Unsung Heroes

I just wanted to point out some guys that we're not really talking about that had a big role in the Texas beatdown:

• Scott Arellano - the game had a chance to get real ugly at the start of the 2nd quarter. We were punting from our own 3 after being pinned inside the 20 and going backwards. Arellano gets off a 50 yarder and puts it out of bounds for no return. Contrast that with the punt Texas had from their endzone that Juergens returned to the 25 or so. Without this punt, Texas has some momentum going for them, they're only down 3, they have fantastic field position, and it's a different ballgame.


• Rob Daniel - this is the ensuing possession after that punt. Rob Daniel is out on an island on 3rd and 12 on the Texas 45, and Texas throws a smoke screen his way to try and get the first down. Not only does he secure the tackle after only a 4 yard gain, he strips the ball and recovers it, denying Texas the opportunity to pin us deep with a punt again. This completely changes the field position math, even though we didn't score. We punt, and on the next play Daniel recovers another fumble that sets up our second field goal.


• Michael Alisa - forced the fumble on the kickoff that led to our 4th TD and had the big pick, ruining any chance Texas had at getting back into the game, or even making it look respectable.

Who are your unsung heroes for the game?

Thank you for this positive thread praising players. Breath of fresh air.

Looking back now, I remember that the snapping problems in the first series were bad and getting worse. That could have been disasterious. I am proud of the guys for getting that glitch under control fast. It was never an issue after the first possession, and in fact i actually forgot about it until just now when I was looking for more positives.

Anae and 2J handled this well. They sat Koroma for a series or two so he could settle down and then, they put him back in. Freshman. Texan. Just too amped up in the beginning. He is the best blocker at center and it made a difference to get him back in there.

For sure. I wonder if certain posters on CC would consider that a sign that Anae can make adjustments, and just might be the guy.

Karoma (sp?) has been awesome. I haven't seen any negativity his way. Not sure why this is even an issue. He was amped up and missed some snaps, the coaches pulled him and calmed him down and he was awesome for the rest of the game. Michael Alisa is playing better than Bronson Kaufusi right now, so happy for his success. Robertson Daniel is living up to Bronco's Fall camp praise as our Best CB right now.

I like this thread. We rightfully admire the small town boy becoming one of the best players in the nation as well as other skill position players with their speed and athleticism. On the other hand I saw a clip where Karoma (me too) snapped the ball then snapped his head up to make his block. It's often hard to see that when you're watching Hill, Hine and other stars run, catch and hurdle, but where would they be without those horses making it possible. In the ratings given by the paper, the ol was given A-, their lowest grade, but what was their grade last year? There has been, thus far, a significant improvement in that line so I give my vote to them.

Excellent points. That was a critical time in the game and Arellano came through big time. So did the others. I'll go with the D-line as a whole unit. UT's game plan was to run the ball and play perfect defense. Well we broke their spirits eventually but I daresay the D-line got the first crack by shutting down the run game from the getgo. They dominated the line. I think UT knew early on they were in trouble.

One of the BYU DBs was quoted saying we have the best DL in the court which then allows the DBs to play aggressive. Not sure they are the best in the country, but their teammates recognize their contribution.

Great thread except for the slap on BK (what an "uneducated" opinion)-yes Alisa

Playing well, but overall the following:



my two biggest worries

1. Special teams. Better, but need to continue to improve. It's just that Tx looked so much worse. Kick coverage still showing signs of problems. Can't. Count on stupid fumbles and/or penalties by Opponent. But Arellano was huge. BTW, did you all see the UT tweet by a fan after the punt to the half yard line, who said "God is a Mormon bc that punt just bounced sideways".

2. Dline--studs. Not sure how much was addition of MJ and Taele and subbing and coming together as a unit vs UTs inexperienced subs and a total reshuffle during game prep week. Or all of the above. But credit the. Dline. They took UTs only strength and shut it down.



My unsung hero. Coach Nick Howell. Looks to Be really shaping into that role in Bronco-sequence fashion. I said a few years ago on CC that he was cut from the same cloth as bronco and it looks to be accurate.



But, its game 2. let's see what transpires vs an O that is for the most part pretty prolific. If it hold UH to under 21 points and the O scores 35+, then I go from my hopeful preseason predictions to my confirmed preseason predictions and 11-1 or even undefeated becomes a very plausible accomplishment.

Just want to clarify that my comments about BK were not a slap, but just the opposite. I think he was an unsung hereo because of the way he so quickly channeled the adrenaline that may have contributed to three bad snaps in a row.



He took a break, probably took some deep breaths, and got right back in the game unphased. Showed great maturity for a freshman!

I don't think Cougs_Rule was referring to your comment about Tejon Koroma (TK) but rather to the comment that Michael Alisa is playing better than Bronson Kafusi (BK), which is not true. Alisa is looking tough and doing a great job filling in, but BK is legit and a presence on the field.

exactly. thanks DeVon. assuming BK doesnt run into a streak of injuries, we will see BK playing on sunday.

I think that PoVey was probably the greatest unsung hero from this game and season so far. His play has been masterful and our backfield is so much better because of him.

If you think that when I say Alisa is playing better than Bronson Kaufusi is a slap to Kaufusi, than you are either picking a fight or easily offended. The comment was a compliment on Alisa, not a slap to kaufusi. Kaufusi is the better athlete and a much better pass rusher but Alisa is the more rounded linebacker right now. His pass coverage is better and he is playing just as good in the run defense as Kaufusi. Stop getting offended so easily.

I'm not offended at all. I just disagree with your opinion on PoVey (and now BK as well) ; but even more, I am calling out your obsession to excoriate PoVey on CC. And since you can't seem to find anyone who agrees with you, you keep beating that dead point trying to prove you are right.
