BYU QBs thru 17 Starts.jpgI did this last year as well. Here's how BYU QBs have fared through their first 17 starts. Brandon Doman fell off the list, making only 16 starts.

You'll see three colors Green are the two best in a given category, red are the two worst and the yellow is the guy in the middle. I think it'll be interesting to see how/if Hill continues to climb this chart. They are currently sorted by PER.

Very interesting. Still has a lot of time to rise up.

I know that this ranking is based on PER, but surely the rushing stats and TD's have to carry some weight. I have no doubt that a statistical genius like you Spiff could figure a variable to factor in the rushing stats and thus create a new rank order for this 17 game chart. It would be interesting to see your revised take on this.

Hill's passing is mediocre in this bunch but look at how far ahead of Young he is let alone the rest of them in running. I'd like to know how many QB s in the ncaa have run better at this stage in their career.

It is amazing how similar the numbers between Riley Nelson and Steve Young.



Both had a .647 completion percentage.

Both threw for 30 TDs

Both won 11 games

Both ran for 660+ yards

Every time I look at this chart I am amazed at just how strong of a schedule Beck went up against in his first starts. It's insane how many good teams he faced early on. I was probably too young to realize how good of a schedule Young faced as well.

It's nuts to look at this chart and see that McMahon had 1300+ more passing yards after 17 starts, compared to Hill. The 1980's BYU pass attack was just insane. And McMahon is a freak of nature.

Steve Young was quoted Saturday night as saying



If Taysom Hill continues to improve year over year, I see a "better me".



Hill has some year over year improving to do. But he is on a good path.

Keeping in mind that BYU played in the WAC in the Steve Young days, other than a game here or there Vs someone like UCLA, Baylor, or Georgia in the regular season - about 1.5 a year - Young did not face all that tough of a conference or non-conference schedule.



His Bowl games were in the Holiday Bowl Vs a very good Missouri team and the Citrus Bowl Vs a very good Ohio State team, but other than Air Force in the WAC, mostly easy rolling.

But the numbers say Young played against the 2nd best win/loss% of the group.



In the early 80s, the WAC was a great league. If BYU doesn't beat AFA in 1985, the WAC may have had back to back National Champions.

The WAC was never a great league. It did often, have 2 very good teams at the top. Always top heavy. Young did lose badly to a very good Ohio State team in the 1982 Bowl Game as I indicated -

I named the wrong Bowl but the right team. Young played Ohio State in the 1982 Holiday Bowl. IIRC, OSU started out 0-3 that year with injured star RB, got him back and then won 9 straight. They killed BYU.



Win loss % of opponents can be skewed by who those opponents play. All of the early great QBs played in the WAC. None played particularly tough schedules before Detmer. He did.
