Coach Detmer!

Too bad it's not in some capacity at BYU.

DETMER HIRED AS COACH: Speaking of coaching hires, former BYU star quarterback, and 1990 Heisman Trophy winner, Ty Detmer, has been named the head football coach at St. Andrew's Episcopal School, a high school program in Austin, Texas.



Detmer, who played for 14 years in the NFL, takes over a program that posted an 0-10 record in 2009.



Detmer's father, Sonny, has coached high school football since the 1970s and is now at Somerset High near San Antonio.

I think this is a good thing. Detmer's biggest hangup with coaching for BYU has always been that he loves Texas too much. Doing some high school coaching will give him some experience and may give him the "coaching itch." If he gets the itch, the natural progression for him would be to BYU, as I am sure they would hire him on in some capacity.

Maybe he can send some great Texas talent up our way!!!

Detmer for OC! (No disrespect to Anae)

I like this development. I have always wondered about Detmer. His longevity in the NFL was due to his ability to mentor young quarterbacks more than his ability to win games, which has led a lot of people to think he can coach. But I've never been so certain, especially when people call for him to be the next OC (no offense BerliNY) when he hasn't called a game in his life.



This is a good opportunity for him to address the itch and demonstrate that his wealth of knowledge can translate into coaching success. I can't think of anyone who made the transition from NFL to Div-IA Top-25 offensive coordinator with no coaching experience.

I'd take Detmer as the quarterbacks coach in a heartbeat. That of course is assuming that Doman gets the promotion to the OC when Anae leaves.

Actually, IIRC Chow let Detmer call several complete games during his senior year. I'll post a link/source if I can find one.
