Remember when BYU offense...

...consisted of QBs passing to 10 or so different receivers in a game? I think we need to go back to that kind of offense for Stewart and BYU's sake. He is a good passer, but we have to flood the field with open routes. Of course, that means the Offensive Line has to protect the QB to release the backs for passes, so I guess we are in a do loop until that gets sorted out. They have improved this year.

You mean like at the start of the season when Hill found like 11 different receivers against UConn?

I agree this needs to happen--not necessarily that ball distribution is a key, but rather because EVERYONE needs to step up to replace the loss of Taysom.



Spiff and Gunk are off as well--there were not 11 receivers catching passes against Virginia, and that wasn't even our season high this year.



For your reference, # of receivers catching passes this season has gone 9, 6, 11, 6 and 6--an average of 7 receivers per game, with the majority of the game falling below that average.

UCONN = 9

Texas = 6

Houston = 11

Virginia = 6

USU = 6



By comparison, in 2009 it went 7, 12, 9, 9, 6, 9, 9, 9, 7, 9, 8, 7, and 8 receivers catching passes--an average of 8.4 receivers per game, with the majority of the games being over that average.



I don't think BYU can survive UCF, BSU, UNR and Cal if it tries to live and die by Stewart, Williams, Leslie and Mathews. It has to be a team effort.

We ran plenty of those plays against UCONN.

I honestly think that we just got really unlucky against USU on the offensive side of the ball. 9 times (or more) out of 10:



* Hill and Williams don't botch that exchange and fumble, giving USU a TD

* Leslie catches that pass inside the 5, and we get a TD instead of an INT

* Houk catches a high ball inside the 10, and we get a TD instead of a FG



If those things go our way, it's probably 21-14 USU at the half (I'm still conceding the bomb), Stewart leads us down the field to tie with our first drive, then takes the lead 28-21 on the next drive, and it's a completely different ballgame.



I don't think a huge offensive overhaul is needed. We had 3-4 key plays that put us in a big hole, and we couldn't climb out of it with a backup QB. Stewart throws a nice ball, and once he's got some reps, the confidence to go through his reads, and the time to do so, his percentage will go up, as will the number of receivers getting the ball.

redneckjedi I agree with bad luck being a huge part of things. I kept saying during the game, "what are the chances?" over and over.



I also believe not utilizing the RB's on pitches, swing and wheel routes, etc. is hurting our passing game. When we have that going on, it opens everything else because the defense has to account for those guys.

Sorry, there were 10 players target against UConn.



8 players were targeted vs Texas.



10 players were targeted vs Houston.



7 players were targeted vs Virginia.



9 players were targeted vs Utah St.



BYU was spreading or attempting to spread the ball around quite well in four of the five games this year.

Hope we double down on the running game.



1. Williams is our best talent on the field. Lasike, Brown and Hine are all more than capable to contribute.

2. Our line is better at run blocking than pass blocking

3. The more we run the less we have to rely on a QB who managed to complete only 50% of his passes at the JUCO level.
