GFGH on Ice Until 2015?

Robert Anae has been forthcoming that the GFGH offense (aka the HUNH neo-veer option) is built to cater to Taysom Hill's unique skill-set, and that it likely will not survive once Taysom leaves BYU.



So now that Taysom is out for the season, do Bronco and Anae shelve the GFGH and retool an offense suited to Christian Stewart to get the most they can out of him, or do they try to keep the GFGH in place to give the rest of the team as many reps as possible to help them progress and be better in the GFGH in 2015 when Taysom rejoins them?



Personally, I would expect them to keep the HUNH element, but to drop the veer elements nearly entirely--running it about 5-10% of the time as a change of pace, and even then it might be more of a wildcat with someone other than Stewart taking the snap.

K. I'll acknowledge my ignorance. What the heck does HUNH stand for? In my opinion and limited football knowledge I think BYU retains a portion of GFGH but expands the variety of throws and plays available to Stewart. Personally I see a more balanced offense being the result of Taysom's injury. I liked that Stewart still showed the ability to scramble when needed but he also seemed to have a decent pocket presence waiting for things to develop. When his line broke down and he waited a little too long and was hit as he threw is when he was picked off. I look forward to what BYU will do. I also wish we weren't on a short week this week so Stew had more time to prepare.

HUNH = Hurry-Up-No-Huddle

In the 2nd half of USU they still called some of those Taysom-style running plays and they didn't work for Stewart. I think we'll see less of that and more pocket passing. But this style change will be a big change on a short week. Hopefully it works out okay. And Stewart will hopefully settle down a bit--I think the sudden need to step in at the USU game had him overthrowing some of those balls.

Hunh gfgh can be run without the heavy read option emphasis.



I am surprised that even with Hill in vs USU, that we did not use Williams, Brown, Lasike, and Hine more to gfgh and wear USU especially with their rb, LB, going both ways. Everyone was supposed to be healthy. Brown is a good receiver. Flats. Wheel. Many ways to get the ball in their hands.



If Stew settles down and throws like he did in the infamous Friday scrimmage, you are going to see more passing plays moving forward. But, UCF defense seems legit.

My guess is we'll see more of what we saw in second half. CS isn't fast! but he's fast enough to escape and be mobile to throw! which is exactly what THill should have been doing instead of trying to break rushing records. Mobile QBs are getting killed in college and pros. Their days are numbered. Numerous examples.

Yet we see Payton manning (an outlier, granted) who has a pin in his neck and can barely swivel, but he's still producing like he's in his prime.

I'm acatually very optimistic about CS (not as a TH comparison) but that BYU will be truly going vertical with weapons back plus Kurtz, and screens and midrange. CAN WE GET A FRICKEN TIGHT END in the action?????

CS isn't all-world, but he will wrack up some yardage. Along with some more balanced read-option and more passing.

This is a large dilemma. We have no offense outside of Taysom Hill. Period. Do we go to a mostly passing offense with an Oline that can't pick up blitzes and have been conditioned for the run game?



I have almost zero confidence in our coaching staff.

It comes down to whether Stewart can hit wide open receivers deep that Hill usually missed. If he can, that will losses things up for Williams rushing and short passes to receivers and running backs. Stewart did it in live scrimmage this summer. He did not do it Friday night although 3 drops by Leslie did not help. In any event, it will be interesting if you can articulate 1 positive thought if the offense actually retool on short notice, and scores 24 points.



I am worried about them being able to do that. I am more worried that BY defense will let UCF raise all of their averages against us - especially PER and points scored.

Yep, the defense has sucked for 3 games in a row. Taysom bailed us out in 2 of them and got injured in the third. Our season currently resides in the defenses hands. If they get the defense playing better, we may win a few more games. If the defense continues to allow teams to walk up and down the field into the end zone, we are screwed for the rest of the year and will be lucky to go bowling.
