Impact of SD Loss

The Pepperdine, Gonzaga and St. Mary's losses were understandable given their talent level and play of recent. USD was the worst offensive team, best defensive team in the conference. Yet, Johnny Dee drops 18 and their bigs dominate the paint in second half. The BYU team, without big men, Fisher and Winder contributions, is a shell of the former team and will be lucky to win another road game if this type of erratic, inconsistent play continues. NIT bound is now in jeopardy unless they right the ship and play with more tenacity.

I think this is a fair assessment of where this team is right now, and I don't see anything in your post that indicates you have given up hope (if indeed the bandwagon reference above is to you and your post). I do think this team is capable of going on a run down the stretch. We shall see.

Hearing that Collinsworth is suffering from a quad contusion and Winder's knee is still not 100 percent. Still have hope that when Austin and Aytes return, and the others return to health, that they can put together a good string of wins. Fisher's disappearing act (8 points and 0-3 from 3 pt land) didn't help nor did the team's overall 3/15 from 3 pt land. Interestingly enough we got 8 points from Nixon and contributions from Kafusi and Worthington. A win in the Marriot center would be a good start to re-group. Pomeroy ranking shows BYU still in hunt. Pepperdine lost last night so there is still 3rd place, St. Mary's and Gonzaga are class of the league and likely invites to big dance.

SMC - bulletproof SYSTEM with strong ties to foreign players. I'm always surprised they are in the hunt year after year. It's all about the system at SMC.

Gonzaga - becoming a scary sort of freight train that no one is going to be able to tackle for years to come...

BYU - hardly relevent in the WCC this year unless you are counting gym size, number of fans nationwide and availability of jumbotron and pregame theatrics.

Not having Nate, Jamal, Anson missing games really hurt BYU the post is killing us.

This is a bit of an overstatement... We have a number of the WCC's best wins this year. We've been fighting the injury bug. We can still make some noise, but this was a bad loss, it could be our only bad loss of the season. I get that it's fun to be depressed when we suffer a bad loss, but lets not overdo this...

Looks like Austin is most likely done for the season, which I'm going to say puts us 164% in the NIT and not doing well there.

I can't imagine Collinsworth not coming back. I think KC has a great skill set, but he needs to at least find a mid range jumper to complement his game.

We basically have to win the WCC tournament to go to the NCAA tournament now. Not impossible.



There's a slight chance we get an at-large, but we'd have to win every game between here and the end of the season except the WCC tourney championship game. SMC's wheels would also have to come off.



Austin shouldn't even try to come back this season. Just get better. Same with Aytes.

Agree, and I'm hopeful for next year, but it leaves us precious little to look forward to this season.

What are we saying Austin would get an injury-redshirt? That sounds unlikely to me.

I'm not convinced we'd have a great team next year. Let's assume Austin gets another year and KC comes back (he definitely should).



We lose Haws and Winder. Both of those two currently combine for about 40% of our points. Who's going to make that up?



KC - needs a jump shot and would have to increase his average to 15+ a game.

Austin - just doesn't score and don't count on it.

Aytes - who knows how good he is, but he'll probably be good for 12+ a night.

Fischer - streaky as can be. He's literally hot one night and cold the next.

Bartley - doubt he even starts, which is a shame because the athleticism is there.

Kaufusi - highly doubt he suddenly grows an offensive game. I'd be happy if he just worked on defense during the off season.

Worthington - doubtful.

Neilsen - doubtful

Nixon - potential, but he needs to work on that inside game.

Toolson - potential.

Returning Missionaries - crap shoot.



IMO, next season will be a lot like this season. 2016 and 2017, however, should be great teams.

I enjoy reading the posts on cougarcorner and usually, out of laziness, do so without even bothering to log in. But, today, I must have had an extra shot of Diet Pepsi or something, because I'm feeling inclined to actually log in and share some of my thoughts. Hence, this amazing post.



All is not lost with this season. Though I agree that the impact of the SD loss is not a positive, I tend to disagree with the somewhat negative predictions which appear to guarantee either no post-season, or at best, a game or two in the NIT. This outlook is too negative (and sometimes, I feel overall the reaction to . Too many unknowns and games remain. These provide a chance that things will turn out better than expected.



This team scores tons. Highest national average. Defense is atrocious. Certainly, there are many aspects on which it can improve. But, do not count the Cougs out just because we should have beat a mediocre SD.



You never know -- we could win the WCC Tournament or go on a fabulous run before the year is up and make a plausible argument for an NCAA bid.

I think we all believe that we can't lose another game up to the WCC championship in order to have a chance at the NCAA Tourney. Although that would make it possible, right now I'm thinking our only chance is to win the WCC tournament, which could happen.

The only way I see us getting to the NCAA given our "bad" losses (Purdue, Pepperdine), REALLY bad loss (San Diego), and lack of quality wins (best = 14-5 3rd place PAC Stanford?), is to go undefeated from this point out with two wins over Gonzaga. That would be one hell of a run, which is why I don't see it from this team. I just haven't seen anything in them so far this season that tells me they have the gumption to put together that kind of run.
