Do we actually know how good our DB's are?

I have seen some highlights of JJ from 2012 and he made some nice plays, but is he really a shutdown corner? And then there's TT, Davis, Preator, and Daniel. Do we have any idea how good these guys really are?



It sounded like there were quite a few picks in camp, but do we really have "the best DB's in the history of BYU?" Or is this hype talk? I'll concede we're already better since Povey isn't starting...

Are they better than 96? I doubt it. Are they the best in close to a generation? Likely.



They don't have to be spectacular, just better to allow varied coverages and blitz packages.

We do not know how good other than knowing that they will be improved Vs 2013.



I am excited to see just how good they are.

This alone makes me unspeakably happy. No offense agin Skye, I'm sure he could take me in an arm-wrestling match, but the poor dude got abused over and over. It seemed like half or more of the deep catches by opponents was on PoVey's watch.

No; I don't think we know how good our DBs are. But they seem to be adequate. They don't need to be world beaters; they just need to be able to do their job. That job wasn't getting done too often the last few years (ND, UW, Texas (I have no idea why their OC didn't throw the deep ball more; it was open all night long!!), OSU)

I think the psychological pounding delivered by #3 and BYU defense had something to do the no long throws against UT.

If they can line up two yards closer to the line of scrimmage, that's a huge improvement in my book.

I was asking myself the same question about JJ. Remember how badly we were abused by Oregon St. During the "black out" game by backup Cody Vaz? It feels like there is always one game where they get completely lit up.



However I'm convinced there is more size, athleticism, and depth at this position than we've seen in a long time. I'm confused about why Harvey Jackson isn't on the 2-deep as well as TT. Those guys seem like they would have started easily not too long ago.

All things considered, I'm optimistic our defensive backs will shut down the pass. We've got some quality playmakers there. I think we'll see more interceptions this year. I'm just kind of waiting for Craig Bills or Jordan Johnson to completely light somebody up. Those two seem especially insane. And then when you add RDan and Trent Trammell, I think we've got that part of the D covered. Have to say, RDan has stepped up pretty freakin well when he was called on. And, Trent Trammell I'm sure is simply bloodthirsty after sitting out and rehabbing. Harvey Jackson and Kai Nacua are legit too. We've got some depth here, woot! woot! I think we definitely have an upgrade that allows for better one-on-one coverage and allow some crazy blitzes. I can't wait to see some defensive plays where Bronson and Fua are set loose and our D-Backs maintain the shutdown coverage, no prob.



It's game week baby! Shut em down, D-backs! I'm getting pumped to watch that defense hold and for TFLs and INTs against UConn. Look out, Huskieeeeees!!!! These guys have that quick shiftiness that I lost somewhere in my 20's, or let's just face it, never had.



My biggest question is how Dallin Leavitt starting at Kat Safety will do. I hope he has that Daniel Sorensen brand of "crazy athletic freak" to accompany Craig Bills at the other safety slot.

Nope.



They might be the reason that the defense doesn't take a step back this year. They also might be bad. We have a bunch of unproven kids at the D1 level and it will be interesting to see how they respond

Coaches indicated that Harvey was out of shape, getting winded, not used to working this hard - started picking up his game the last few days of camp.

Whoa, love the enthusiasm. Im stoked as well. But, dude, you need detox. One would think frm reading your post that this D backfield is the Seattle Seahawks of college football. But hey, why not--ITS GAME WEEK.



But to Gunks point--which i think is right on, If DBs can just play closer and/or legitimately play bump coverage, that is a huge improvement over last year. Huge.



OVerall, OP is right on task. Its Go time and there is a risk that the backfield has been over-hyped.



But if not, and these DBs are legit, and IF the middle of our Dline and MLBs hold ground, watch for this D, with its Twin Towers to do a lot of special things. And if safeties can roam and romp, you bet Bills will light up some folks and Leavitt will also show his metal. hes smaller than his dad, Jared (was a monster at LB in the 80s) but hes got all the fight he needs to be one more in a line os safeties that include Sorenson, RIch, et. al.

Could be GREAT! Go Cougs.

It is hard to take a step back when almost every starter last year is back but most did not hold their starting slot. Replacing Daniel Sorensen will be the only challenge. The guys who would have been starters a year ago but we're injured will allow the shuffling of bodies to accomplish that.



There will not be a DB step back. They may or not improve, but no DB backsliding. I agree there is inexperience in the front 7 that could cause an overall step back that needs to be offset by DBs, offense, special teams, and SOS.

The thing I love about our secondary is their play in the run game. When they need to contain on a smoke screen or a sweep, they are much better than previous secondaries at taking on their blocks if they are blocked, and making the tackle if they have a chance. Gone are the days of a crippled Nate Soelberg diving harmlessly at a runner's legs. I've seen good containment and tackling from JJ and Daniel, and there's no question with Bills - the kid loves to hit. That kind of play turns 5-7 yard runs into 2-3 yard runs, and that in turn makes passing downs more obvious and the coverage easier.

Well, I look at it this way. We really don't know for sure how good our secondary will be until we see them perform on the field but if you look back at 12 where JJ was pretty good and 13 where Rob Daniel was also pretty good, put them on the field together and we could see some really good corner play. Then if you look at the "talent" we have backing them up, it appears to be better than what we have seen as our starters in over the last 10 years or so and it kind of gives you an idea why Bronco is so high on his "talent" right now at that position. This defense has the potential to be very good if the corners start locking guys down, it will be fun to see how it all plays out.

vaz was throwing with pinpoint accuracy. that guy had a great game. I thought it was more him playing out of his mind than jj being bad.

Bills will be Bills but better. We will miss Sorenson a lot. Bills and Sorenson were a match made in heaven. Daniels got abused a lot last year in the passing game, as did PoVey. I have always thought of Daniels as more of a safety. He is a great tackler and blitzer, and his man coverage was just okay. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a lot of Nickel with him on the field with Bills and Leavitt.



I kind of alluded to it earlier, but we actually need them to be a strength, because the front 7 is pretty likely to take a step back withome a lot of new faces, and not much pressure last year outside of kaufusi, van noy, and Daniels from the corner.
