So, I'd like to backtrack for a second

Originally it was thought that Taysom would be out 3 to 4 months (begin rehab and such in January/February time frame). Given that, he'd be able to participate in the combine and more specifically at BYU's pro day.

Well, turns out he's off the leg for 6 months. Doesn't mean he's not going, but unless he gets a great eval back from the NFL, it's more likely he's back next year than before.

Also means that he's going to miss Spring ball. Hosick will be getting a TON of reps (Mangum isn't scheduled to be back until less than a month before fall practice starts).

Mangum deserves a red-shirt season. And time will tell whether he is the real deal or not.

I expect to see some QB transfer in. Some 5th year senior or JC transfer. Hill may or may not be ready to go next year and may or may not stay.

I hope Taysom's ankle can heal so that he can come back. It can be hard to get the strength and mobility back in the ankle. Who knows if he will be able to be as effective. It's also going to hurt offseason progression. Freshman to sophomore there was not a lot of progression in his passing due to his rehab. Sophomore to junior he made strides in improvement as he had the offseason to work on his game and work with his receivers. He won't have that before his senior year, and it scares me.

I hope we've learned to not to start freshman QBs and Mangum redshirts. He'll need it to get back into shape and learn the offense.

If I am Bronco, I don't rest my hopes on a QB that may or may not be ready physically or may or may not attempt to go to the NFL. Luck favors the prepared. Go get a QB with a few years under their belt. We have a crazy schedule next season that's unfair to thrust a freshman in and one that Hills surgically repaired leg my not survive.

If I am Hill, I rest that leg up, rehab it and come back to play. Give the scouts another full season to show what you can do. And, during the off season learn to become more of a pocket passer.

The reality of the situation is that if a school like BYU gets a recruit/player like Heaps, Hill, or Mangum, other quality QB's will try and go somewhere where they have a chance to play.

And the fact is, most players that can play in Div 1 football do just fine as starting freshmen.

Mangum is likely to be special, but he's just going to get home way too late in the process to be able to be successful right from jump. Hosick should be the #2, if Taysom does come back and should play in the mop up duty spots. But if Taysom is lost for the year at some point, Mangum needs to be given the chance.
