KingCougLast night was the final nail in the coffin for me as far as Bronco being HC. And lest anyone accuse me of getting too dramatic or overreacting after one game, the 4 straight losses to Utah already had me 90% of the way there. And I stayed on the Bronco bandwagon, often defending him on these forums, longer than many.
Nick Howell is a turd who deserves to be fired and never coach anywhere again. But to just use him as the fall guy for last night's debacle is to miss the bigger picture. Bronco, who apparently learned nothing after Jamie Hill, is the one who put him in that position. Bronco always uses terms like "fully invested." Well, a HC who is fully invested (BESIDES LOSING TO HIS ARCH RIVAL 4 TIMES IN A ROW) DOES NOT LOSE AT HOME, AFTER A BYE WEEK, TO A 2-2 UTAH STATE TEAM WHO LOST TO ARKANSAS STATE.
At least after the FSU loss in 2009 we could say they were superior athletes. What's the excuse for this? What was the team doing for the last two weeks? Just sitting around, reading and buying into their own headlines, and thinking they could just sleepwalk through this game and they'd get the win? A fully invested HC doesn't allow that to happen. A fully invested HC doesn't allow his team to get pushed around like an abused wife by the opposing team's players.
I hate to say it, and I really do wish otherwise, but Bronco truly is fool's gold as HC. He's a great DC but only a good HC. I don't see him ever getting us past that 10-3 or 11-2 ceiling. He hasn't been hungry, for lack of a better word, since the first few years of his tenure as HC at BYU. He's not a gamer who won't find himself getting beat by at least 1 or 2 opponents each year. He won't get us to an undefeated season, even when it's there for the taking like it was this year.
Who will be HC instead? That's Tom Holmoe's job. Not mine. But I'm done setting my hopes on Bronco. Maybe let him coach next year, before Taysom and Jamal graduate, but that's it.
