It's likely that BYU is the most hated team in the state. It's for certain that BYU is the most loved team in the state.



For example: BYU is on a two game slide, with no conference championship to play for. Utah has just come off of their biggest road win in their new conference and have a shot at their division. The sports radio stations, because they like ratings, spends about 60% of their time talking about BYU (good and bad), 25% talking about the Jazz (this will go up as the season gets ramped up), and 15% about Utah.



You can be the most loved and most hated team in the state at the same time.

Wow not sure what radio stations you listen to but I listen to 1320 and 1280 almost exclusively and it seems like Utah gets more air time.

On both 1280 and 1320 they talk a out BYU in every segment. Sure, utah is supposed to be the topic of some of those, but it turns into a BYU segment.

They just had a story on KSL about ratings between BYU, the Jazz, Utes, and Real Salt Lake. BYU had a such a dominating lead over all the rest combined that it wasn't even funny.

It was a radio segment on Cougar Sports Saturday a few weeks ago, so I have no link, but you could probably email Alex or one of the guys on the show.

BYU is easily the most hated team in the state. And there are many reasons for it as the reasons are often called out as reasons BYU is "different" or "special".

- BYU is a private religious school while their contemporaries (Utah, USU) are public schools

- As a private religious school, BYU has behavioral and dress and grooming standards that their contemporaries don't.

- BYU enjoyed a significant period of success, including success over the other teams in the state. That certainly created some resentment among fan bases.

- BYU is one of the few independent schools--BY CHOICE. This has been taken by the other schools in the state and MWC as BYU thinking they are too good to associate with them. Yet another reason to hate them.

- BYU pitches themselves to the media as unique, special, etc. It obviously gets under the media's skin if you listen to talk radio very much. DJ & PK are especially critical of this (they have ranted about that for an entire segment on my morning commute before) but I've heard others be as well.



These are just a few ideas off the top of my head. And (like every fanbase) we have our share of jerk fans that don't seem to know when to stop.

FWIW I love BYU, but there are times that I hate us.



For example a good portion of the fan base has been incredibly jerky about the transition to the WCC. We as a fan base can be completely spoiled rotten, we can be condescending to other schools, looking at the size of their gym, or athletic budget and calling them "high school" programs. Good guys don't do that, they genuinely enjoy affiliating with other similar minded universities and enjoy a healthy relationship with the other programs.

I guarantee DJ & PK didn't rant about BYU for one second today. Not even for a moment. They are both off today. Hans and Scotty talked about the Utah game tonight all morning...which they should since it's being played tonight.
