Ha ha. Oh mizzou. Due to the fact that BYU lost their heart, lungs, kidneys and liver all in one tackle late in the first half vs. USU, I'm willing to give Howell some time to get things figured out. He's also dealing with a lot of injuries on that side of the ball. And suddenly the defense looks like a new unit last in the 2nd half.

The defense is playing great right now. With key personnel gone, Howell is calling the necessary plays to be competitive.

Defense came out flat, but stepped up after giving up 10 pts early. I thought Howell did fine. Loss wasn't on him tonight.

I actually was on a flight most of the game but was lucky enough to watch both teams' opening drives. Our defense has been on a crash course all season. A lot of us believe there is talent but it is being undercoached. UofH, UVA, and USU all had season-best games against this D. UCF had another great night. Taysom is 100% the reason for the 4 wins. That's it. Taysom is 4-0. The rest of the team is 0-2. :)

So, since you were on a flight, and only saw the two opening drives, you clearly didn't see how the defense was the only reason BYU wasn't down by 30 in the first half.



Howell called his best game of the year, by far. Poor special teams play and anemic offense outside of the third quarter were the reason for the loss.

I thought Howell called a good D. Without 3 of 4 DBs, our best LB, a hobbled Kaufusi, the D played well. We had a pass rush. We stuffed their run. Where things got tough was in long kick and punt returns and some short fields. My one beef was how well UCF moved down the field the first series. This is after we won the toss and deferred. To then give up a TD is a real morale downer.

Bronco can no longer bury his head in the sand re: penalties. BYU wins this game easily last night without idiotic "penaties of aggression", as he likes to call them.

My biggest ding on Howell right now is NOT his defensive play calling, or his heart, or what he is able to pull out of a battered up unit (which I thought was kind of impressive last night ... those guys who came in stepped up quite nicely). My complaint is that our tackling form SUCKS!!! How many broken tackles were there against the Cougs defense last night? UCF ran through arms and got jarred by shoulders, but rarely were hit, wrapped and put down. A hard form tackle is a beautiful thing ... I wish BYU would do it more. We'd win more games if we tackled better.

And then the defense completely shut down UCF and created turnovers allowing the offense to build a 24-10 lead. Your premise is wrong.

All three units were good and bad throughout the game. It was the tough running by Rbs that fired up the whole team. D had a big stop at end of first half and all that carried into Q3. And then true to form, BYU built a lead and then went to sleep on ST, O and D.

Yep, each facet contributed both to the team no getting blown out, gaining the lead and then losing it.



The defense struggled early and late to get stops and make plays. The offense struggled early and late to move the ball and get scores. Special Teams helped flipped field position and created a turnover leading to a score and blocked a game-winning FG attempt; but they also gave up big returns that put UCF back in scoring position and gave the Knights momentum to get back in the game.



This was a total team loss.

You can excuse the second facemask as "accidental" only if you're okay with your defenders grabbing guys by the head, which you should not be as that's how you get facemask penalties.

The tackler overran the play because the QB was tripped. He stuck his arm out. That's what happened.

You are ignoring your own data again. The defense allowed UCF's very poor offense and QB to have a season best day. While I bet the BYU offense beat the UCF defensive averages. Publish your data and let's see. And did not C-Stew exceed your PER target and win the PER battle. In your comment, you left out the part where the defense let them score 14 in the 2nd half and 7 in OT and would have given up even more if UCF could make their field goals.



The offense did their job. 24 points should have won this game.



UCF beat Houston 17-12 in Houston. They lost 26-24 to Penn State in Ireland. They scored 10 in a loss to Missouri and gave up a ton. Ignoring Bethune Cook man where USF whipped them about 47-10, BYU offense did ok. BYU defense did not.



Houston is your best comparison. UCF held Houston to 12 in a home game for Houston. BYU score double that on the road.



Conversely, Houston held UCF to 17 playing at home. BYU gave up 24 in regulation and 31 in total.



BYU defense is on a really bad trend relative to giving up yards and points compared to opponents opponents.
