I tend to agree with him. I think CS throws the ball better than Hill.

Pass efficiency stats and completion percentages strongly disagree with both of you.

Pass efficiency stats and completion percentages don't take into account WRs dropping the ball. CS had a couple of games there early where even Leslie was butter fingers out there.

Pass efficiency stats and completion percentages also don't say anything about the ability to hit receivers on the run. CS may be guilty of over-throwing some receivers, but receivers don't have to stop or slow down their routes so they can try to catch the ball.

Hill constantly got critiqued by many on here for his inability to throw to where a receiver is going or should be. CS throws the ball where the receiver should be. IMO CS goes through his reads better, whereas Hill would check one maybe two reads and tuck it.

Hills longest pass on the season is 56 yards.

CS longest pass on the season is 81 yards.

Hill threw 7 TDs over 4.5 games - 3 of which came against UConn, a game that pads the rest of his passing stats.

CS has thrown 10 TDs over 4.5 games, counting USU. He threw 3 TD against UCF (better team than UConn) and 4 TDs against Nevada (also arguably a better team than UConn).

Hill had 975 yards in 4.5 games.

CS has 1308 yards in 4.5 games - nearly 400 yards more despite a lower completion percentage. Yes, he's throwing it more than Hill did, but that's because CS is a better thrower than runner. CS's strength is his arm.

Perhaps it is semantics, but I wouldn't necessarily call UCF a “better team” than UCONN, I would call them "roughly the same." Remember UConn has beaten UCF this year (but UCF has 3 more wins)

Also, shouldn't we give weight to level of competition... and in considering "level of competition,” it should be noted that they each played a half against the very same team. Weight needs to be given to the stats against Utah State, and that shows hands down Hill to be the better quarterback.

So essentially, if I may "Christian Stewart is a one-dimensional player, so he must be better at that single-dimension than the two-dimensional Taysom Hill because BYU chose to make use of BOTH of Taysom's dimension, but only asks Stewart to use his one dimension." Doesn't seem to be the stongest argument.

:skeptic:

Congrats--Christian Stewart has a longer completion. However, Taysom Hill averaged 7.39 yards per attempt prior to his injury. Stewart comes in only at 6.17, which indicates that even if Stewart is completing more long balls (which I would argue against), his incompletion rate negates the benefit of those longer passes.

Also, you seem intent on making a lot of hay out of the fact that Hill played lowly UCONN. Stewart has also had the benefit of playing against lesser opponents than Hill, two of which are worse against the pass than UCONN. I don't see you throwing those out of consideration.

Hill played against the #9 (Houston), #12 (Texas), #22 (USU), # 55(Virginia), and #86 (UCONN) pass efficiency defenses in the nation.

Stewart, by contrast, has played against the #14 (UCF), #22 (USU), #44 (BSU), #90 (MTSU), and #93 (UNR) pass efficiency defenses.

Despite Hill facing a much tougher slate of pass defenses, he still managed to put up better numbers than Stewart has done against a much easier schedule.

Even your touchdown totals work against you. Taysom threw 7 TDs in 132 attempts--a touchdown for every 18.86 attempts. Stewart has 10 in 212 attempts, or one for every 21.2 attempts, again--against lesser defenses. It takes Stewart 2.5 additional attempts for each touchdown Taysom gets through the air.

While Stewart might pass the "eye test" in the pocket better than Taysom, I would still take Taysom every day of the week instead of Stewart, even if the NCAA banned QBs rushing the ball in the interest of player safety, and I think the numbers back that up completely. If you're going by the eye-test, go recruit that Heaps kid that Miami has at the end of the bench. He throws a pretty ball too.

Never said CS was a one-dimensional player. You're putting words in my mouth. I said, CS's strength is his arm. Hill's strength is his legs. It's why there's been an adjustment in the plays called. You think it's coincidence CS has thrown 61% more than Hill in the same number of games?

While both played against USU, comparing the first time a QB has touched the field to the 16th+ time the other QB has isn't really fair.

I'd say a team with the #9 pass defense is pretty close to the team with #14 best pass defense. There isn't much statistical significance between those two rankings. 14 is also pretty close to 12 too.

Against UCF, the team with #14 best pass defense in the nation, CS produced 3 passing TDS (his first complete game as a Cougar). Against #9, Hill completed 1. Against #12, Hill completed 0.

Hills best game in passing TD's (3 TDs) came against the #86 passing defense. CS completed 3 TDs against the #14 best passing defense. :bug:

Stewart has also thrown more in games than Hill did because they were behind a whole lot more.

Stewart is not as good of a QB as Hill. He isn't a better passer. He isn't a better runner.

Fair or not, those are the numbers. Hill plsyed against two teams with a better defense than USU, Stewart played against only one. Stewart is simply not as good of a quarterback as Hill, and the numbers unquestionlingly show that

Yay for coach speak. If only Bronco talked more like that instead of the real issues.

I'm not saying CS is a better QB and neither is UNLV's coach.

I'm OK disagreeing with you. When the coach says "If you’re asking your quarterback to throw, they’ve got a better player in there right now than they had before." I understand that to be arguing that Stewart is better, because litteraly everybody is asking their quarterback to throw.

WRONG. CS is a better runner, passer, player, and contributor. Taysom is 0-0 over the last four games. He has contributed nothing. In fact he is a disappearing act. The only thing Taysom is better at right now is a patient and rehab-er.

And CS is 1-3. Would you rather be 0-0 or 1-3? For disappearing and contributing nothing, strange that Taysom's record over the past 4 games shows no losses. So … he is still undefeated for 2014. Also, in the last 3 games = No fumbles. No interceptions. No penalties.

Nice. Kick a man while he's down. That's cool.

C'mon Einsteins. You are missing the point. Think a little harder. Here's a hint: this has nothing to do with bashing THill, well, mostly.
B

cougs_rule, who exactly are you bashing for Taysom's injury? And how was it his/her fault that it (taysom's injury) happened on that particular play. It was a freak accident. If you don't want T. Hill to get hurt, the safest place for him was the bench.

I would have agreed. I think C.S. Looks like he throws the ball better, he also fumbles better and doesn't have the legs Taysom has. Overall his PER wasn't as high as I thought it would be after 4 games. Edge - certainly Taysom, even in passing it seems.

I actually really like C. Stew though. certainly glad we had him this year. He makes me miss the Hall and beck days of offense.
