Matt willed them to victory against Georgia Tech with 38 points.



I feel sorry because he could have been a team making a big-time run. It was bad for us and bad for him.

I see it completely different. If he didn't want to be at BYU anymore and he is happy in life then I say good for him and good for BYU.

He's obviously getting the minutes and the chance to be a hero for his team that he wanted. If he wanted to feel like a big fish by moving to a smaller pond, he's succeeded and good for him.

He didn't get benched last year for no reason...

I'm not sure that Marquette is a smaller fish than BYU.

Marquette is not a small pond when it comes to college basketball.

Didn't realize that Carlino was playing for all the Marquette tourney teams from the past...again, they didn't even make the tourney last year and aren't looking like they're going to this year, either. It's like a kid leaving to go to Michigan for football. Historically great? sure. Currently? Not so much.

Nothing to do with the past, but rather your reference to Marquette being a smaller pond in the college basketball landscape. Just not the case. Weren't they the program that recently drilled BYU after the Cougars historic comeback win over Iona during Hartsock's senior year? Carlino and Marquette have no bearing on BYU's season whatsoever unless per chance they meet in the tourney. I for one wish Carlino nothing but the best.

To stay with your theme of "current", we will only reference the last 5 years of the NCAA tournament during which time Marquette has gone 7-3 with 3 sweet sixteen appearances and an 88-68 win over BYU. BYU has gone 4-4 with one sweet sixteen appearance. Marquette is no small pond in the college basketball landscape.

How is last five years current? That's "recent." Current is this year. He left a tourney team for a non-tourney team. Like I said, let's let more of this season play out and we'll see.

OK, so BYU is "currently" 5-2 and Marquette is "currently" 3-3 and at the "current" moment neither team is in this year's NCAA tourney. But all this has nothing to do with where this started. Marquette is no small pond in the college basketball landscape no matter how hard you try to spin it.

Schmoe, you made a dumb comment (possibly out of bitterness) and you got called on it. It isn't that hard to say you were wrong, is it? Just holding you to the same standards you hold everyone else to here. I just wish I could do it as perfectly sarcastic as you do, my friend :)

I wholeheartedly admit that, historically, BYU isn't as good a basketball program as Marquette, but was addressing specifically the current atmosphere of the two programs because we were discussing Carlino moving to a team that doesn't look as good as BYU this year and doesn't look like they'll make the big dance.

Halford? I'm glad he played well yesterday, because he has been terrible during the first several games this season. Also disagree about the full court press. SDSU pressed us all game and we still went toe to toe with them. Back to the op, it doesn't really matter how good or bad Carlino does this year, for whatever reason he wasn't able to get it done at BYU. HE is the only one responsible for being removed from the starting lineup when he was here. He could have been a great asset to this current BYU team, but he wasn't willing to do whatever needed to be done to excel at BYU.

There was a significant difference in SDSU man pressing for 90% of the game and the zone press that they unleashed in last few minutes of that first overtime. Had they decided to do that the entire game they likely would have had a large lead and exhausted the next day. That was some very good pressure.

If they had run that press earlier in the game they risk us figuring out how to beat it earlier as well and as mentioned Turing themselves out earlier as well. Might have actually played in our favor.

Winder has been the best at beating the press. Halford may get past it, but he'll stand there like a gimp dribbling it till his defender picks him clean.
