Christian Stewart Start 1 Expectations

Here is the average QB performance for BYU QBs in their first start.



14 of 24 for 183 yards 1 TD 1 INT .568 complete 127.93 PER.



BYU is 13-14 in career first starts since 1978.

I really think BYU will continue to move the ball well until they get to the 30, then I don't know what's going to happen. Stewart got the team to the 30 on all his drives but 1 (maybe 2, not counting when he came in on 3rd down).

BYU had 8 drives in the 2nd half with Stewart. We got into the blue zone twice and came away with just three points.



Of those 8 drives, four went for 8 or 9 plays and fifth went for 6 plays. BYU gained 229 yards on those five drives. So Stewart did have some success - just not in terms of scoring.

Yes, one very preventable INT on the 3 yard line that hit Leslie right in the number.

CS can move the ball if. Anae doesn't get too conservative and our D shows up.

Um, glass half full prediction? Anae at the 30 with an uncertain QB: 3 runs up the middle and a blocked FG.

Thanks for the information. So he led the team to USU territory on 7 of his 8 drives.

My expectations are that he moves the ball but that turnovers will negate the movement and we will score even less than ucf's insanely crappy offense.



if taysom were healhty we would win this game comfortably because ucf's offense is just not good enough.



i really think that stewart is going to be like riley nelson. turnover prone. i really hope i am wrong but i have not hope at this point. i think the kid is in over his head and the team knows it.

I don't see how our D showing up will have any affect on the ability of CS to move the ball.

Stewart is going to have to complete 60%+ of his passes and go 2:1 TD/INT over 30-35 passes.



UCF's run defense is stout--Stewart is going to have to have a very good game for BYU to get to 20+ points and win this game.

Christian stewart could blow that starting game per out of the water and we could still lose if we allow another QB to stand back behind his line and pick us apart due to lack of pass rush and a DB who refuses to do his job the way he has been trained. We will win or lose this game on the shoulders of the defense.

I sure hope i am wrong. i don't know why everybody think stewart is going to be any better tonight than he was friday night. the players and coaches are saying the right thing but I am not buying it. this team is in turmoil losing taysom and there is no way we got it together in a short week traveling to Florida. i have little faith. someone please slap some hope into me.

Jordan Leslie acknowledged that he dropped at least 3 passes, including the INT in the Royal Blue Zone. If Leslie holds on to the ball like he should, the passing stat line is more like 13 for 29 for 220 yards, 1 TD and 2 INT. Not great, but better.



Now, account for the fact that BYU would have only been down by a single score, CS isn't playing hero and the play calling is likely more run-oriented. CS more likely goes 12 for 23 with 200 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT, and Jamaal leads the Cougars to victory with 150 yards and 2 TD's!

Never said that was my expectation. I was simply stating what he has to do if BYU wants to win the game. I don't think he gets there, and I expect BYU to limp home with a loss to a team they should beat, but won't because of mismanagement of the depth-chart.



If you're Ammon Olsen, are you regretting your transfer to SUU at this moment?

If I'm Ammon Olsen, I started regretting my decision the moment I became a backup at SUU when I could have been getting a BYU education being a backup.

Looking at Stewart's stats from his one full season at Snow:

Record: 11-1, encouraging in that the guy knows how to lead his team to wins

Completion %: 55.7% (60% + 3 games, 50% - 59% 3 games, Below 50% 6 games), Not very encouraging but maybe he had really lousy receivers

TD's: 37, encouraging at a little more than 3 per game

INT's: 10, encouraging at less than 1 per game which means after the three he threw last week that there will be a couple of weeks without an INT ;)

SACKS: 8, encouraging in that he know when to get rid of the ball without throwing an INT

What does any of this mean coming into tonight? Nothing since this is ancient history, but I believe that if his trend line tonight parallels his season at Snow then the Cougars come out with a victory tonight: 56% completion %, 3 TD's, 0-1 INT, and 0-1 sacks and BYU wins 31-17. Go Cougars!

Anything about a 50% completion rate and 2 TDs and less than 2 turnovers is gravy to me.



I expect he'll be at a 56% completion rate, 1 TD and 1 turnover.

My understanding of the situation at SUU was that, Crowton being Crowton, Olsen and the other guy were never starter and back-up, but that they would rotate series as QB1a and QB1b as Crowton has preferred to do with his quarterbacks ever since Brandon Doman left BYU for the 49'rs.



Since then, Olsen has far outperformed QB1a and the offense at SUU has developed to where Olsen is taking 80%+ of the snaps at QB, even thought SUU has not designated him or the other guy as a "starter" yet.

Sounds like Stewart exceeded all expectations.

That was exactly what popped into my head. RN II. He is trying to be TH without the speed nor the power. Tucking it way too soon and then gains 1/2 yard when 5 is needed. He needs to only run when nobody is within 20 yards of him. That is where his "big" runs came from. I just keep thinking of the silver lining. At least we will have TH for next year and TM watching and learning to take over the next year.



BTW anyone know what happened to all-world CB Trammel? Davis got schooled but I will give Daniel props. The boy can play when he doesn't keep peeking at the QB. We win last week if he (and the other defenders) don't keep peeking into the backfield but play there assignments.
