All, I figured I could use your input in this before I go emailing everyone. The following is an email (and hardcopy letter) I will send to Tostitos, with the idea that if you want something changed, go after the money. In case you're all curious, YES, I'm serious about my threats in the letter. I'd be honored if you'd do the same. And please feel free to use any or all of what I've written if you would also like to contact Tostitos. PLEASE DO! I will also send this email to the PR departments of PepsiCo, the Fiesta Bowl, and any ESPN/Media outlet for whom I can find an email address. I'd encourage you all to do the same. We CAN institute change. Before I send it off, however, I'd welcome any feedback or suggestions you have.

Attn Tostitos Public Relations:

To Whom it May Concern,

I have been a longtime customer of your products. I have always found them to be of the highest quality, and my family and I have enjoyed them very much. I've been a frequent purchaser not only of your brand's Corn Chips, but also Queso Dip and Salsas. Delicious.

I am writing to tell you that I WILL NEVER purchase another product from your company.

You're probably curious why, considering the praise I've just heaped upon you. Let me tell you.

You are the Title Sponsor for College Football's Bowl Championship Series Fiesta Bowl. The BCS is an organization that was created to horde and monopolize money and power for the established elite programs in Collegiate Athletics, and FROM all others. In the past, the Fiesta Bowl has been an honest event that has done many positive things for College Football and its community. Even when the BCS offered to make it part of their scheme, the Fiesta Bowl itself was acting in its own best interests, for which I couldn't blame them, as long as they did their part to accomplish goals that the Collegiate Bowl system has aspired to for a century, namely rewarding scholar-atheletes for superior play, and affecting their community positively. This year, all of that changed. With this year's INTENTIONAL manuevering to DENY two WORTHY yet non-"royal" teams from proving themselves AGAINST other top-NAME schools, the Fiesta Bowl has become a COMPLICIT Partner in the EXPLOITATION of unentitled Collegiate Sports Programs, even to its OWN FINANCIAL DETRIMENT. There is no way the Bowl will recieve the ratings it has enjoyed previously given two "small-time" schools and media-markets, yet the Fiesta Bowl towed the BCS company line and did it anyway. These two schools are being RELEGATED to a meaningless game with one another to absolve the "Royal" collegiate organizations the EMBARRASSMENT of more potential losses at the hands of these unentitled teams on the game's biggest stages, in order to perpetuate false public perception that teams from these conferences are not as good. It was an intentional and subversive tactic to maintain their kingdom, and the Fiesta Bowl, which proudly displays YOUR name, is the facilitator in this dubious dishonesty. It is disgusting. And it shouldn't be the kind of dishonest event with which you should want your name associated.

I have a son who is almost three now. It has come to the point that I CAN'T CONSCION instilling in him the love of sports and the desire to compete collegiately, when I can see that his talents would be abused and exploited for the avarice of a select few persons and organizations. For this reason, as a proponent of honor and fairplay, and a fan of College Football's true ideals of sportsmanship, I can not support an organization such as yourself, who financially supports the exploitation of the underprivileged for the unethical benefit of the few.

I will once again patronize your company and products when I see that you've made your continued support of the Fiesta Bowl contingent on their becoming a part of a Collegiate System that is FAIR and EQUITABLE to ALL College Football participants, namely incorporating the Fiesta Bowl into a TRUE playoff which includes ALL conference champions. Until that time, you'll not recieve PENNY ONE from me and my house. I'm done with you, with Frito-Lay, Gatorade, and Quaker Oats brands. I'm EVEN SWITCHING FROM PEPSI TO COKE. That is how serious I am about this. I will also encourage ALL of my friends, sports fans or not, to do the same. I'm SICK and TIRED of the lies, extortion and greed that has RUINED the Sport of College Football that I love, and YOU SHOULD BE TOO. When you're willing to stand with honesty and honor, please let me know, because I HAVE always enjoyed your products.

I look forward to hearing your prompt response.

Yours sincerely and extremely disappointed,

That oughta be the mantra for an entire website dedicated to the unfairness of this travesty of a football game.

Just tell me where to sign on, how much someone needs donated in $ to build the website, etc. I'm on board.

Give me a list of every Tostitos related brand and they're never again in my home. It's not like they make something I can't live without.

I wish there was more outrage.

This hole actually is pretty deep.

Tostitos is a Frito-Lay brand.

