Taysom isn't sick, he is getting the snot kicked out of him.

Huge bruise on his left shoulder from a direct helmet hit after the Texas game. There is a point rapidly approaching that Taysom won't be able to take the beating being dealt to him by being one the only players on the field to reliably get first downs and move the chains. Teams are already gunning for him, and he puts his body on the line to keep the offense clicking.

If you add in a very subpar offensive line, and quirky gameplans/schemes/playcalls... it is a recipe for disaster. The line better learn to block quick, and Anae better gameplan to protect Taysom, or things are going to get bad.

Can you imagine this offense without Taysom turning "almost sacks" into first downs and touchdowns?

Can you imagine this offense if Taysom was not overthrowing receivers and was seeing wide open receivers like #11 Houk at least twice. Wide open and Hill was locked onto #9 or #10 much of the night.

Hopefully Algie Brown will be back Saturday and take some of the load off Hill and Williams - Brown runs hard and catches passes.

Ironically, bruise or no bruise, Hill settled down after being inaccurate early and accuracy improved - so bruise does not explain that. He continued to not see open receivers once Houston locked down #9 and #10. I would imagine Hill will see this on film and adjust knowing that if they put their best defenders on those 2 guys, a running back or a different receiver is a better place to throw it.

BAM. Algie Brown and Houk. Unless Blackmon figures out how and where to line up. Then BAM. Stretch the field and make VA put their best cover guy on him and go back to #9.

OL gave up 10 sacks in the two games. Hill had 50 carries in the last two games. Not counting missed tackles, that's at least 60 hits Hill took in less than a week.

He can't sustain that.

In addition to what bib said, Kurtz will be available soon (two, maybe three weeks). Also, there is big potential with Mahina, who is big, tall, and should take some pressure off from Hill in the short cross routes. Regarding Taysom's bruises, he now has nine days to recover in stead of just five like last week.

UVA's win last Saturday bodes well for BYU in two ways.

1: BYU players will be more pumped up for the UVA game now.

2: BYU will now get more credit for besting the. Cavs.

BYU by 20 pts.

Nobody wants to see the QB carry the ball that much - not even Anae. This is not a play calling or scheme issue. The OP makes ridiculous assertions.

There are several reasons for this - many a carryover from last year. The UCONN game gave us hope that last year was last year. Then we played two defenses in a row that can defend the pass including bringing pressure.

But that is just one issue.

If Hill improves his ability to know when and where to throw the ball and does not revert to past issues with mechanics when pressured, and throws it out of bounds instead of taking sacks, he will not choose to take off running so often when that was not the call.

When the interceptions and fumbles quit gifting points that keep a game that is not close ' closer than it should be, BYU will not be forced to use Hill to avoid a loss.

Defense needs to quit giving up the hail Mary. We need to have our punter quit deciding on his own to fake a punt. Our "lock down" DBs have not really shown that to be the case. Blackmon needs to get over himself and learn the offense.

There is a lot going on here. We never should have given up 15 points in 3 minutes. That was not play calling or scheme. It really got out of hand on a really nice play call and a really nice throw that would have led to a BYU score to end the half had a freshman receiver simply stepped out of bounds. Instead we got a hail Mary going the other way and Hill played the 4th quarter with Williams instead of their back-ups.

Losing Koroma was killer. Too many rookie mistakes going on and too many players trying to do too much.

BYU really struggled against that passing attack. That resulted in BYU offense having a long field the 2nd half. Do the math. Long field. More plays. More Taysom Hill carrying the team because the entire team - including Taysom - made mistakes that kept the outcome in doubt until the final tick tock.

Great OP. Great response. There are so many improvements that could be focused on, that if they are not, this little honeymoon Hill ( i think a local radio guy coined that) will end in injury. The UH game started to look a little like the Riley Nelson, cut duck and run routine. That will spell disaster with a high probability. Sadly my confidence isnt all that high with Anae or from Taysom to show restraint. Stewart better be paying attention to this offense. And Taysom better start using more receivers. And Mahina better start catching more than 50%. Good gut check, Blue!

Anae and Hill probably will show more restraint if the 23 point 1st quarter lead built with fans getting bored in the 1st qtr because BYU was making it look so easy ---------

Does not get gifted back resulting in a dog fight.

