Coach Howell

He needs to be fired, and probably will so after the season is over. Nothing personal against him, just that it needs to happen. The defense can't be this bad without having at least one head roll.



I once had a class with a DB at BYU in the summer of 2011, and he admitted that the DBs did not respect Coach Howell because he never played college ball. Sure that was 2011, but perhaps not much has changed since then.



Also, I work with a guy who used to coach at Ben Lomand with Howell, and he told me how much Howell sucked there as well, and that the only reason he got his coaching position was because of connections. I suppose his 6-24 record there speaks for itself.

He never should have been hired.

If that's the only reason, it's hard to imagine Leach getting any traction with his players... ever.

Yeah, if that's the only reason, then that DB would be a dummy. I suspect that it's not the only reason/issue, though.

Agreed. Something is amiss on defense, biggest change is lack of bronco oversight. Talent seems to be there. Loss of Bills certainly took a lot of wind out of the sails of the defense. USU beatdown coupled with UCF tough loss may have cracked this defense. They did a much better job in half 2 of BSU.



Overall this team is a lot like 2nd half of year team of 2005. Put up lots of points, not much defense, big swings of momentum. Utah game 2005 was frustrating to watch to say the least.

If anyone should be fired it should be Kaufusi and Poppinga. They've taken the strength of the team and turned it into a huge liability. But most BYU fans only know 1 coaches name on the defense, so it's easy to pick on Howell.

Howell is the face of the defense, and Kaufusi and Poppinga had their position groups playing very well in years past with bronco in charge. The biggest variable between 2014 and the previous 2 years is Bronco not being DC. To be fair, it's hard to grade this defense with all the injuries.
