SpiffCougI know it's late, but it's been kind of a crazy week. But here goes.
I spent Thanksgiving out in San Jose with my sister and took my youngest son to the game. The stadium was nice, facade was orginal (wasn't redone with the stadium's refurbishment a few years back) and dates back to the 1920s.
The stadium is up on a hill and would have a great view of the San Fransciso Bay if the west side of the stadium and press box were lower. I almost wished there wasn't much to the west side so you could enjoy the view.
The fans were quite gracious and I had fun interacting with them. They got a kick out of Austin Heder being Napoleon Dynamite's cousin, kept asking me if he could throw a football over the mountain or if he knew Rex-kwon-do.
During the 4th quarter, a fan threw a hotdog bun on the field and a bunch of seagulls kept swooping down and fighting over it. The Cal fans were cheering on the gulls to "get the Mormons!" When I told them the seagull was our state bird and the story of the crickets, they said, "We can't even get the seagulls right!"
At halftime there was a very awkward marriage proposal of three couples. Three guys, three girls. Only two of the guys were proposing. Their proposal seemed unrehearsed and strained and drawn out. There were some cheers, some laughs, but mainly just silence like no one knew what to do.
- BYU had a PER of 194.40 against Cal. That's four straight games of meeting the standard.
- BYU has met the PER standard in seven games this year. It's the most in one season since 2009 (11 games).
- Christian Stewart was on fire the 2nd half. He compled 47.1% in the 1st half with a 105.60 PER. But completed 71.4% and a 266.29 PER in the 2nd.
- Stewart has three games of four or more TD passes. The last QB to do that was Max Hall in 2008.
- In the last two games against FBS opponents, BYU has 21 plays of 20 or more yards. Opponents have eight.
- Bronco improved to 9-8 (.529) against teams with a blue helmet. And has won five of the last seven (.714) games against P5/BCS teams.
- Cal's 33.8 yards punting was the lowest for an opponent in 2014.
- BYU lost on average 1.2 fumbles per game, the worst rate under Bronco. Opponents have lost 0.8 fumbles per game for five of the last six seasons.
- BYU is averaging 36.2 points per game. If that holds, it will be the best scoring average since 2006 (37.0).
- BYU gave up 500 or more yards in three games this year. That's the most in any season since 2001 (six games).
- BYU gave up 300 yards passing in six games this year. That's as many as the 2010-2013 seasons combined.
