- his position can be filled by someone else

2- I think he's created a system that can be followed by his successor

Ft. Collins is a nice location. It has natural beauty that should be a good place to recruit to, without the added pressure of the honor code. I think he is just smartly rounding out his resume. Work for top-flight power school--check. Work for school with unique recruiting requirements--check. Work for non-established school to help them improve--? Probably the most important thing on his resume because the teams in the NFL looking for a GM are probably teams struggling that are looking to improve. CSU has a current good foundation with what McElwain (sp??) built there, but it isn't yet what you would call an established football program.

He wasn't in the position very long, was he? I'm not sure about in the coaching circles but hopping from job to job brings short term gains but if you leave before you can pin down a solid list of accomplishments it doesn't help in the long run in most fields.

IMO, CSU is a sleeping giant. A large university with a growing student-body and plans to get a new on-campus stadium in a beautiful region of the country with a large alumni base in the top-20 Denver market. Has a Pac 12 rival, that isn't very good at recruiting or on the field. CSU historically has pretty mediocre recruiting, so not much else to do but improve.



As CougarFan87 pointed out, this could be Martzen's opportunity to take a non-established school to the next level.

In coaching/football circles a lot of people change jobs quite a bit, especially assistants and office staff. Not the job for someone who loves stability.

some of you have not been to fort collins. this is lateral at best and likely a downgrade. rival to a PACoCrap school? Thats a huge stretch. Sleeping giant? lol

He sure doesn't stick around in one place very long...

Fort Collins is regularly listed as one of the top places to live in the US. In 2006, Money magazine named it THE best place to live in the US for cities between 5K and 300K in population.

Ft. Collins is a GREAT place to live, and IMHO blows the socks off of Utah County, even more so if you are anything other than a white Mormon.

How great a place is to live really depends on what you are looking for in a place and/or if you have any ties there. Great for one is not so great for another. It certainly doesn't depend on whether or not you are a "white Mormon".
