Bona nota: I was on the road during the game and the KSL signal was fading in and out as I drove so these observations are strictly from what I heard and read in the box score. I have not watched the game - and don't really plan to.
I will also try to find some silver linings for the season going forward.
- BYU has now failed the cover the spread in four of the last five home games. BYU has only covered the spread twice in the last 12 games vs Utah or Utah St.
- After averaging six blue zone trips a game, BYU got to the blue zone just three times. BYU also committed it's first blue zone turnover.
- (silver lining) Mitch Mathews and Jordan Leslie were targeted 11 and 12 times respectively. This is the first game this season where a WR saw double digit targets. Terren Houk also saw a season-high eight targets. So perhaps Stewart is both looking downfield and towards the TE over the middle more than Hill. This could be good gong foward.
- PER returned to the gold standard. It has won the last two games and 36 of the last 40 (.900).
- (silver lining) BYU had 7 plays of 20 or more yards. This was a season high.
- (silver lining) since missing against UConn, BYU has made its last seven field goal attempts.
- Utah State's PER was 223.46. It was the highest PER against BYU since Utah State's 226.37 in 2010.
- Two of the four highest opponent time of possession have come the last two games.
- Bronco is now 7-7 (.500) against teams with a blue helmet. (silver lining) UCF wears a white helmet (21-4 .840).
- BYU has given up 300 yards passing in three straight games. It is the tied for most in a season under Bronco (2008, 2005). BYU has not given up that much in three straight games since at leaset 1994.
- BYU has given up 18 first downs by penality. The Cougars gave up 24 all of last year. In 2000, BYU gave up 14 all season, and just 10 in 1997.
- BYU has yielded 34 points following turnovers. Last year the toal was 38 - including just three over the final six games.
- BYU's 53 penalties in the first five games are the most under Bronco and the most to start a season since accruing 54 penalties in 2002.
