QB spot next year?

So I saw Taysom Hill's tweet this morning and got thinking about the QB spot next year.

Here is the 2014 depth chart;

• Taysom Hill - 6' 2" 232 - True Junior.
  
  Christian Stewart - 6' 2" 208 - Redshirt Senior.
  
  McCoy Hill - 6' 6" 230 - True Freshman (Returned missionary).
  
  Hayden Griffitts - 6' 2" 222 - True Freshman (Walk on) - Leaving on mission to Japan Kobe in Jan 2015
  
  Hunter Moore - 6' 2" 190 - True Freshman (Walk on - Returned missionary).

Stewart will run out of eligibility after this season and Griffitts is leaving for the Japan Kobe mission in January 2015.



But no worries--there are two new QBs coming in for 2015:

• Trent Hosick - 6' 1" 225 - Redshirt Sophomore - Transfer from Missouri via Arizona Western College.
  
  Tanner Mangum - 6' 3" 195 - True Freshman - Returning from Chile Antofagasta mission in July 2015.

I expect Taysom Hill will recover and retain that top spot for his senior year. But it will be exciting to see how the extremely young depth chart shakes out after that.

IMO, Taysom declares for the NFL draft. I hope that McCoy Hill or Hosick can make it possible for Tanner to spend a year on the scout team and learn the system without being thrown into it and go back to what BYU did in the 80's and 90's where QB's were a little older and more experienced when they became the starter.

Wow...Taysom declare for the draft this year? I checked CBS Sports NFL prospect list and he is listed as the 21st QB prospect (pre-injury). I wonder how his game will translate to the pro level since he hasn't shown himself to be a proficient passer. He certainly isn't going to rush so much at the NFL level.

I do also hope Mangum gets to redshirt or something his first year. He isn't listed to get back from his mission until July so he wouldn't even have the spring camp to get adjusted.

If Hill declares, he won't get drafted. He's isn't a great thrower and he's already shown a propensity to get hurt when running. No team will invest the two years in him it would take for him to become a decent NFL QB.



His only real hope of an NFL career is to get better, come back for his senior season and become more of a pocket passer.

He will explore his NFL future. If he gets positive feedback, he will jump. I agree that he needs a 4th year of experience before going pro to be successful.

I thought Mangum had been at BYU for one year pre-mission???

Well considering he was listed/projected as a four rounder last year, I suspect some of that has come up but mitigated by the injury. He could and would be drafted and a risk for any team unless they get him third round or lower. Could be a good steal if he can continue to develop as a passer. But nowhere to prove that this year, so a real gamble by teams this next draft. He will Be back. I'd be very surprized if he jumps with this injury.

Now maybe he will get that he has to use his mobility sparingly, like a precious gift and not a prostituted last resort bc the rest of the o and OC struggle to make an offense out of this team. Maybe he will follow steve youngs advice. He certainly was doing better but also creating a lot On his own. But just like Kaepernick and others, he has to become even still a better passer and he will be fine, draft wise.

Let's hope he can and does and gives Mangum a year to develop, bc the rest are not very good.

According to LoyalCougars, he was a grayshirt in 2012.

You do realize that Jake locker was just as injury prone, was a worse passer and didn't have the wheels that Hill has and went 8th in the draft don't you?
