Yeah, Jay Drew had a blurb about it being TONIGHT as well, but ESPN lists it as TOMORROW night at 5 pm MST.

My guess is that the Call article is intended for print tomorrow.

It's going to be tight. Pitta without a doubt deserves it. I know they say they don't give awards out based on a "career", only on that year's performance but he got royally screwed last year by not being in the final three at the very least. As the NCAA leader in almost everything by a TE he deserves the award even forgetting the fact that he's 1st in all but one or two categories this year. If they try to pull the "competition" card again on this one, I'm going to be pissed. I'd like to see anybody get the kind of numbers he's had being double and triple teamed the majority of the last two years.

We're not just talking about a career though, we're talking about the leading TE receiver (statswise) in the history of college football.

If Pitta gets stiffed on this, it will be the only thing more infuriating than the Poinsettia Bowl II that is the Fiesta Bowl.

Just confirmed it on espn's website. What more did they want Pitta to do? The "other" TE on the team was second team all conference. The Mackey Award is now just be a big joke.

It is just a popularity contest, just like the Heisman and so many others are. It will usually always go to the player from a "royal" conference before a team like BYU. It is wrong and we all know how good Pitta is, so in the end it really doesn't affect his draft stock or his talent at all.



It probably will give him some inner motivation in the bowl game and afterwards, though.

What a crock. I watched the entire damned show waiting for the TE award presentation. The placekicker had a segement. The damn punters had a segment. The TEs get a ticker on the bottom of the screen? WTF?



What does a guy need to do to win an award? If Pitta played with Florida he'd be a Heisman candidate.



What a year for the non-AQ. First the TCU vs BSU baloney and now this.

Not only was Pitta robbed with this but college football fans continue to get robbed of the purity of the sport and acknowledging those that excel within the sport.

Here are the stats without names you tell me who the Mackey Award winner was.

TE-A: 57 cathces, 784 yards, 7 TDs, Long: 35 yds, 1st Team All-America, 1st Team All-Conference. Career Stats: 216 stats, 2,856 yards, 20 TDs, 46 yds. Once, 1st Team All-America, Three times 1st Team All-Conference.

TE-B: 59 catches, 739 yards, 4 TDs, Long: 35 yds, 1st Team All-Conference. Career Stats: 102 catches, 1,271 yards, 11 TDs, Long: 64 yds. Once 1st Team All-Conference.



Clearly based on these stats alone, TE-B "best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics, and community values of NFL Hall of Fame tight end John Mackey" (the stated criteria of the Mackey award). Mackey's career NFL stats were 331 catches, 5,236 yards and 38 TDs. So obviously the player with two more catches, fewer yards and touchdowns and roughly half the career stats of the other players most closely matches the level of production of the Hall of Famer.



Oh, TE-A was Dennis Pitta and TE-B was Aaron Hernandez.