Frito-Lay is owned by Pepsi, which is headquartered in the Dallas area.

Pepsi is a Fortune 500 company.

So if you want to make some noise, you better bring it large, and attack the head of the monster. Pepsi is just one head. There are many others.

Thanks for havin' my back, Craig, and more importantly, College Sports' back as well!

Tostitos is one cog in the Pepsi Machine (Compliments of Wikipeidia-ing Pepsi), namely:

Pepsi

Mountain Dew (that one'll hurt, especially seeing as I'm the shift engineer on nights every other month)

7-up/Mug/Sierra Mist

Gatorade

Ben and Jerry's (sorry, ladies)

Aquafina

Tropicana/Dole juices

Frito-Lay/Doritos/Sun Chips/Rold Gold

Quaker Brand (from oats to granola bars)/Aunt Jemima/Cap'n Crunch

along with various and sundry small/foreign name products

Considerable list, but I'm willing to do without them (shoot, my waistline doesn't need most of 'em anyway)!

(You beat me too it, Lawboy, congrats).

If someone can do the legwork on:

The addresses in which to send these letters (I'll copy every company and sign this letter and send one)

Possibly any other sites that this information should be shared, including every other cougar fansite, and every site in the mwc, wac, etc. etc. etc.

what would it take to build a website in dedication to this idea of voting with our dollars against the corrupt BCS system and who has the ability (I know nothing about building websites etc.)?

this is a worthy cause and battle and I think possibly more worthy than our byu fandom; this is about the entire sport and the corruption within.

the haven't listened to reason, maybe they'll listen to losing $

I've already forwarded your letter to the local KC sports radio station; in the past they've always taken my calls and read my emails and letters; I assure you that this will get read. it's 810 whb and it's the biggest sports radio station in the country (largest signal, not sure about the most listeners) - they cover wichita, kansas city, topeka, oklahoma city, joplin, columbia, omaha etc.

let me know what else I can do

If we vote with our $ maybe they'll actually listen; if not, I'll just rid myself of a lot of junk food. either way, I'd rather just do more than complain and this seems like a viable option.

btw - the one thing I won't do is turn that game off. Aside from the Vegas Bowl, it's the only game I will watch this year. That is simply because while Tostitos (and it's parent companies), the BCS (and it's partners) will not get a cent from me, TCU deserves our support.

If you happen to know if there's any tire companies that support the bcs, let me know as I'm about to replace the tires on my wifes SUV this weekend (I'm guessing that'll be a $500+ purchase)

This movement really needs a website and some backing; do that and I think you'll find a landslide of support from everywhere

the fact that BYU fans would have started it would do nothing but bring us good will from college football fans alike; again let me know what I can do to make that happen. I wish I knew how to build a website, etc.

btw - Kitic and I are still planning to go up to the U in March and do the "what do you think of BYU video" so I'll be in Utah in March if people from this board want to get together for dinner, etc. Maybe we will have this movement going fullforce by then and we'll actually have something constructive to discuss in person.

My best friend and I discussed building a website (10 years ago) while we were in med school called the CSFA (concerned sports fans of america) and I really really regret that we did nothing more than talk about it. I really think that 10 years later that nothing would have been more appropriate than if that site had been created in the beginning of the dotcom boom. I'm all about helping with this cause now.

Craig, you rock!

If that does get read on the air, I hope you included my real name. Not to be the materialist bastard, but I wouldn't turn down my 2 minutes of fame if I had them...

 ;)

I'm working on emails. Off the top, it's pretty easy to start up a blog using blogspot

As long as we're on the attack, I guess we should go after the Sugar and Orange Bowl sponsors.

(humorously, I'm actually feeling a little bit of solidarity towards the Rose Bowl here. Everybody pisses-and-moans about them gumming up the works, but THEY'RE the ones who are saying screw the money, we'll take the tradition, no matter how exclusionary that tradition may be. If I were to choose the lesser of the two evils...)

And maybe as the public, offer suggestions to the mid-tier bowls to make a powerplay. I know it'd never go off exactly like this, but if the BCS bowls saw that THOUSANDS of letters were filling the mailboxes of, say, the Cotton Bowl and its Title Sponsor telling them that we, the American Public, want THEM to be the Final Game of the NCAA Football National Championship Tournament, and SCREW the other five Bowls, SOMEBODY would start to get worried, and hopefully start making concessions.

