Head Coach Rumor

I heard that Bronco is thinking about stepping down after the bowl as he thinks this might be a good time to bring in a new head coach and for him to explore other opportunities.

I don't know if I believe this. His contract has not ran out yet. I don't see another better coach to replace him except for Andy Reid. I'm hoping this does not happen unless Reid gets a calling to come coach and he makes Bronco his DC.

It would not be a good time to change coaches with the tough early schedule next year.

Where is this rumor coming from? If it's from the same place the Big 12 rumors have been escaping from for the last few years, I'm not buying it.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bronco was thinking he could be doing better things with his life than dealing with the ungrateful and negative BYU fans, but I also believe this is mostly wishful thinking on the case of some delusional fans who believe that we lost games this year because we have firesides.

That is so aggravating. No one complained about the firesides when we won games. Did they help us win? Do they make us lose? Who can say other than the players. Actually, I think the firesides are helpful in two ways. One, the firesides help remind the fans of the ultimate purpose of BYU football, which is different from any other football team. We are not going to win at all costs, so don't be disappointed if we drop a game or two. Two, it also helps BYU in recruiting. Just read KVN's story. I doubt there is any negative affect on the game the next day. Once the players wake up the next day, I'm sure they are just as jazzed to play the football game and compete as if they skipped the fireside (they are optional for the players to attend).

I agree. I think the idea that a fireside makes players lose their edge is downright laughable. Like the players have to live 24/7 in a constant state of agitation and competitive hatred in order to compete at football.

It's my belief that the firesides have done more to benefit the program over the last several years than it has hurt.

Leslie and Blackmon both participated in the Cal fireside and they both had what they call their best games. It obviously didn't hurt their play.

Bingo! It's stunning really to read some of the negative stuff, the finger pointing, the recriminations about Bronco and coaching staff. Perhaps it's part of the BYU experience?

All that being said, I don't think BYU's fan base is unique in its unrealistic expectations (See firing of Bo Pellini for only winning 9 games a year, replacing the old Michigan coach, Lloyd Carr, for the same thing, etc.). It may be harder to swallow, though, since a BYU head coach is already accepting a unique position, with unique challenges, at a somewhat discounted rate for a college head coach of a major program. Ditto for the offensive coordinator. I, for one, hope that Bronco and Anae stick around for a long time. They brought BYU back from the brink of elimination to a proud, respectable program again. In my mind, they should be able to stay as long as the program stays clean, and BYU is playing good football. That doesn't mean I think they are perfect in all they do. But I cannot think of any better alternatives right now. They are doing a very good job.

I've always been on the Bronco band wagon and aside from a few really frustrating games with Anae (putting 9 wide on the line and running up the middle 3 downs in a row against TCU) I think he does a pretty good job. The Beck and Hall offenses showed that. Our offense was still fine this year without Hill or JSwagg.

However, this season has really been frustrating for me. Not because of the losses but the things that need to be our strengths (execution and maturity) seemed to really lack this year. The penalties that this team continues to get that are just dumb penalties are ridiculous. The coaches need to put a stop to that and it concerns me that they haven't. It's gotten slightly better but still isn't great.

You guys are nuts. BYU's fan base is no more "ungrateful" or "delusional" than any other team's. All fan bases whine and complain when they fail to achieve and fall short. Hell, if you get blown out in one rivalry game it can get you fired at an SEC school. Win 9 games every season... FIRED if you're at Nebraska.

We get fed dreams of undefeated seasons and playoff chances and some are hopeful enough to beleive. When said dreams are dashed, I expect to hear about. So should "they"

I don't think we need a new head coach and hope the rumors are false.

That said, disgruntled fans are the norm at any big-time college program. Are we big-time or not? Is BYU content with moral victories or is the goal for something much bigger?

According to Bronco himself, the goal is a national championship. He's put that carrot out there. Therefore, it isn't unreasonable to judge him according to the goals he's set for the program. Problem is there is no time frame. Impatient fans therefore get restless.

The stars aligned perfectly for a historic run this year. Even with Hill going down, points were still produced according to the standard Bronco set. The problem was the defense, a unit that in the past few years when ran by Bronco was the team's strength, which just rubbed salt into the wound.

If we had the Ziggy/Van Noy defense of a couple of years ago, we would be in the playoff this year. That is how close he has been. Just haven't been able to get everything to line up. But then that is true with a lot of teams.

The question on this rumor is, what is going through Bronco's head? The fan's whining could affect his thinking. The rumor said that Bronco told the coaching staff to work on networking with other coaches contacts in case he did leave. Maybe he was referring to a future year? Who knows.

But one thing CougarBoard almost always gets right is random posts about a player injury or transfer.

One thing I've learned over the years is if there is some new poster on CougarBoard asking if anyone has heard about a player getting hurt or leaving the program, that post is more often than not correct.

Thanks CC for not being CB.

I don't think its true and I hope it's not and that BM is here to stay for a few years.

But let's assume its true and speculate.

If bronco said 50/50; and assuming he wouldn't be fired this year (I think that is safe to say) what it supposes is that he may not want to stay--which height think is also smoke and mirrors but a shot across the bow of the donors and maybe the fans, but probably the donors who have Gotten power hungry, and he is sick of it and calling their bluff, sickened by the disloyalty.

3 biggest vulnerabilities that Bronco still has.

1. His thin skin toward media and some donors/fans. He has gotten better, it would appear, but he has long had this aire of untouchability, almost like the "calling" nature of this job should allow him immunity from criticism. He disdains criticism and maybe that is only human, but he can't talk about national championships out of one side of his mouth and then act like college football isn't one of the most scrutinized careers in sports.

2. Loses frequently to his chief Rival. Almost to the point of being dominated. And then by little brother to add insult to injury. And then chattering "chicken" like statements about his rival not playing. Not good.

3. Bronco keeps trying to move away from his greatest strength as a coach, his calling card, his greatest chance at a legacy--his talent and success as a DC. The BoT may disagree with me and say his role as a mission president is of far more importance-- and that probably is critical. But he keeps jeopardizing his HC job bc he keeps trying to move away from the greatest building block of his career and why he is a HC in the first place--his ability as a DC.

Its my greatest frustration with him and which caused IMO at least two losses this year and put a real downer on this season; and quite frankly taken almost 7-8 games to regain some ground.

But I would be very surprised if he is done. It's all just chatter.

Bronco's been a great coach for BYU. If he leaves, who do you get to replace him? Anae? Niumatalolo? Sitake? Would any of them have done better this season, losing a Heisman-caliber QB, leading running back, and many others to injury? Do any of them have more upside than Bronco, a coach who's had us finish in the top-25 half of the years he's been here and has an outstanding win % (not to mention doing the things that the brethren expect him to)? I certainly don't think so. This is the guy that the players advocated for the last time we were searching for a new HC. I absolutely think that Bronco is the right guy, in his time here he's moved our expectations back from simply making bowl games to getting ranked and making the big games.

But that's just it. Those players who advocated for him to be HC were doing so because he was coaching from his strengths. When that gets removed, when he is not the brilliant DC that he is, he is a different coach. There are many HCs that also serve as a coordinator.

I don't think the very respectable Kyle Van Noy tweeted out against just the players--he was questioning, "what's going on with the defense?"aa as if he has no ability to analyze the defensive scheme and effort.

Twitter from an AP writer.

Thanks.

Yes, he would kill it IF, IF, IF he also is the DC as well. He would earn respect from the players by exerting as much influence on the team as he could through his greatest competency--being a DC.

If the AD could help him get good assistant coaches, it could work.