Hill was relatively untouched up until the late 2nd quarter meltdown in spite of him having sailed his first few passes and Blackmon robbing himself of a TD. BYU was rolling easy on offense and defense. Makings of a shutout.

BAM. Meltdown. Including some bad officiating.

Then 2nd half,

Then Houston decided to blanket #9 and number #10 with their best defenders, bring some pressure, and make Hill beat them.

With all the talk about cupcake schedule, BYU needs an easy opponent so the reserves can play 20 minutes or more.

All the sacks don't include all the throwaways sprinting to the sidelines running for his life, either. It really is unsustainable.

The OL must do better at giving Hill time to throw. He had time vs UConn and stood back and threw the ball well and all over. Texas and Houston were able to bring pressure and Hill - while still accurate - was not able to stand back and throw.

Hill did have 50 carries in the last two games, but if he was sacked 10 times, then 10 of those 50 carries were meant to be pass attempts. But 40 designed QB runs are still too mnay.

Hill's designed rushing attempts needs to be much more like the 12 (11 + 1 sack) vs UConn than the 24 (18 + 6 sacks) and 26 (22 + 4 sacks) vs Texas & Houston.
C

Do you really think there were 40 designed QB runs. You forgot to count the times he took off on his own for big gains on pass plays when you were subtracting.

Further, without mistakes across the entire team, Hill would not have seen the field in the 4th quarter. And we would have seen a ball control offense in the 3rd quarter while some fans whined about it being predictable and about us needing a blowout.

According to ESPN, however they define an rushing attempt, JW had 47 attempts in the last two games. Hill had 50.

I get that a lot of the running plays are read option, but Hill taking a beating equal if not greater than our leading rusher is not sustainable.

I know Bib likes to claim it's due to unavailable WRs, etc. but the fact of the matter is by simply toning down the read option Hill would be taking less hits.

I agree with this. Hill reads himself, whether or not it's the correct read, probably 70% of the time. It's time to start calling handoffs instead of read options.

We need to keep Taysom protected early, so he'll feel comfortable looking down field and going through his progressions. It seemed like, by the second half of the Houston game, Taysom didn't feel well protected, so he'd go through one or two of his receivers and then take off, even when pressure wasn't necessarily there and we had receivers open. The O-line needs to earn that trust every game so we don't see the Taysom of last year who felt like he had to do it all with his feet all the time.

A good chunk of the hits is based off of TH calling his own number. On passing plays if the pass is not there he takes off. Many times he could let the play evolve the buy time in the pocket vs looking and if it is not there taking off. TH is making the most efficient/impactful decision most of the time but it means he gets hit. There at times he could throw it away vs running for 2-3 yards.

Designed RB runs would help (as mentioned), as well has helping TH in the pocket. Guys should/would get open if he could buy time.
C
Cougarbib
Watch the replay. Guys have been getting open. Hill locks onto 9 and 10 and does not see 11 wide open at least twice VA Houston.

Talk about oversimplified and predictable. Do not call pass plays because TH might scramble. Do not fall read option, Hill might call his own number. Do not hand any more to JW. Fans are complaining that he is getting too many carries.

Wait - maybe we get Brown back Saturday.

When the team quits shooting themselves in the foot on offense, defense, and special teams, score and field position will allow a much more conservative offense.

If BYU had not let Hill Cary the team, BYU would have lost. I do not think any of you wanted to see that.

Issue I see is that he does not throw with anticipation. He waits until he sees a receiver already open and only then lets it go. This shows he has not yet learned to trust receivers. This failure results in him holding the ball too long, and forces him to scramble. The best passers learn to recognize when their receivers will be open long before you can actually see it. They let the ball go before a receiver makes his break. Hill has yet to learn this skill. If he does learn this, then the sky is the limit! If not, he'll break down under the work load.

Bib does not know what you mean by "unavailable receivers" and never made such a claim. Houk and others have been open and Hill was locked on a covered receiver instead of looking to the next one.

Taysom is getting 3 to 4 seconds to throw. He needs to throw to spots and not wait for the receivers to open up.

This week, he may not get 3 seconds. The UVA DL is legit.