And yes, agreed. We SHOW SOLIDARITY to the MWC and WAC by supporting the Champions in their bowl game. I've already decided I'm not watching one second of the rest of the games.

But please, everyone, even if you're not gonna be home that night, TURN ON YOUR TV's and leave the channel on the Fiesta Bowl. ALL THE RATINGS THEY CAN GET!!! And anyway, all politicking aside, I actually think the Fiesta WILL be the most entertaining of the B(c)S games this year anyway!!!

I'm unfortunately too busy right now to offer my services creating the website, though maybe over the summer I could. In the mean time, we could make a sticky thread, or I could open up a whole category/forum like BYU Football, or Pro Sports, we'd have one for this cause.

Boy, sky's the limit with the other two sponsors, regarding durogatory taglines: Allstate and FexEx.

"If you're a TRUE College Football Fan, you're in BETTER hands WITHOUT Allstate!"

"A playoff. That's NOT Allstate's stand!"

"What Brown can do for you that FedEx won't... DELIVER a TRUE College Playoff"

"I'll take Brown, the color of a College Football, than green, the color FedEx is taking FROM it!"

This could be FUN!!!

FWIW, I went ahead and reserved the domain name "thebcsboycott.com"

I would have preferred just "bcsboycott.com," but someone already has that one and isn't doing anything productive with it.

So, if anyone decides to take the next step with this and actually design/host a site, let me know and I'll gladly give you the domain as my small contribution. I just figured someone had to do something to make sure this was even viable out of the gates.d

Wouldn't you know it, but a "system error" caused that my email to Frito-Lay wasn't delivered, and the website asked me kindly to try again later.

The Pepsi Feedback site worked, however. Ball is rolling.

Sno, thanks for supplying the domain. Simple, elegant (and you're right, bcsboycott DOES suck). Unfortunately, I don't know the first thing about coding up a site. If nobody else is willing, however, I'm sure there are a few good online tutorials, and I'd be willing to give it a shot.

I like this. It feels better than just complaining!

What exactly did you want the Fiesta Bowl to do? To me they did the best job of trying to get a great game while managing attendance and television expectations.

They made TCU their first pick. HOW DARE THEY!?!?! There was only 1 team available that was as worthy to play in that game than TCU and that was Cincinnati. However, the reasons NOT to pick Cinci are pretty obvious (explained below).

Then they could choose between #3 Cinci, #11 Va Tech, #14 BYU and #6 BSU for their 2nd pick.

If you care about ratings and attendance Cinci would be the WORST pick. They struggled to sell out their ticket allotment for their FIRST BCS BOWL last year and the Orange Bowl generated a 5.4 Nielsen rating which was the worst rating in the history of the BCS. It's no wonder that they were the last team selected for the BCS this year.

Then the choice was #11 Virginia Tech, #14 BYU or #6 BSU. I know, you're mad they didn't choose the Cougars. Wait a minute, BYU-TCU would be a rematch. So BYU's out.

Virginia Tech is 9-3 and played a really tough schedule. Are you suggesting they should be rewarded more than BSU? I don't think so either.

I would agree with you here for the most part except for the part of passing on Cinci based off bad numbers. The Ponsettia bowl if I remember correctly had pretty bad ratings last year as well, so why would they want to show case that bowl again this year? I would think the bigger draw would be TCU-Cinci since there was the intrigue the last part of the season on whether Cinci would jump TCU in the rankings and more importantly if they were worthy of jumping TCU. This match up would hold more interest and a better ranking match up than BSU-TCU.

Take a 3 loss Va Tech over an undefeated BSU....? You act as if the Fiesta Bowl had a choice there. That would have been a public relations nightmare.(no one wants to see Va Tech anyhow, which is why they ended up in the Chick Fila vs Tennessee - no one cares about these teams west of the Mississippi)

(Idaho would have sent their national guard to destroy the bowl officials in that case)

We get it, the Fiesta had no choice but to take BSU... (if in fact you believe that these bowls can't negotiate for teams and that's it's as simple as a neighborhood, "pick your team" and someone will get stuck with BSU; I don't buy it)

I'm not sure you quite see the other angle Rasta. These bowls aren't 100% independent of each other. To think so is very naive... look no further than Kansas getting a bid 3 years ago over a much more deserving Missouri. Why? Because Lou Perkins of Kansas (the AD) had connections with the Sugar bowl... and through that arranged his Orange Bowl matchup. It was well documented in the Kansas City star. He used his political influence through the sugar bowl connections to influence the choice of Kansas over Missouri; even though Missouri had beaten KU and their only losses that year came at the hands of Oklahoma.

