Kurtz

When does NK come back? We need a legit WR option outside of Leslie and Matthews because neither one is fast enough against very good defenses. MM was shut down last night. I worry about our offense in the UCF game. Any chance Nick is back for that one?

Blackmon is fast enough but didn't see any playing time

I recall hearing 4-6 weeks back when it happened.



But, do not worry. We may not get behind their DBs, but their DBs will have to defend it to keep that from happening, and that will open things up underneath.



I was also under the impression Blackmon was faster than Kurtz? ???

I think route running > fast. Kurtz I understand has both down better than anyone even--Leslie. But who knows? Blackmon is not a starter according to depth charts. IIRC Kurtz was.

He should be close to being ready to go.

I wasn't all that impressed w Kurtz in spring game. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe he was too new. But seemed like he was too skinny to get much separation. If a DB presses, it will slow him down. I wouldn't count on him being a big game changer. But maybe i will be surprised.

That's what I read too about the spring game, but apparently he stepped it up in fall camp and was becoming the top WR.

I hope so. All 3 of those guys were touted.

He did.

On Leslie's 35 yard circus catch, he had gotten behind the defense and it would have been a touchdown if Hill had not been hit as he threw the ball. Leslie has plenty of speed. Texas also had tons of speed in the defensive backfield, speed we will not see again for the rest of the year. Maybe against CAL.

That Leslie catch was a very important play. Kept a drive alive and led to the score that sealed the game for all intents and purposes.

Getting separation has little to do with size, everything yo do with speed. Agreed that he could have more difficulty breaking free of bump and run coverage, but a lot of that has to do with speed and shiftiness as well as size and strength. The cover guy has to be careful in bump coverage against a speedy receiver, because if the receiver is able to make one move and get a step on him, the DB will already be off balance and out of position. Becomes difficult for defender to catch up. If it were all to the Defense's advantage then all defenses would employ bump coverage all the time, but there is a lot of risk for the defense, that's why only the teams with pretty good DBs do it regularly

When oh when does Kurtz get back out there? Nobody got open tonight. And then when they did Hill didn't trust his arm or was late. I can't believe how bad the passing game was in the 2nd half. We need some talent out there who can make a play. I didn't see any playmakers on the field except for Taysom and Jamaal.

#11 was wide open twice and Taysom did not look that way. Might be locking in on 9 and 10.

Especially in the second half, Taysom didn't have time to lock on to anyone. It was one read, then run for your life. You could have Kurtz, Jerry Rice, Megatron, and Godzilla with a giant catcher's mitt all in your formation, and it wouldn't matter - none of them are getting open against bump and run coverage in 1 second. Well, except Godzilla, who would get open, but would definitely be flagged for a personal foul.



I guarantee if Hill had the kind of time to throw that he had against UConn, he would have had similar results. Houston got torched for 400 passing yards last year, and at halftime clearly made a decision to take away the pass and make us beat them on the ground. Thankfully, we did. I like that this team can win in two ways, even if some of us think one of those ways is ugly. It makes us that much harder to beat.

So, as with most QBs, they do not play as well Vs a good defense. Also, I have noticed that when Koroma is out due to snapping over Hill's head Vs Texas or ejected in the Friday scrimmage and the Houston game, this OL drops off noticeably. He is the only true center BYU has had fir a long time.
