BYU vs Memphis

What do you think of Memphis as a bowl opponent?

First impression is that they are a good team and BYU will have to play good to beat them, especially the defense.

This thread not getting much attention with the other stuff going on. Desertnews ranked this as the #16 bowl. I see it higher. This could be two teams playing for a Big12 invite. A lot at stake for the game. Some other teams see their game as an audition too.

I like Memphis from the standpoint that they are someone we haven't played (I don't know if ever, but in a long, long time). I like playing new teams. I would have picked Cincinnati, but I'm okay with Memphis.

Memphis is a very good team and a quality opponent.

I don't believe there is any significance to the winner getting a leg up on the other in the sweepstakes of the Big 12 expanding. I don't believe the Big 12 will have their eyes opened to any of the winners in such a game. They're not that shallow.

I personally don't believe that if they expand, BYU will get the invite. I would be totally shocked. It's just not going to happen.

Sb nation just gave BYU bowl game 6 rank on watch ability based on the 38 bowl..better than the fiesta, holiday, outback bowls pretty cool.

5th in the nation in scoring defense (I believe). Sagarin has them as the favorite. Vegas has this game as a toss-up, a true pick-em.

The more I am out there reading, the more I tend to agree. I don't think BYU gets an invite to the Big 12 even if they do expand. Does BYU deserve to be in a power conference? Absolutely. All of the indicators put us there. I just think there is too much perceived trouble working with BYU's no Sunday play etc. And even though we can find solutions around them, it doesn't necessarily mean a conference will want to go through that when it could simply pick up Memphis and Cincinnati, or Houston and UCF, or whoever else. The writing was on the wall when we were passed-over by the PAC 12. That was a great geographic fit, and we have a history playing almost all of those teams. Yet, they chose our ugly step sister. That tells you all you need to know about how others see BYU as a part of their league. They see us as too weird, or too much trouble to have to deal with on a regular basis (no Sunday play, TV rights, Religious stigma), but not to schedule for a game here or there.

Frankly, I would like it to happen, because I think we could see a bump in recruiting, and certainly in money, but if we keep winning on an independent schedule, it will all take care of itself. The playoff will eventually go to 8 teams. An undefeated BYU will not be left out of an 8 team playoff based on the schedules we are able to get. Plus, with out of conference scheduling becoming more important for the power conferences to get in, I see BYU being able to get better games in the future--unless they give P5 conference champs an auto bid. That would hurt us.

I really like independence for all but one thing: the NY6 bowls.

Seeing Boise State in at #20 kind of drives the point home that for many of the Max Hall/John Beck years we could have been in a NY6 bowl under the current framework. Not being a part of a conference hurts us there. I don't think it hurts us in the playoffs, be they 4-team or 8-team: I don't think that we'd be top 4 after joining a conference in the next three or four years before the playoffs are expanded, and after they're expanded I think that an undefeated or potentially even a 1-loss BYU has a good shot at getting into the top 8 with a decent schedule. But being a good team but with 2 losses and ranked in the top 25 should merit a NY6 game. Under the current regime, it wouldn't. In my view the best way to correct that is not by joining a conference--especially a lower level conference like the MWC or AAC--but in lobbying for a rule change that the best non-P5 team also receive an invite, be they G5 or independent. That may not be the easiest way, but it is the best way.

The NY6 bowls have, in my opinion, lost a lot of their luster. I mean, they have a 20th ranked team in them playing. Not exactly amazing stuff there, not like in the olden days.

You mean the olden days where a 20th ranked Texas team gets a Bcs bowl over 5th ranked Byu :angry:

Lost luster, sure, but still a far cry better than our other options: playing on repurposed baseball diamonds.

The NY6 has scads more cash and cachet.

I'm glad we get Memphis. I've enjoyed the recent games against UCF and Houston. I'm excited for the upcoming series with ECU and Cincinnati. It's nice to get a crack at Memphis.

Our defense will be tested and we will have to have a quality game in order to win.

My prediction: BYU 38, Memphis 34 - in Overtime

BYU's entire bowl scenario is less than stellar.

But, it's not the NY6 Bowls that are the problem. In most years, if BYU finishes in the top 10, they can reach an NY6 Bowl.

The problem is that BYU goes to the same pre-determined bowl game regardless of whether barely bowl eligible or just missing the NY6 with 10 or 11 wins.

Now, 8-4 BYU getting 9-3 Memphis at Miami Beach isn't a bad bowl. In fact, as some have pointed out, most media outlets rank it in the top-half of games to see. The SB Nation articles has it as the top non-NY6 bowl game.

I'd like to see Holmoe negotiate like crazy to land a deal with Las Vegas, Cactus, Poinsettia, Armed Forces, and Miami Beach bowls and the MWC, American, Big 12, and PAC 12 where BYU could play in any of those bowls in up to 2 out of 6 years - with the various relationships that would allow the conferences to spread out and vary bowl destinations and competition.

Army and C-USA could serve as backups if the other conferences and teams don't have enough bowl eligibility.

I'd like to have a year with no bowl and take a slot that doesn't fill or trade into a slot based on how we did. Some risk but could be good.

Memphis is a fun match-up. Their D is their strength and will face our O.

If we are going to play Memphis, I would rather play in Memphis than in Miami, but that's just the foodie in me.
