What's the deal with Hall all of a sudden?

Per interview with Jay Drew where he asked Max why BYU has such a poor bowl record (9-17-1):

"If you look kind of back at some of the teams we [BYU] have had, we have had some great teams. But in between some of those teams we have had some that weren't. Especially when we played in the WAC, it just wasn't that great of a conference, so sometimes when we played tougher opponents, it might have hurt us."



The BCS has been saying all along that the non-BCS teams, with their better records, just don't measure up, even to some of the lower dwelling BCS teams. Now while that is probably true, the non-BCS conferences have been spouting for eons that such is not the truth.



I don't disagree with what he is saying, but I don't think I would have said such in a public interview. Hall hasn't been known to be as good of a media interview as he has been lately.

Looks like Hall is drinking the BCS Kewl-aid. Let's look at Ohio state's bowl record for the last 27 years. I'm too lazy too look it up. I'm sure it's horrible though. :)

Completely true and not a bid deal at all ...... There is a lot more parity in college football now than there was in the 80's and 90's ..... His quote is right on point .....

Ohio St is 18-12 in their last 30 bowl games. They have lost their last three and are 4-4 in their last eight. The Buckeyes have won four bowls this decade. BYU has to go back two decades to get to four bowl wins. The reason why BYU has stunk in bowls, IMO, is because they didn't care about them. Lavell and staff treated the lightly.

Maybe you should have used the other favorite whipping boy, Notre Dame: 14-15 overall in bowls and 1-9 in their last 10. The one win was last year against Hawaii. They are 0-5 in BCS/BCA affiliated bowls.

My theory for why the Lavell bowl teams lost was because they were a precision passing attack. They had not played for a month and were rusty. It took a half to get going. Usually that was too late. The truely great teams were able to overcome that.

Plua Lavell was old-school and thought of bowls games as just exhibitions. Things have changed and bowl games are much more important for status and money than they were back in the 70s and 80s.

Not to mention we played some VERY good opponents in the Holiday bowl and this was back in the day where bowls were limited and it actually meant something to get to play in one.

Didn't help that the teams practiced in the fieldhouse in tennis shoes when it was cold out.

BYU usually played a higher ranked team in the Holiday Bowl. yes, there were some bad losses in there too, like to Indiana, Virginia, and others, too. But many coaches had poor bowl records. Osborn did at Nebraska until the 90's, Bowden lost many at FSU. Bowls are different now. You have to win, not just be happy to be there.

Did they? Someone mentioned the other day in this forum that the only ranked teams we had played in a bowl game was the Iowa one we tied and the KSU team we played in the Cotton Bowl. I didn't check them on that statement as it sounded about right. Remember that in the 1984 season, when there still were a few less bowl games, that all we could get to come was a 6-5 Michigan team that had been ranked earlier in the season, but had been decimated by injuries, where many of those injured players were finally back by the time we played them. The point is that I remember it being hard to get ranked teams to the Holiday Bowl.

1979 Indiana was #16

1980 SMU was #20

1981 Wash State was NR

1982 Ohio State was #12

1983 Missouri was NR

1984 Michigan was NR

1989 Penn State was #14

1990 Texas A&M was ranked #13.

1991 Iowa was ranked #10

1993 Ohio State was #10.
