BYU vs Opponents Thru Game 7

Thru Week 7



So here is how BYU is doing compared to opponent season averages. As always, I'm comparing the BYU game to the opponents' season averages (with the BYU game removed from those calculations). I have also begun adding in the numbers and the changes from the previous week.



UConn

Held UConn 3.4 points (10) below their scoring average (13.4). (+1.4)

Allowed UConn 8 yards (71) below their rushing average (79.0). (-0.8 )

Allowed UConn 118.6 yards (355) above their total offense average (236.4). (+4.8 )

Held UConn 14.6 PER points (97.62) below their PER average (112.19). (-1.1)

BYU scored 11.2 points (35) more than their scoring defense average (23.8 ). (+2.9)

BYU gained 100.6 more yards (205) than their rushing defense average (104.4). (-15.7)

BYU Gained 225.6 more yards (513) than their total defense average (287.4). (-3.7)

BYU was 42.6 PER points (177.14) above their PER defense average (134.56). (+1.3)



UConn is still the worst team in the first half of the schedule. And it also remains as one of the more complete games of the season. Good teams make bad teams look bad and this is what a good team in BYU (at the time) did to the Huskies.



Texas

Held Texas 15.2 points (7) below their scoring average (22.2). (-0.9)

Texas held tough against Oklahoma and with competent special teams and fewer QB mistakes might have pulled off the upset. But as it stands, Texas isn’t going bowling this year.



Houston

Yep, it’s official, Houston is a bad passing team that BYU made look serviceable. Houston is looking like a middling team that could miss a bowl, but will most likely limp into one.



Virginia

Virginia might wind up being the best team on BYU’s schedule this year. No change here with UVA having a bye.



Utah State

Allowed USU 84.4 yards (457) above their total offense average (372.6 ). (-3.9)

Was going with Chuckie the first few games of the season a mistake? The Aggies seemed to have figured some things out with Garrettson. It’s amazing what a healthy QB can do for a team. They wanted the BYU game in the worst of ways and appear to be using it as a springboard for the rest of their season.



UCF

Allowed UCF 8 points (31) above their scoring average (23).

Allowed UCF 39.5 yards (63) below their rushing average (102.5).

Allowed UCF 108 yards (389) above their total offense average (281.0).

Held UCF 23.7 PER points (115.35) below their PER average (139.07).

BYU scored 3.3 points (24) more than their scoring defense average (20.8 ).

BYU gained 83 more yards (189) than their rushing defense average (106).

BYU gained 7.8 more yards (342) than their total defense average (334.3).

BYU was 10.2 points (115.55) below their PER defense average (125.73).



It’s tough to beat teams when you start and finish slow and poor on both sides of the ball. In the first quarter, BYU’s PER was 51.40 and the defense yielded a 139.36. But the team figured out what they were doing wrong (sucking) and changed things in the 2nd and 3rd quarters when the PERs were 178.40 and 57.03 respectively. Then the Cougars got confused in the 4th quarter and overtime about which way to play again and reverted to 1st quarter form with a 46.28 and 146.25 PER. So starting and finishing out of sorts is a good recipe for losing winnable games.

So, if I am reading this right, the defense is struggling.

Yep, much more red for the defense as the season has progressed.

You have to back into this number by netting rushing defense yards from total defense yards allowed, but Texas is the only game where BYU would not be red in passing yards allowed.



Every part of the team has had good and bad moments, but passing defense is the most consistently bad. Even UCONN exposed us, but rushing defense more than compensated in that game.

As much as we laugh at Utah for losing to WSU, no way we'd beat WSU. Not with our secondary and inability to get to the QB.

I believe Nevada beat Washington State. Nevada has a pretty decent QB as well although he can be streaky.

So then if we beat Nevada, by the transitive property we are better than Washington State, Utah, UCLA, Arizona State, USC, Arizona, Cal, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Washington, and Colorado - hey, wait, that's the entire Pac-12... :evil:

Two weeks ago I would have agreed. However, it feels almost like we turned a corner on Saturday, despite the loss. Guess we'll find out if that feeling is accurate come Saturday and beyond.

Agreed. Texas appeared to clear that corner and may be on their way to bigger/better things than getting blown out by BYU.



Best of luck the rest of the season. I'm glad our teams played when they did. Tables seem to have turned lately.
