Is Anae The Guy?

As we begin the 2nd year of gfgh, and Anae 2.0, he still has one huge detractor on CC and possibly others. He has some supporters.

In Anae 1.0, BYU had some star players and ranked teams and a string of double digit win seasons. BYU was in the national discussion.

He had success at AZ. Now, BYU is 2 and 0. Has a QB in the Heisman didcussion, killed Texas for 2nd year in a row, averaging just under 40 points.

Time to ask the question and hear from the silent majority.

Robert Anae was a good Ocoordinator the 1st time he was here and now he is a good Ocoordinator again. This team is averaging 38pts per game over 2 games. Last year he averaged 30pts per game with the worst offensive line we have ever had. Unfortunately Ocoordinator is a thankless job at BYU because no matter what you do, there are fans who think they could do it better.

Oh and 1 more thing. BYU just put up 41 pts on a team that only allowed 94 total yards last week to a team that pummeled SMU this week. Texas' defense is really good and BYU just shredded it.

But when he calls a run up the middle 3 downs in a row, averaging 2 yc and then punt, over and over again calling runs up the middle that don't go anywhere (it became a standing joke at our gathering), surely he should learn, but he doesn't. Poor called game.

41 pts is not a poorly called game. Texas held North texas to 94 total yards last week. North Texas pummelled SMU this week. Not ever play called is going to work. Anae just put up 41 pts against Texas in Texas, his play calling was just fine.

Anae is fixated with the run up the middle. It's so predictable.

I haven't seen anything yet that tells me he is a better play caller. Yes, we won today. Anae also won some games with Hall, Collie, Unga and Pitts. He also lost some games with those guys that we all blamed on him.

He still calls an insane amount of run plays up the middle. He still calls pass plays that take too long to develop. Good news, he seemed to have come out of half time and adjusted things. That was nice to see.

In my eyes, he isn't better. The players are.

I have the same question that I have when people want Bronco gone.Who is going to replace him? Anae seems to be getting the job done and yes he has fantastic players right now that cover some of his weaknesses .I don't mind Anae. For now I am just going to Enjoy the win.

Some of those "runs up the middle" are sacrifice plays that set up the defense for plays that work.

Take what the defense gives you, and don't turn away from what is working until they force you off of it. Then take what they are giving up.

The 3rd quarter of the Texas game was nearly perfect. The first and second were very, very far from perfect. Ask Bronco... his halftime interview was about "turning those field goals into touchdowns."

With that said, we won't always be playing teams that will end up .500 (Texas might win some games when Ash comes back, but they looked exrremely unprepared and overpowered).

It's easy to heap praises on Anae after the win. But we've seen him do this before only to lose other games with his play calling.

Those runs up the middleware off of read option. Are you going to blae TH forthem? The plan is to wear the D down. It worked in the 2nd half.

The runs up the middle aren't the problem, at least not for me.

I don't like the slow developing, play-action, (different than read option which is quick) receivers doing long routes down the field and double move garbage.

Quick slants were open all game, and I said as much all throughout quarters one and two. When we started hitting them in the 3rd quarter we started moving the ball and scoring.

When they are bringing heavy pressure and/or containing the best thing to do is hit quick slants over the middle, because all the WRs are in man coverage and the linebackers are all focused on the run game and keeping tabs on Hill.

Regardless of whether Anae is the Guy, I'm going to look forward to every post from Blue as long as he keeps that sig gif.

Ask this question again after a lose or a win were his play calling is less than impressive.

I say yes.

Play calling is the part we see, and the part we criticize. But the parts we don't see - the whats and how's and who's and why's behind the scenes of the offensive unit - have as much or more to do with the success of the team. And for now the chemistry seems good (to an admitted outsider) and I don't hear any talk of division among the ranks. That's a plus for me.

I love coming to this site because I love BYU football. Sadly, I don't have enough time to really get into the nuts and bolts of what is wrong or right with the team. That means that I base a whole lot of my opinions about the team on what you guys say. When Anae was hired the second time I read here that many of you were concerned with his previous unwillingness (or inability) to adjust at half time. I recall that many posters named that deficit as his single biggest weakness, and the probable cause of his demise the second time around.

Well, I have now witnessed several occasions - last year and this - where half-time adjustments were evident and were a direct reason for victory. So based on what you all taught me last year regarding Anae, that is another plus for me.

I think his years away from the program did him wonders.

Now some of you in this very thread are unhappy that it took him until half-time to recognize what you saw from your couch. Again, I am no expert in football. But like you, I do have considerable expertise I other areas, and some of that might apply here. For example, being up by 6 in the middle of the second quarter (while it admittedly could have been at least 14), sound thinking could very well dictate that waiting until half to make adjustments, when everyone can hear the same information and be on the same page, is prudent.

Funny how that works. You have better athletes, you play better. You play Vs weaker defenses, you play better. You pound the middle with runs, you set up the play action pass. You throw down field with long developing plays - thus spreading the field and the short passes open up. Hit a few of those and the run opens up. I am not saying Anae is perfect. I am not even saying he is better. He has always been good - and yes - better when he has the athletes to go with it.

Fans fried Anae for not turning Jake Heaps into a Heisman candidate in 2010. Heaps was and is overrated. And we did not have a good RB. And the OL was overrated.

That was his only bad year.

Vancougar, Scott, Ygrid4ever and Bib, you said what I want to say. It may take several plays, a quarter, a half and maybe more to set up the other team. If we'd have had players like we have now when he was here before I doubt there would have been anywhere near the complaints he got. In Crowton's 12 win 2 loss year Doman and Stayly (sp) made the coach look great. The next year he was a bad coach.

I don't know how good Anae is, we may loose a game or 2, but he has been very good thus far this year with the players we have. We are lucky that someone looked in on Pocatello Idaho for a rm quarterback that is becoming one of the nations best.

We played against a team with a coach who had never given up 80 yards rushing to an opposing QB, a team with superior athletes at every position on defense, a team that had this game circled since the loss the last year, and we ROLLED. We scored every time we were in the red zone, moved the ball at will, and made fantastic second-half adjustments. Anyone who's still trying to criticize Anae after this game either doesn't understand the game of football beyond the basic rudiments, or is delusional and blinded by hate or their own transparent need to try to save face and justify past statements. Also, is it possible that Anae is a good coach because he learns and grows? He has done things that don't work, has been not a great coordinator at times, and has adapted to become a better coach each day than the day before? Hopefully what he takes from this game is that we can't continually try to throw the long ball against teams with NFL-caliber secondary: too many sacks and tackles for loss.

We rolled after half time after Bronco said he implemented some changes. Notice he didn't say "We" or "Anae" implemented the changes. He said he did.

Anae has produced a Top 25 offense in the past. Until he produces a Top 10 offense I will not claim he has improved.

Blue is right. More quick slants and outs are needed.

Let's see, first half: 97 rushing yards, 11-16 passing, 2 redzone opportunities with 2 redzone scores, and if not for a phantom holding call, a very long Taysom TD run. Only two drives ended in punts, one on downs because of a bad snap and one on a bad ball thrown by Taysom. I'd call that a success.

Some of them went for touchdowns (Hine's runs).