Is TCU/BSU a bad bowl game? Hell no, which is why we'll all watch it.

The issue is that these bowls function as a team to perpetuate the BCS agenda. (They hired Ari Fliescher for a reason)

Did the Fiesta bowl screw up by taking TCU then BSU? no

Does that make it right? no

If the title sponsors of these bowls put their foot down collectively, I assure you that they could have made TCU - Florida happen in the Fiesta bowl and BSU - Cincy happen in the other.

You seem to make the argument that TCU - BSU is in the best interest of TCU and BSU.....BUT if that were the case, then why are teams, coaches (including Bronco) and administrators calling foul here? Because they'd rather measure themselves against the AQ schools. If they can't play for the national championship, then the next step is showing that they belong. Please let's not be so smug as to say that we know what's best for TCU, BSU and other nonAQ schools like Utah and BYU when their administrators and coaches all wanted to test themselves against the Floridas of the world.

If the other argument is money and viewership; you're also wrong. Not in the history of the BCS has a nonAQ school generated top viewership (and now we have a rematch of the Poinsettia bowl) . Ticket sales are nice, but TV is where Tostitos gets their money's worth (count how many commercials during the bowl game plugs a product linked to their company and how many more times you see their logo). This is where the title sponsor makes their hay. Ultimately most BCS bowls sell out, but even if they didn't they'd take a million extra viewers over selling 5,000 seats (though the local economy prefers the sellout); they don't all hit home runs with TV ratings.

Again if the only reason behind the madness is money, then a plan to withhold money from a title sponsor would be a very viable way to send a message.

Going back to the best interest of TCU/BSU. How does this game help the winner as far as the future? If TCU beats Florida, they set themselves up with a top 5-6 spot to start next season in the rankings and a serious chance for a bid at a national championship. If they beat BSU, it's ho hum... same deal for BSU. They're still considered paper champs and pretenders by the voters...

But here's the real issue.

Will the bowl system go away in the event of a playoff? no

Do the bowls (and their title sponsors) worry about losing control of the matchups if the BCS isn't running the ship? yes

At what level of resistance are the bowls as far as a playoff? I don't know; though I know resistance exists

Would that resistance be less by the bowls and would the bowls be in more favor of a playoff if their title sponsors bottom line took a hit as far as public perception and spending goes? absolutely

This isn't just about the Fiesta, it's about the bowl system in general. Every year there's a travesty, not just this year. Did Utah deserve a shot at Florida last year? yes

Would TCU deserve a shot at Bama/UT? yes yes yes

Can a group of people create such an outcry that a major companies bottom line takes a hit? yes

Will that company then adapt to please those consumers? history says yes - Walmart has bent over backwards to avoid their PR nightmare.

Monsanto spent 200 million dollars to correct their image from the FOOD INC. fiasco. (watch tv for an hour and you'll see a commercial about how much Monsanto loves farmers now)

So the onus is now on us. We've spoken up, we've complained for years about the BCS, however most of us have done very little to actually enact change. There are millions of college football fans crying out for a playoff, yet like us they have all felt powerless to do a thing. What if millions of fans voted with their wallet?

The bottom line, is that if the billion dollar title sponsors felt the heat, they might do something about it. And what's our real investment here? A little time, some judicious spending in the future, and some energy to get the word out...

Hell, people have made more effort to push more ridiculous agendas... (PETA for example)

If we're all willing to commit to this, I don't see how any of us would regret it. If we do nothing, then we're no better than the others that call talk radio, bitch about the BCS and do nothing. I'm tired of doing nothing.

Is "Tostitos" the enemy here? not really but they're in bed with the enemy and if we put enough national pressure on companies like them, they might just stop putting out for the enemy. Good enough for me.

The Poinsettia Bowl was played on ESPN in late December while the Orange was played on Fox in early January. That's a big difference in terms of available viewers. More people watched the Poinsettia Bowl than the Hawaii Bowl that featured Notre Dame. If they were given a bigger platform they would have crushed the Orange Bowl in the ratings.

