Nick Howell is an idiot!

Howell needs to pull his head out of his freaking ass! Every SINGLE time we only bring our front 3 they complete a pass for a significant gain. I usually just read these forums and hardly post but I can't keep quiet about this. This is beyond frustrating!!!

Is Bronco going to have to take the defense over again? It seems like every time he picks a d coordinator, they end up being busts. I have not been impressed with our defense/Howell this year.

I'd agree with that too! Robertson Daniel as well. You can't let a quarterback have all day in the pocket and not expect him to pick you apart!

I couldn't agree more. My friend and I were just talking about that. Bronco needs to take the defense back and never give it up again!

You and me both! I think we have enough of a sample size to see that the defense performs significantly better with Bronco as the D coordinator.

No but struggling. He could be better, but he should focus on the horrible DBs and DC go back to Bronco. The Dline is not good. Bronson still looks injured. And BYU made an average qb look all world.

If Howell did not get the memo by next Thursday, time for Bronco to recapture his own heart and soul as well as the heart and soul of the defense. Oh, and the fans. Fans maze a difference late Friday. Too late Friday.

I don't think Howell needs to be fired, nor do I think Bronco needs to take over the DC spot again.



What needs to happen is Bronco, as HC, needs to set some ground rules and parameters for his new DC. Howell is making the same mistakes Doman did as a new OC--he wants to take every shiny object he sees in other 3-4 defenses and make it part of his 3-4, and he's ended up with a defensive playbook that is riduculously over-complex. Bronco needs to put his hands on Howell's playbook and rip half of it out. "Nick, BYU has not run a nickle defense in the 9 years before you, and we did fine without it, and we'll do fine without it again. *RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIP*" Nickle defense is literally torn from the playbook. Bam. No more nickel and about 15 fewer things for our secondary to be worried about trying to execute at a high level.



If Bronco can just narrow Howell's focus to something the team can excel at, then our defense can at least do a few things very well instead of doing many things at below average execution. I think Howell is capable and can grow into a very good DC, but you don't give a brand-new first-time DC the same freedom as an experienced successful veteran DC. He made that mistake with Doman, and he cannot afford to do the same with Howell.

I agree with this. Plus our secondary is playing significantly below its talent level right now. Guys need to learn that if they don't play their assignments, they will be replaced with guys who will. We had 2 inexperienced corners play much better against UCONN than our experienced guys have played since then. I say if Daniel and Johnson don't clean up their play, they be replaced with Davis and Preator again. Simple as that.

I'll take those 2 in a heartbeat. I'm convinced now that Daniel should be moved to safety. He's a mean hitter but not a sure cover guy. That by definition makes him a safety. Preator and Davis are solid at CB. But I don't expect Howell or Bronco to do anything right anymore. They'll wait until the offseason to make any changes. This team is going to get torched by a bad UCF offense.

So, don't get your hopes up on Bronco taking over the defense anytime soon.

Having no pass rush is nothing new....BUT getting torched deep multiple times is new AND getting pushed around by a LB converted runner is a step back....

Seems to be slipping. Now we don't know what he said to players and coaches (he wouldn't comment on that) but he definitely seems intent on being more hands off.



I am fine with him getting away from the daily Xs and Os but he needs to instill some accountability. Right now, there doesn't seem to be any. Penalties haven't gotten much better. Players are playing out of position and getting burned. Team is not disciplined.

He lost this team? This is the same team we had a week ago that we were all discussing going undefeated. BM has the same issues over and over, then we act surprised. BM simply does not get his guys "up" for big games. The defense has had holes in it all year, it was simply exposed by a back-up QB and an LB playing RB.



A humiliating day. With this schedule BYU should have gone undefeated, I would venture to guess nearly all top 25 teams would go undefeated with our schedule. If we want to be a "big boy" we need to play against teams who gun for us every week, when you are good teams gun for yon and BM could never handle that.



BM is not going anywhere. There are no other alternatives for BYU that would make sense. We will have a good record of 8+ wins and BM will talk come up with a new slogan next year and we can all be proud we win the right way.

True, but with BM running the defense you could always tell yourself, "Well, at the least the defense came out to play."



Now the defense and offense appear to have gotten away from BM.



I think some of us, while we were winning, saw signs of trouble and weren't content with dismissing them - penalties, lack of pressure, average play calling, lack of discipline, and a team entirely reliant on Hill's legs. I'm not surprised by the injury. I'm not surprised by how horrible the secondary was. I was surprised that it was USU that fully exposed all of it. I would have put money on Central Florida or Cal.



Agree, BM, is not going anywhere. There really isn't anyone to replace him.



The church want's football to bring in exposure, well they just missed their best chance. We were the talk of the town.

Yes he has lost the team. When we had our best defenses ever (when Bronco was in charge of course) we simultaneously ran out some of the worst offenses in BYU history. Now that we finally have an offense again, Bronco decides to give up the reigns on D to a nobody who obviously sucks.



Bronco has a chance to fix things but has said himself that he's not taking over the defense. He has lost the team and is losing support all over the country. There will be more beatdowns this season. Count on it. No accountability and endless mindless penalties = failure.
