BYU, Michigan State announce football series

PROVO, Utah — Brigham Young University and Michigan State University today announced the schools have agreed to a home-and-home football series in 2016 and 2020. The teams will meet at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing, Michigan, on Oct 8, 2016, with the second game being played at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo on Sept. 12, 2020.

“I’m excited about this series with one of the top programs in the Big Ten,” said BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe. “We haven’t played many games in the Great Lakes region and I like scheduling opponents like Michigan State that we’ve never played in football. It’s exciting for Cougar Nation and it’s a great experience for our coaches and players.”

Michigan State was founded in 1855 and began playing football in 1896. The Spartan’s joined the Big Ten for football in 1953. MSU has won or shared a total of six national championships (1951, 1952, 1955, 1957, 1965 and 1966), captured eight Big Ten titles (1953, 1965, 1966, 1978, 1987, 1990, 2010 and 2013) and participated in 25 bowl games.

BYU was founded in 1875 and began playing collegiate football in 1922. Over the past 40 seasons, only four FBS programs—Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Florida State—have won more games than BYU. The Cougars have played in 33 bowl games, won 23 conference titles and captured the 1984 national championship.

Still wish we could get a few of these to start in Provo.

2020 is shaping up to be an awesome home schedule. So far we have Arizona, Virginia, Michigan St. and Missouri. The 2020 schedule overall will be fantastic

It appears the UNLV game will be in 2017 since this is now the schedule for 2016:

**Edit--just checked on 2017 and there is now 7 away games there too assuming the Southern Miss game was moved here. I'll assume at this point that the @ Southern Miss game went away until it gets confirmed as scheduled and put the UNLV game in 2017.

I like these announcements right before signing day.

I love the series. I have a brother that lives no more than 30 miles from MSU's stadium. I'd love to get back to that game.

Appears that both Mizzou and MSU both did some significant schedule changing to get BYU on their schedules. Maybe some schools are taking the SOS into account? If so, and the trend continues, BYU may have a much easier time scheduling teams in the future. All good things for independence (while we wait for that much talked about BXII invite, which I think is still a pipe dream).

MSU associate athletics director for communications John Lewandowski said the series with BYU -- which marks the first time the programs have met in football -- replaces games with Eastern Michigan. The Ypsilanti school initiated a conversation to eliminate the meetings.



The Spartans beat Eastern Michigan 73-14 last season, scoring 31 points off six Eagles' turnovers. Coach Mark Dantonio pulled his starters after the first series of the second half and called for run plays the final 13 plays of the game.

Interesting that Eastern Michigan approached Michigan State about cancelling the future series. So BYU was able to take the dates--which required rearranging the dates for UMass in 2016 and Arizona in 2020.

The Missouri Tigers will host the Eastern Michigan Eagles in 2016 and 2020, MLive reported on Wednesday.



Eastern Michigan was previously scheduled to play at Michigan State in 2016 and then host the Spartans in 2020 as part of the “Celebration of the State” series. However, new EMU athletic director Heather Lyke wasn’t satisfied with the terms because the 2016 game did not include a guarantee.



“When I took over as athletic director, I wanted to assess the whole football program, and scheduling is a big part of that,” Lyke said. “This was not an ideal situation. We couldn’t afford to play that game without a guarantee exchange.”



In turn, Eastern Michigan and Michigan State mutually agreed to cancel the 2016 and 2020 games, which avoided either school having to pay the $500,000 cancellation fee.



Enter the Missouri Tigers, who have been looking for non-conference games for the next few seasons. Missouri will host EMU at Faurot Field in Columbia on Sept. 10, 2016 and again in 2020 and will reportedly pay the Eagles $2.5 million for the pair of games.

So its all about money and Missouri would host both games for big money rather than do a home/home series.

Someone isn't thinking straight if they give up a home game with Michigan St. For $2.5M. They had to be in line to make way more than that from revenues from the game.

Hey, 1.25 for each game ($2.5 total) and we're only getting one cool mil for our one and done with Nebraska? TH--you need to hold out for more mula if your going to do us a one and done in the B1G. ;)
