sandiegoblueI love BYU. Blue blood runs through my extended family. I only had 1 semester of BYU campus glory. My grades didn't cut it to get my degree there, but that has never changed my passion for BYU. My oldest son loves it there. He's a sophomore RM now.
Allow me to contrast this with my lunch with an old friend today. He loves all things U of U, which includes the usual hate for BYU. I don't hate the U. I have a hard time rooting for them though. I hate the hate that goes back and forth between fans on both sides.
My friend is all too pleased to see BYU's recent losses, especially after a good start like BYU had. He laughed like I imagine the people in the great and spacious building do. I don't feel rooting for the U makes a person bad, wrong, or evil. Just as I feel a person rooting for BYU doesn't necessarily make them good, celestial, and righteous.
Sometimes I root for Utah to succeed for part of a game, but then I usually find myself rooting against them as the game progresses. I wish I could let them go completely and have no regard whatsoever for their wins and losses. It's really difficult to do that.
One way I can imagine being able to completely let them go in my mind would be if BYU beat them 10 games straight. That's really difficult to do when we cannot even play them. And since BYU has been on the short end of the stick in recent years, it's hard to predict BYU would win if we did play, especially at this point in our current season.
But this post isn't really about the U. I simply want to proclaim my love for BYU. I love the school, BYU sports, the many great achievements and accomplishments by faculty and students, and the long and rich tradition of excellence and success across the board. I feel so good to walk on the BYU campus.
BYU is going to keep doing its best in everything possible. This is why I love the school. It's not perfect, but it's perfect for me and my family. I am forever blue!
