Jay Omer announced he will be retiring at the end of this year.

BYU is now in the market for a new strength and conditioning coach.

All the best to Jay.

With that said, I suspect this means that we will see injury rates go down in our players in the future.

What about the guy from Texas A&M? I know that's probably a bit of a reach, but it would be cool.

Is this dude still coaching? Is he still alive? Oh he's the big dude who storms around the sideline. Jk

Jay Omer is one of the weak links on the coaching staff. When a true freshman like Tejan Koroma can come in and be the strongest guy in your program that speaks volumes about 1) your workouts for the guys currently in the program, 2) your about ability to motivate those in the program because 3) those in the program don't have much confidence in your programs to make them the best conditioned athletes they'll see that year.

Good luck in retirement but this is a positive for BYU

Let's hope so? Because being forced into retirement benefits anyone more than just retiring does? :bug:

Perhaps a 'forced' retirement would mean we recognized a problem and are trying to fix it.

I hate seeing people lose their jobs; however, good people get fired everyday. It's not a character flaw, it's just sometimes it's best for everyone to move on.

The strength and conditioning coach is the one coach that can be in touch with the players throughout the year, so it is a much more important position that we probably recognize. I hope they get someone who can do skill work with the players, and not just work out monitoring.

Brandon Doman was talking about this on the radio yesterday and talked about how the hidden secret of the Utah football program is their incredible Strength and Conditioning coach.

He mentioned that Chuck Stiggins (the former Strength & Conditioning Coach at BYU) was that way for BYU when he was playing and he also hinted that this was an area that BYU was not doing as well in as Utah is.

He mentioned that these guys have access to the players during times of the year that the regular coaches aren't allowed contact and that they can have a massive effect on the overall success of the team. Pretty interesting stuff.

So is Doman going to be the next one with Pendleton as his assistant?

Then he said when Omer came on (his senior year), that Omer improved on some of the things Stiggins was doing. Apparently, though, Omer hasn't changed to keep up with changes in the field.

I don't know--couldn't it just be that after a 43 year career of training athletes he is actually retiring without being told he better or he is getting fired? Also, when someone is forced out they usually don't announce it as they are retiring after the season is over and have him stay on the job for a couple months. It could be that they've had internal discussions and decided they want to go in directions Omer isn't comfortable with and he decided it is his time. I wouldn't be surprised at all if his skills haven't kept up with the times--that happens to everyone. I just don't like the assumption without any information that he must have sucked at his job and was going to be fired.
