Bowlsby is firm that expansion doesn't make sense.

Evidently WVU's AD was on the playoff selection committee and based on his experience in the selection process that left TCU and Baylor out has been persuasive that the Big XII can make other changes short of expansion that grant them access.

Expansion is a loser $$-wise, even with greater odds of playoff berths and national championships.

Are you paraphrasing a different article. I get from the one you linked that the championship game is what made the difference.

This is very short sighted. I don't think the Big12 is banging at anyone's door, but if their champion doesn't get into the playoff more than 1 in 3 or 4 years it will hurt the value of their next TV contract relative the other conferences.

Expanding just to get a championship game all by itself is a money loser. Getting a championship game to give your champ an 80% shot at making the playoff rather than a 25% shot likely increases the value of your next television contract by more than the $20-25M year you're losing by splitting the pot among another 2 members.

From the article:

"We need to decide whether that's [championship game] the right way to go and whether that's going to have the right effect,” Bowlsby said.

. . .

Bowlsby reiterated there is no partner(s) for Big 12 expansion that make sense at the moment. The most mentioned candidates -- Cincinnati, Connecticut, Memphis, BYU, South Florida, Central Florida -- do not bring the equity to the table that matches the annual Big 12 per-school payout from the media contracts -- $22 million.

"That's right," he said. "Even more than that -- it's academic, it's competitiveness, it's geography, it's scope of program …

"Just getting to 12 so you can have a playoff is among the worst reasons to expand."

That's quite a slam. I think he's wrong regarding BYU and what they bring to the table. But, I am biased.

I think it all comes down to if they can hold a championship game without 12 members. The only hope is that the other conferences say no. TCU getting jumped by FSU after they won by >50 and FSU won by <5 on the same day shows that the championship game is one of the most important criteria.

Even then how many schools in the BIG12 have legitimate NC aspirations? As Bowlsby implies it's all about the money so why would Iowa State vote to expand and split the revenue? They aren't looking to make the playoff so they don't really care if TCU gets left out.

To be clear, this is exactly what he would say if they were going to expand. If they want to negotiate a favorable agreement with an expantion partner, they'll need to make it clear that they have the upper hand. You don't get the best deal by having your hat in your hand and saying "we need you"

I don't see why the Big 12 should expand.

It took a perfect storm to keep them out of the playoff to begin with. The other conferences all had conference championship games at neutral sites between ranked teams. All the Big 12 needed was the lower ranked team to win 1 of those 4 games. It didn't happen.

I would be surprised if what happens this year becomes a recurring theme.

I agree with this. Much like when Bronco says BYU needs two undefeated years in a row to be a national champion, the Big 12 will need to be left out 2 years in a row before they consider expanding. And unless that happens, I'll be happy for BYU to stay independent .

The Big XII could have just as easily had 2 teams in the playoffs this year.

The best way to maximize Playoff chances:

Have 11 football teams.

Play 8 conferences games (less overall losses).

Best for respect & stability:

Have 12 teams + Championship game.

Play 8 conference games (better OOC wins, more bowl teams in conference).

Someone needs to add Bowlsby as the definition of douche in Urban Dictionary. What an idiot.

Between the lines, though, this is just the schools not wanting to give up revenue, particularly the lower Big12 schools.

If the Big12 goes 2 - 3 years in a row getting snubbed, they'll change their tune. The contenders within the Big12 will start whining about the leeches. You can also bet the moment Texas gets snubbed, Bowlsby will suddenly find himself actively looking for new schools or a new job.

Biggest obstacle for BYU to get to the Big XII: West Virginia.

Seems like almost every article I see on the subject of expansion has a West Virginia reference or a WV troll in the comments whining about BYU. Twerps just got in and they're strutting around like a bunch of Utes.

Can't wait to see them get pounded by the Cougars out here at FedEx field in a coupla years.

I get that same impression. At least the AD just left for an NCAA job. We need Texas and OK to come forward now and push for BYU if there is any expansion.

Yes they lost Luck as AD. That should be a positive for us. He also leaves the playoff committee because of his new job.

Dan Wolken, USA Today's college football writer, was just on 1320 KFAN this morning and said "nobody wants BYU for expansion--why would they?"

But that is nothing but plain trolling from our good friend Tim Montemayor--Wolken is a rabid Ute fan. His one sentence USA Today bio even pays homage to Rice-Eccles.

Methinks they doth protest too much.

WVU hurts BYU only in the way that the Big 12 might not want to spread across that much of the country.

BYU is helped by the fact they're in the west because it's another TV window the Big 12 could have.

BYU should partner up with Colorado State (best market in the area, improving facilities) and put on a full court press to get into the Big 12.
