Here's hoping Jay Drew gets Crohn's disease

I Try to the Avoid, The "Jay Drew's Bias" Stuff, But Really....



This from the first several lines of his latest: "short-handed Texas," BYU offense "sputtering mightily" in the first half, and my favorite:

"It would be fun to do that every week," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said, sort of acknowledging that the Cougars’ schedule is so void of big-name programs that the Cougars might not get another chance to prove it can play with the big boys the rest of the way.



Is that what Mendenhall "sort of" acknowledged or intimated? Or did he mean that not many programs walk into places like Austin and shut up a packed house, week in, week out? Nothing Jay said is particularly egregious or necessarily false, but it collectively constitutes a nice job of passively letting the air out of the balloon of a historic and dominant BYU win. Of course, readers of the rag that employs Jay would expect as much.



I like to think I can tolerate criticism or lack of enthusiasm for stuff I like, and this coupled with low expectations from the Tribune has made Drew readable. A predictable wet blanket in good times and a smug critic in the bad? Sure. Revealing of a personal slant? Absolutely. But readable, and not outlandishly outside the boundaries of decent journalism.



But he's a bit too much of a panderer to the Trib's most loyal readers. Makes sense for him, but I think I've finally arrived at a point where it makes less sense for guys like me to click on his by-line.

Classic Jay Drew. He knows exactly how to put just a teensy bit of back-handed compliments in a piece that those who realize what they're seeing know it for what it is, but those who are just a little more literal end up defending him.

Oh and the same goes to you Herbstreit!
