Could you compare the PER of Taysom Hill and Stewart? I'm just interested to see their stats to this point as I believe they've each played equal time now this year.

Sorry for the bad line up, I can't figure out how to get the stats lined up correctly.

Taking out the USU game where Stewart's PER was 63.6, his average over the past 4 games is 127.5.



If you take out the USU game, completion percentage for Stewart is about 61%.



For Hill, eliminating the USU game where his PER was 178.3, his average drops to 137.8, and his completion percentage is 65.1%

Am I seeing this right? It loks to me that when we take out Tayson's best game (roughly one half of play), and Stewarts worst game (roughly one half of play), Tayson still has the advantage? That's not really that much of a suprise I guess

Wrap your stats in a

 block, type them in an editor like Notepad that uses a fixed-width font, and paste it in.

Then compare the talent levels?

Really? You think Texas, Virginia and Houston were the best teams we've played? average RPI of those 3 teams is 71.333333 repeating and none of those three in the top 60 teams currently.



UCF, Nevada, BSU, Middle Tennessee average rpi of 47.75 All except Middle tennessee rank higher than 50 with Middle tennessee coming in at 70.



If you meant to say "Taysom played the 3 biggest named teams on our weak schedule", I still would disagree (BSU and UCF hold a lot of credibility currently), but it is nice to beat 2 "power 5" schools, whatever that means. Texas and Virginia aren't great. They would be average teams in the MWC this year, just like BYU. I'd say CS has played a harder schedule with a less cohesive team so far. Tough spot to get thrown into.

Lol, we seem to be on opposite sides of the equation recently.



Texas is the best team we have played. Easily. BSU sucks, and so does UCF. Houston also sucks. Just because Texas is bad, it doesn't mean they aren't the best team. The other teams just happen to be miserable. BSU, USU, and the MWC are a joke.

I just like using objective measures (RPI seems most appropriate) vs opinion. So far, CS has played a tougher schedule.

Rpi is far from objective :) if the majority believes a conference is superior to another, then that conference has a higher SOS, even though they are a worse conference top to bottom. We experienced it in the old MWC days when we were the 2nd or 3rd best conference, but "statistically" were the 6th or 7th best.



Head to head is the only way to go.



Do you think that UCF would beat Texas if they played head to head? Come on, now. Don't pretend your way is better than mine, at the end of the day we are all just guessing. :)

I believe of you go back and look at how each has done against opposing PER defenses, you'll see that Stewart is basically right at the averages while Taysom was quite a bit better than average.

CS is hitting receivers in stride and making some nice throws. Throws we haven't seen from a BYU QB in 5 years so the perception is he's a better QB.

Is there more more lbs per square inch underneath the heal of my wife's high healed shoe or a refrigerator? Probably my wife's shoe and she's not overweight. However, the fridge probably poses a greater chance of damaging the beam under my kitchen floor than the shoe's heel. You run your team with CS at qb, and I'll take Taysom to qb my team. IMO, evaluation is more than just measuring some numbers...

Oh, wait, except that one small detail, that Taysom can't run a 12 second 40.

Who wouldn't take a healthy Taysom? I dare say no one. But his style and scheme seem to have proven once again that a healthy qb is far better than a spectacular running qb.

Thanks spiff. Exactly what I was looking for. You don't happen to have to PER vs opponents average PER do you?

Here is how each QB performed vs the opponents PER defense. For the USU game, I compared both QBs to the USU PER defense with the entire BYU game removed.

I like Christian Stewart, he is a good QB and we are lucky to have him as our backup. If the defense had held up its part of the equation during the 4 game losing streak, we may have won 2 or 3 of those games we lost. Having said that, Taysom Hill is a special player who will be playing on Sundays, Stewart's career will end at the end of this season.

Chrisitan Stewart is a serviceable QB. He makes mistakes and turns the ball over when trying to come back from a deficit, but he'd make a fine game manager if our defense could hold the other team out of the endzone more often.



Stewart has also improved. I was dreading every throw when he first started, but he's gotten better. He could still use a lot of work when throwing on the run, though.
