AD: Kyle Whittingham still Utah coach

Kyle Whittingham will remain Utah's coach, according to athletic director Chris Hill.



Hill addressed Whittingham's job status in a statement released Monday night, downplaying speculation about the longtime coach's future at the school.

I think Hill saw all the backlash and ire from the fanbase circling around speculation that Whitt was done and he about-faced, begging Whitt to stay.

I think you're assessment is spot on Schmoe. Regardless of the personal differences, K-Whitt is the public face of the U football program, popular with the public, and the foundation for recruiting and the current commits. If K-Whitt is fired, or resigns because of back room politics - major fallout and disruption within the program.

I think it's worth noting that (a) the unnamed sources said Whitt was going to quit, and (b) the statement was not issued by Whittingham, but by Hill. Whittingham still hasn't made any public comment/statement, so the statement by Hill doesn't really tell us anything.



If you're Whittingham and you're pissed going to quit and it's already too late in the offseason to find a nice landing spot for the next year, why not wait as long as possible and burn this mother to the ground by quitting right before NLI day? If you're really torqued and quitting now versus in a week doesn't make much difference, why not wait and hurt the dude you're pissed at?

Yet that IS his personality AND if you think Hill has already, by letting such key ACs leave, made it so hard for Kwitt to really do much of anything in the foreseeable future, such that the writing is on the wall, well, torching might be the way to go....I know long long shot but still. who's got the marshmellows and weenies?

I recognize that is unlikely. That said, Whitt's silence in the face of the rumors and now Hill's statement is very curious since the rumors haven't been about Hill firing Whitt, in which case the Hill statement would suffice, but the rumors have been about Whitt quitting.



Utah said today there won't be a statement from Whitt until next week at the soonest, if at all. Which begs the question: if Hill's statement were 100% accurate, wouldn't Whitt want to second that as quickly as possible as he's trying to land both coaches and recruits? Until Whittingham says or does something to put the rumors to rest, no decent assistant coach is going to quit his current job to come to Utah, and opposing coaches are going to be in recruits' ears pointing out that Whittingham won't even say if he'll be back next year, much less the next four years.



Hill has tried to put potential hires and recruits at ease, but Whittingham has done nothing. Maybe it's just Whittingham using what leverage he has to make Hill man up and give Whitt and his assistants more stability, but if Hill doesn't do that, Whitt may very well walk out the door.
