BYU v. VA stats that matter

Let's face it, this was an odd BYU win, (emphasis on the WIN). Here's a few stats that leave me reclined in my chair, scratching at facial hair.



Touchdowns and field goals: Virginia had 3 TDs and 5 FGs. BYU had 5 TDs and 1 FG.



Turnovers: Virginia 2. BYU 0.



Scoring in 1st, 4th quarters: Virginia beats BYU 7-3 in 1st. Virginia beats BYU 17-14 in 4th.



Scoring in 2nd, 3rd quarters: BYU beats Virginia 10-9 in 2nd. BYU beats Virginia 14-0 in 3rd.



Possession time: Virginia 40:55 (which is insane). BYU 19:05 (which is also in-sane-oh). As of writing this entry, the current leader in average time of possession is San Diego State at 37:26 and the least is Texas Tech at 20:10 (considering 128 teams). This was an exceptional difference. For information's sake, prior to this game, BYU was a middle of the pack 32:03.



3-and-outs: Virginia had 1. BYU had 2. This one is interesting to me because BYU had one at the start of the game, and then the second right at the end.



Total yards: Virginia had 519. BYU had 322. (And IMO, hats off to Virginia. Their offense handed it to us).



Directional punting: Can't really measure, but wow, Scott Arellano's punting was insane for this game. Need to boom it deep? No prob. Need to place it right at the 1 yard line? No prob. He's also gotten faster at getting the ball away. Virginia brought the heat a few items, and man, they got really close.



Win-loss for the season: BYU 4-0. This is it, baby. This is the one that makes me go oooooohhhhh yyeaaaaahhhhhh!! Going all 1984 again on us again, huh Cougars? This is "shut-the-front-door" it. We can pass to win, we can run to win, we can defend, and we have the special teams. Gooooo HINE!!!! What a beast. I shall shamelessly watch that highlight over and over. What a pleasure to watch the Cougs this year. I'm loving this. Yes, there's lots to improve on in many different stats, but adaptability matters and winning in different ways matters. We can run the table, Cougar nation. We can do this!!!

I think that, despite all the griping from fans about this game, this will be one of the best wins on our resume come season's end. Virginia is solid on both sides of the ball and will get a good amount of wins this year.

Good teams win these Kind of games. Go Cougs.

That PER differential is huge. Suuuuriously, gentlemen and ladies. I think Taysom played insanely well with the possession time and number of plays he had. Virginia found a way to control the clock, keep him off the field, and give our D all they can handle. I mean, wow. Total agreement here. I think Virginia's offense is really freakin good, because I also think our defense is quite good.



Does anyone know Taysom's yards per pass, and also the points per play? Rushing yards allowed up until this game was something really low, too, but I don't recall that one. Virginia had 192 rushing on us. That's too much for my comfort, and kind of makes me throw up in my mouth a little.



Kickoff returns taken to the house: 1!!!!!!



And yes Spiff, oh wise one. The initial omission of PER is indeed a CougarCorner faux pas ha ha. Now, if only I can embed Hine's kickoff return in my handle. I should have that figured out by now too! C'mon self, srsly, wtf? Now, back to Hine's 99 yards to the house I loved it not only for its scoredom and yardage and awesomeness, but also due to its religious undertones. I felt faith promoted with the "parting of the red sea" imagery which one of the announcers mentioned. As an innocent white male middle class resident of Utah Valley, I tend to correlate BYU athletic success with my personal religiosity and/or LDS Church truthdom.



Testimonies strengthened: +1 for TVRC.

GOOOO COUGS!! I root for these players with my heart and soul. Lots of areas to improve on, but wow, BYU did it again. One at a time, baby! Keep this rolling with USU in two weeks! They will want our heads. I don't know if players ever browse this stuff or not, but YOU GOT THIS!!!!! Rest and recover this coming bye week, but give each week after that your everything. Week by week. Play by play, you will end up with a fat ring from a very special bowl game.

Keep on with your mania. This team is in trouble. Relish the Texas game. It was As near a complete game as BYU willlay. They do not have the team discipline to make it through the season undefeated. I have left the church of the undefeated. BYUs offensive stats are Diminishing. Good thing they have USU, but BYU will manage to play down to their competition in stead of blowing them out.

Sorry, I'm not buying the hype anymore. I didn't expect a blow out today, but BYU will slow down in the polls until they lose and drop like a rock.

And when a transfer (jAckson) has to tell the team to settle down and not get caught in the hype when the team is merely 3-0 portends more hubris and more lack of discipline.

Good job Cougs! Loads of credit, but if you haven't learned discipline by now, that's only going to get worse under the pressure of a continued undefeated season.

Taysom gets a pretty decent PER when not throwing picks. The BYU pick kept Virginia below my defensive PER threshold.

I haven't had time to peruse the UVA boards, but I would assume a lot of talk is about their red zone ineptitude. That's exactly what we would be saying had we settled for 4 field goals. Our D was pathetic in giving up yards, but holding them to 3's in the first half saved this game.

I couldn't disagree with that statement enough. I quit reading once he said he had left the church of the undefeated. How can you leave that church when we still are (wait for it).....UNDEFEATED. BYU got outplayed in this game, the defense was horrible but guess what, we still won. Why? Because this BYU team is pretty darn good. we scored 41 points on 60 plays, that is very efficient football guys. Not time to jump off the bandwagon, it is time to jump on.

Another cool stat to ponder:



Average BYU score through 4 games: 37.5

Average BYU opponent's score through 4 games: 18.75



We are averaging the exact double of our opponents' scores.



And, having it be a 3 score difference is pretty freakin good. Of course, splitting it between first 2 and last 2 games gives two different pictures, but overall, we're doing well in the stat that ultimately matters the most...points!
