So basically, the offense is improved this year with the exception to the running game. That may be because we ran it more last year.



The defense is basically worse. I think we all expected a slight drop off in the defense but I didn't expect us to be giving up 11 more points and 110 yards more a game.

The running offense may be taking a hit from the Taysom injury as well. He's only played in ~4.5 of the 6 games this season as opposed to all 6 last season.

My theory is that, at least in part, if the defense is on the field most of the game then those numbers will get worse. Fatigue and injuries set in, and number of attempts goes up because they can't get stops (because of fatigue and injuries). It is a downward spiral, which pretty accurately describes the defense this year.

Interestingly enough, in our 4 losses through six games in '13 and '14 the average time of possession is BYU with 27 minutes per game average and opponents with 33 minutes average.

Not sure how data showing that Time of Possession is almost identical to 2013 supports his conclusion that fatigue is causing the poorer defensive performance in 2014. Am I missing something?

Wrubell had some interesting stats over Twitter about how BYU is basically throwing it less and becoming less efficient with it's running game.



I think in the past, BYU used the pass to open up the run. Anae 2.0 seems to have flipped that mentality using the run to open the pass. I wonder how much of this has to do with QB limitations versus BYU's new found infatuation with mobile QBs.

Before we get too alarmed, there is only a 10.9 yard per game rushing difference. 2 average running plays difference per game would explain that. I am guessing that our play count is down this year.