Actually you are so wrong about the idea that the BCS bowls work together. Pepsi doesn't sacrifice profits to help Coke. Ford doesn't sacrifice profits to help GM. The Fiesta Bowl doesn't care about about the Sugar, Rose, or Orange Bowl. They view each other as competitors. I haven't seen any evidence to the contrary. I would like to read what you are talking about regarding KU. Every article I've read on the Kansas situation is that Perkins was chewing the ears of all the BCS bowls not that the Sugar Bowl made any kind of deal.

I heard John Junker the CEO of the Fiesta Bowl speak on the bowl selection process. He basically said it is a 15 minute teleconference. The BCS director goes over the rules and who's eligible. Then they pick the teams in order. Then they're done. There is no wheeling and dealing of the Bowls.

Is TCU/BSU a bad bowl game? Hell no, which is why we'll all watch it.

Again, you don't understand the selection process and how undesirable Cincy is. Florida and TCU could have met in the Fiesta, but the Sugar Bowl had the first pick to replace the #1 BCS seed which was an SEC team. Not surprisingly, they chose the most attractive team out there. Florida.

You seem to make the argument that TCU - BSU is in the best interest of TCU and BSU.....BUT if that were the case, then why are teams, coaches (including Bronco) and administrators calling foul here? Which coaches and administrators are complaining? Link?

If the other argument is money and viewership; you're also wrong. Not in the history of the BCS has a nonAQ school generated top viewership (and now we have a rematch of the Poinsettia bowl) .

I didn't say they would have TOP viewership. I just said they would be competitive. The two LEAST VIEWED GAMES IN BCS HISTORY involved a matchup of 2 BCS teams.

Ticket sales are nice, but TV is where Tostitos gets their money's worth (count how many commercials during the bowl game plugs a product linked to their company and how many more times you see their logo). This is where the title sponsor makes their hay. Ultimately these BCS bowls all sell out; they don't all hit home runs with TV ratings.

Right, Junker said that he consults with Fox on potential matchups. That means the Fiesta matchup was ratified by Fox.

Going back to the best interest of TCU/BSU. How does this game help the winner as far as the future? Let's acknowledge one fundamental truth regarding this season. Cincy, TCU, and BSU are pretty much viewed as peers. Notice the comparisons throughout the season. People put Texas, Florida, and Alabama in one class of undefeated and Cincy, TCU, and BSU in another. This is despite the fact that Cincy is in a BCS conference.

With that in mind there is only one opponent that is a difference maker to the three unwashed teams in terms of advancing reputation. . Florida. Beating Georgia Tech or Iowa wouldn't do squat for any those three teams. It would be no different if they beat each other up. Guess what? Only 1 team can play Florida.

To suggest that TCU or BSU need to play Iowa or Georgia Tech to prove they belong is absurd. They have already proven they belong. That fight is over.

What "nonBCS" teams need to prove is if they can carry a major bowl game by themselves. That's the new challenge. All TCU and BSU need to do is sell out and not be the worst rated BCS bowl game. That will help advance the WAC and MWC far more than a win over Georgia Tech or Iowa.
M
Mars

Easy. The Fiesta Bowl SHOULD HAVE taken Cincy, because THEY KNEW either TCU or Boise State would be available later. And if they didn't take TCU, another BCS bowl WOULD HAVE TO. Simple.
S
stuckinbig10country
First off, the best bowl match-ups out of the teams in the BCS games, not factoring in #1 and #2, would have been:

Sugar- Florida vs. TCU-Florida would pack the place, its just as close (if not closer) for TCU. TCU doesn't have a big fan base because its a realitively small FBS school. This could have happened if the Sugar took Florida with their first pick, and the Fiesta took BSU with their first pick. That fits Rasta's logic of wanting to fill up the stadium, because Boise will take huge amounts of fans to this game. I would guarentee this would have been the highest rated bowl, outside the title game.

Fiesta-Boise St. vs. Cincinnati. I would almost put Iowa here instead of Cincinnati, but they would be gone with the Orange Bowl's first pick because they travel so well. Cincy isn't going to travel well, but BSU would fill up the stadium. This would be a game people would watch because its interesting, and its the night before the title game. Only game in primetime that evening. High scoring too, most likely.

Rose and Orange stay the same.

Really, if the Fiesta Bowl wanted higher ratings, this is the game they would have picked. I could see why they'd want BSU, because of the fans that would come.

Let's face it. They took one for the team. And Rasta, being the boards Pac 10/BCS apologist, we understand why you are trying to defend it. You're the only one who can get away with it here.
