The Game #3 curse

Under Bronco's tenure BYU is 1-8 in Game #3. Whether it's the teams we played, something about that point in the season, or both, here's hoping we don't fall victim to that again. The last thing I want to see is a repeat of Florida State 2009!

2005 - Lost to TCU 50-51 (OT)

2006 - Lost @ Boston College 23-30

2007 - Lost @ Tulsa 47-55

2008 - Beat Wyoming 44-0

2009 - Lost to Florida State 28-54

2010 - Lost @ Florida State 10-34

2011 - Lost to Utah 10-54

2012 - Lost @ Utah 21-24

2013 - Lost to Utah 13-20

Fortunately, we are not playing Florida State, Utah, or TCU. Those teams have given us problems no matter which week we play them. And we are at home. That seems to have helped.

I think this team + This opponent should be enough to at least break the curse for this season. If we were playing Utah I would be really worried.

Only thing that has me worried about this game is that it's a short week. Great that it is at home, but the team only gets 3 days of prep.

Houston has 3 days to prepare for BYU plus they have to travel. Houston really had a bad game in week one against UTSA. They did trounce Grambling yesterday.

I'm really looking forward to this game Thursday given how close last year's game was.

Lets think in terms of this year not 08 or 09. This year I think we would beat TCU since Andy Dalton is safely in the NFL. Florida state being the number 1 team in the nation, It wouldn't matter what week we played them we would lose. utah on the other hand has our number and the fact that we have been playing them during week 3 has made things worse. Plus I get more depressed from a utah loss than either of those other 2.

BYU has been favored in five of its last six game threes. They have covered the spread only once.

2012: BYU -3.5, road, lost 21-24, didn't cover vs Utah

2011: BYU -6, home, lost 10-54, didn't cover vs Utah

2010: BYU, +9.5, road, lost 10-34, didn't cover vs Florida St

2009: BYU, -7, home, lost 28-54, didn't cover vs Florida St

2008: BYU, -8.5, home, won 59-0, covered vs UCLA



The early line has BYU -14 at home vs Houston. It is BYU's largest spread in a game three. Will they cover?

You started on the right path, but missed the point. Week 3 has absolutely nothing to do with it. And do not be too quick to discount TCU if it is at their place. Week 3 is a coincidence. If we scheduled Weber State in week 3, we would be 9-0.

I feel the same way about this game that I did of the UT game. We got abused in the secondary by both teams last year but now we have the talent to stop that. And UofH doesn't even try to run so we'll shut them down too. They'll score a few times because I don't believe our secondary is great, but we'll pound them into submission by the 3rd quarter.

what if you were playing Utah or Houston in week 5? Or Utah in week 6 and Houston in week 3? The week has nothing to do with it.



BTW, I would be more worried about playing Utah, TCU or Florida State than playing Houston any week this season. Rank of my worrying - Florida State who would whip us, then Utah and TCU where I would put BYU 52% odds to win.

I think if BYU had played utah during week 5 or 6 last year we would have beaten them soundly. BYU improved a bunch during the 5 game winning streak last year. Facing them during week 3 last year before BYU had defined themselves offensively was a huge reason why we lost.

Just win, baby!

This is the game where the coaches earn their paycheck getting the players focused and ready to go.

And no undefeated talk either...that sets everyone up for disappointment. BYU will play a couple of crappy games this year (like all teams do) and not look so hot. If they stay focused, especially on the road, then things will take care of themselves.
